1. I just had a 2 hour lesson with Jake on DB. I have a new band and a gig upcoming, never having gigged a DB (or in truth played it much in the past decade) and we concentrated on lh and rh technique, positioning and intonation (sliding to position etc). Fantastic clear instructions, reinforcement of messages so that I retained them, and a thoroughly nice guy to boot. Noone has ever played my Alembic Spoiler so well either! Highly recommended. Once I am the other side of my first gig, I will definitely book another lesson with Jake to work on those areas have been exposed in the band/live situation.
2.
Is this Carry On Basschat?
Big One's, Midgets? That Alex Claber has a filthy mind. One can only wonder about the Super Twelve ...
3. No idea, to be honest but it seems to be standard. Doesn't affect how the bass plays IMHO (maybe it would if you played up at the highest frets a lot but I never venture up to that dark, murky other world!)
4. Here's my bass. You can just about see the 'overhang' of the neck pocket on the lower side here
5. Thats standard - the non-aligned edge. My '72 Precision has that and is still the nicest bass I've ever played. Not an issue for me!
6. I've no idea whether right or wrong but I would say it sounds logical that greater headstock mass reduces dead spots. My logic is as follows: well known players like Leland Sklar (who knows a thing or two about bass) use the clamp thing on the headstock which adds mass and clearly believe in it, thus a headstock with more mass/weight will replicate this better than a downsized headstock, all else equal. Probably b*llocks but makes sense to me.
7. People routinely sell off parts basses via the components on this site as they can realize more cash. Some of the parts are clearly quite valuable, eg, Badass (have you seen how much they go for now?) plus a nice neck is usually in demand. if you can find the sources it may be worth doing a calculation of the break-up value as it may net you more. £1,000 is a lot to spend on a parts build so I assume everything is top quality. Just a thought and good luck with the sale.
8. On p43 the G string looks too far from the edge of the board so my vote is that the string wasn't sat on the saddle properly and that BGM supplied the photo, from the set it took with the review. Still think its over-priced compared with a good UK luthier build (eg, Shuker) - and when have you seen BGM say a bass is poor/disappointing/overpriced? Their reviews always gild the lily IMHO but we've been down that route before in other threads
9. Need the money so now on eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...em=130438727380 Happy to remove listing if a BC'er contacts me with the (lower BC) offer price
10. Sunday bump. Had various BCers PM me but not after trades, sorry. Going to have to try evilBay soon if no offer materialises from BC
11.
If there was a prize for the most amount of for sale threads that end up withdrawn! How deep are these just out of interest Clarky? They look massive on photos?
Er, thanks, I think It's 356mm x 356 mm at the front but is quite deep at 498mm. I assume there 's some tech-y explanation ( which I wouldn't understand) for it being that long.
12. Just bought a Markbass combo off Alan, our second trade. Combo was, as Alan said, in immaculate condition. As before, great transaction and I am very happy to recommend Alan to other BC'ers.
13. Actually, this might be useful to keep hold of. Hence withdrawn
14. Funnily enough I've just been sorting out my bridge. The action on mine was way too high so I took a knife and sandpaper to it and lowered the height and cut deeper notches - yep, you guessed it, I cut too far on the A string so that it clicked against the fingerboard and buzzed like hell. In this case either you can raise the bridge by shimming some hardboard under the player-side foot (should really be glued) or do as I do which is to get hold of an adjustable bridge with wheels on it so raise and lower it. Just fitted the latter and I think I've just about got it right. If its the fingerboard that s the problem unfortunately that needs professional straightening (re-shooting). Maybe you could do a bodge job for now and put something in the A notch to raise the string slightly?
15. Can I just add, I am not Boris
16. Sunny Saturday bump. Would include postage within UK for £1500 total - overseas posting needs to be added
17.
Andy Fairweather-Lowe? He's class, and very stylish.
Trawls memory banks - wasn't he the guy that did Wide eyed and legless around 1979? Looked a bit different then, but didn't we all!
18.
Stylish! Wearing that tie?
You can't see his dayglo orange Bermuda shoots and electric blue winkle-pickers from this photo, Marvin
19.
Would it have killed them to put black tuners on it? The black-on-black-on-black of the body makes the headstock look completely washed out.
Did a quick google - his most recent bass ( he seems to have had a number of black Ps including one with cream Dimarzios) has black body hardware but chrome tuners. So I guess they are trying to be faithful to the real McCoy. I won't be buying one mind.
20. Based on pricing I assume it's made in Japan or Mexico ( if that matters)
21. Here's the spec page http://www.tcelectronic.com/RS112.asp
22.
I use one of these for rehearsals and underneath an RS210 for gigs. It's a fantastic cab.
Want another?
23. Hi all, I bought this to be my transportable cab for practices, small gigs etc. Paid £329 from BassDirect a few weeks ago http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_sp...el_112_cab.html Its as-new, never left house (as drummer quit the punk band and rehearsals put 'on hold'!) £275 sound fair? PS, selling as have incoming small combo
24.
Most originals bands give up before they get the opportunity to experience this - I'd agree. .....but what if they hadn't given up?
We've been going for two years but we're a minority interest (originals punk) and we've never had a crowd bigger than 100 (of which perhaps 30-40 to see us, the remainder the other bands). Last year has been a disaster with crowd sizes falling sharply (recession, I'm sure, especially on weekday nights) and its been tough to get any joy out of it. We played a gig a few months back where we ended up as the entire crowd (the three of us and Mrs Clarky) for the headlining band, a reasonably well known punk act from the '70s. If you play to 1,000 diehard fans you are a lucky sod. Like WoT says, you are DEFINITELY in the minority
