1. Get regular gigs for both bands. Build a BFM Tuba 24. Buy a compressor. G
2. Have a guid new year all. Up here it's homecoming year (sounds like it could be a big bass bash)! G
3. Cheers Ben, My concern I think is if putting the two mono jacks into the MuRF will cause a short in it as the stereo jack has the two shield (Negative feeds) linked. If the MuRF's outs are wired inside on the sockets as to be left jack = Positive tip & right jack = Negative tip, then that is what could cause damage. It's probably unlikely to be this, but if it was only to run separate mono leads for both left & right, then it would make no difference. G
4. He is a brilliant bassist & as far as bass playing goes is one of my idols. But that unfortunately is where it ends.
Really don't know much about his spirituality, at the worst it means he's a "christian".
Sorry buddy, a Christian believes in God & Jesus etc, a scientologist believes in Zorg (or something like that), alien spirits & was made up by a science fiction author (L. Ron Hubbard).
5. Many moons ago I put 2 mono channels onto a stereo jack & because it was 2 separate lines, it caused a short & burnt out the amp. I don't want a similar thing happening to the mac or the murf & I'm probably being over cautious. I'm using either Garageband or Audacity to record. G
6. Does anyone know if it is safe to take a lead with two mono 1/4 jacks on one end to a stereo 2.4mm jack from the MuRF into my mac to get a stereo recording? I know with some devices this can do damage to one or both (made this mistake in the past). G
7. I enjoy a bit of solo bass but don't do it enough. One of the first solo pieces I did was my own transcription of Fur Elise after having learned it on piano. I need to dig that out again. I tried learning NV43345 & 3A17 7718 by Billy Sheehan (both from the Talas Years album), but I never managed to play either of them the full way thru. Did learn ShyBoy tho. However, attempting these did learn me how to hold chords & tap, play harmonic scales & a few other techniques. I'd love to learn some more solo bass stuff as what I have just now is very little & I haven't gotten around to looking for any transcriptions (too busy on here you see! ).
8. I've heard a lot of better/worse players than me but the important thing is that I'm competent at playing & confident in my band. Yes the drummer gets the wrong tempo now & again and the guitarist never plays the same thing twice (EVER). But they both sound good & no one knows if it's meant to go like that or not as it is original material. My singer is pretty much pitch perfect & quite often he sings parts of songs different from a previous version. I think I'm the only one who plays the same thing twice but I wouldn't swap my band members for anyone else 'cause what they play is what I like & fits in perfectly. Now that I've got myself a MuRF the drummer's gonna have to try & keep timing with me (I might need a tap tempo switch for this one!), but if he doesn't, I can make use of it's animator in my other band that has no drummer (it's acoustic folk country blues jazz type stuff). But overall, I'm a very good bassist. I can play what I need with fingers or pick, I can tap, but not as good as Mr Sheehan (his Talas years learned me a lot), I can slap, but not as good as Flea or Mr Wooten and I can play fast fills, scales etc. Most importantly, I can play what's needed to make a song sound good & keep time with the band. G
9. I started my musical life off on keys when my parents got me an organ for my 5th Christmas. Then when I was 12 my dad took me to get another mono synth (Jem SX1000) & my wee bro got an acoustic guitar, needless to say he never played it so I decided to learn it & then decided I wanted to play bass when I was 14 as I kept coming up with basslines on the synths & the guitar. I still have a semi acoustic & play regularly & considering getting a decent keyboard in the near future (something I can use in the band to play basslines on!). G
10. The Chain was the first song I learned on bass, closely followed by loads of U2, The Cult, The Cure, Talking Heads, etc. You'll find hundreds of songs that are easy to play. I suggest starting with something like "With or without you" by U2 as it has a very easy bassline but will help you to keep time as it's just constant 8th notes (there's bound to be tonnes of songs that could fit that bill that you already know tho). Anyway, best of luck on learning bass. It's fairly easy to get the basics of. G
11.
Treasure that, they are rare I believe...
They are indeed. Bass murf's are easier to get tho :brow:
12. My girlfriend got me a moogerfooger bass murf. Looking forward to getting home to try it out!
13. now I have an excuse to get a 5 string! Cheers
14.
Blimey, how does that work??? Matt
From what I can hear, it doesn't Saying that tho, the guitarist should maybe try playing that way too On a serious side tho, AM. Playing left handed may work well for you & I hope it does, but it doesn't get rid of the problem which may still be a pain playing lefty. I'd try restringing your bass to left & see how you get on with it but I would get someone private (physio, etc) to have a look at your lump for your long term benefit. I get a pain in my wrist also, but only when I'm holding octaved notes & I'm fine if I'm holding a chord as long as it's not for too long (I blame old age for this!). Anyway, welcome to the world of bass & hope you get sorted by which ever method & enjoy it. G
15. I have a lead that I take straight from my bass straight into the back of the mac. You can hear how it sounds here: www.myspace.com/frigorific & listen to "R we having fun" and "Criminal". I re recorded the bass in GB. I done most of the mixing of all four of the songs in garageband & then put the individual tracks into Audacity (also free) and finished them there. Garageband seemed to lose top end & volume for some strange reason when I exported the finished jobbies.
16.
--------5-----------------16-------------------- -------------17--5--X--------------------------- -7--------4-------------5-----14---------------- ---5-3--------------------15-------X------5--3- -----------------------------------------3------- I won't be able to play this, as I've only got 4 strings I could always drop D, I suppose.
Other option is this: --------5-----------------16----------------------4- -------------17--5--X----------------------------5- -7--------4-------------5-----14-------5----------- ---5-3--------------------15-------X------5--3---- ----------------------------------------(3)----------
17. Could make it a big long slide from the C# to the G
18. I know Should be fun trying to play this one!
19. -------5-- ---------17 -7------4- ---5-3---- Need to get rid of some dust!
20. I work for an insurance company & thought I'd share a little knowledge (tho you may already know it). If your home insurance has Personal Possessions cover, then it may well cover your gear & quite often this is a worldwide cover. However, if you are using your gear for business use (gigging for money) then it might not cover it but you may be able to add that option, depending on who you are with. Problem is tho, if you do have to claim, it's gonna put your house insurance up, not just your gear insurance. Hope this is of some use.
21. That was Excellent! Have a great Christmas.
22. I've got an idea, don't know if it would work tho. What about putting one of the aggi cabs the other side of the room\stage facing you? Either that or tell the drummer to stop smashing the crash & open hats constantly & get control of the guitarists volume pedal (something my band considers regularly).
23. As you can see, you'll get countless responses for mac & pc and what's the best operating system to use (osX, Windows whatever or Linux). Once you've made up your mind (which will probably change a few months after you've got your desired machine), you need to make sure it has decent specs: What you should be looking for is a decent sized processor, if it's a laptop you should look for at least a 1.4g but the more the merrier, if it's a pc or mac you want to be looking at 2g+. Try for at least 1 gb of ram, a decent graphics card (256 or above is good) and make sure there's a nice big hard drive in it. Hard drive is not the main concern tho, as you can easily add an external drive on & nowadays you can get a terrabyte drive for less than £100! Make sure there's plenty of USB ports (4 or 5 is good) as you always find things to plug in, but again if you run out, you can plug in a USB hub that will turn 1 into 4. You may want either a decent soundcard or audio interface. I find the soundcard in my iMac good enough for what I do but my singer has an audio interface for his macbook as he uses it in live situations. A decent lcd monitor should be on your list (maybe not if you go down the laptop/imac route) and a good set of nearfield monitors (the speaker type) for listening to your music on. Then get your desired software (there's countless options) & that's you ready. G
24. I have a pc laptop & an iMac. I haven't used the laptop for music (or anything else) since getting the mac other than to take files off it. The rest of my band either have or are getting macs. My other half is an IT consultant & says she prefers windows but is always fighting with me to get on the mac. I think it could be something to do with it being a lot more stable. There isn't a huge amount of software for osX, but what there is does what you need it to as opposed to having 20 bits of sh*tty pc progs running to try & get the job done only for it to slow right down then crash (been there many times & broke pc's for this). If you want a pc that's going to compare with a mac you may find yourself spending more than a decent mac with logic. Now go & buy a pc
25. Markbass combos get my vote due to being light, loud & sounding great. There's a couple of 3x10 combos on here but I believe you can't use an ext cab as it's already 6 ohms. The 2x10 that I have is a great option, but I haven't seen any s/h lately. G
