1. By George, I think we've done it! Thank you very much for all your input, folks - after a few lengthy email exchanges, it looks like I'll be taking Cherry White to Mother's Ruin on Saturday 30th August! I'll put up more details when I have them - I gather the rest of the lineup has yet to be confirmed.
2. Just heard about this myself - a truly superb player, and a sad loss.
3.
Stand it ? I love it...it's an amazing guitar break. Inspired by John Coltrane's "India" apparently.
Yeah, I'm going to stick up for it too - it is rather Coltrane-esque, just executed on a (12-string?) guitar and played in the context of a rock song rather than jazz. I'll admit my ignorance having not been born 'til about 20 years after this came out, but I get the impression jazz and rock shared a lot of common ground at the time, as opposed to these days when a lot of rock musicians refer to "the 'J' word" with a mix of disgust and fear.
4. I must admit, I had to go back and check! I've been using the rather plain-looking Ascetica. I suppose the key thing is that my blog is just a space for my own ramblings, largely independent of my band. But it's been very easy to upload or link various media to it, and if you're after the benefits of SEO then a lot of the (very little) traffic I receive seems to come from Google searches for bass-related stuff. Here 'tis... http://thecrowfrombelow.wordpress.com/
5.
Ahh yeah, just checked the nut widths. The Diamond P is pretty much a P neck as usual but the T, which is the one I really liked, has more of a Jazz neck. Seems like an odd choice on something that looks like an old Tele bass. Between this and the Jaguar I'm tempted to get something with a thinner neck, put up with it for a while, then swap it out for something chunkier when I can. I know a P neck will fit the Jag, not so sure on the Schecters though.
You may even find you get used to it - I used to be quite set in my preference for chunky P necks, but it stopped bothering me after a while. Unfortunately the Schecters have a 22-fret neck, which will be slightly longer than the standard 20-fret P neck! Though I'm sure there are plenty of manufacturers who could do you a neck to those specs. PS: Yes, couldn't agree more - the T is quite a strange hybrid of old and new! PPS: Will you get a chance to test-drive before buying? Westside, on Denmark Street, has a big stock of Schecter basses in the basement if you're passing through London in the near future.
6.
Schecter diamond P custom sounds just the ticket. They have a very good rep in the bang for buck stakes. http://www.richtonem...CFVMRtAoddlsAGg
I will second the "bang-for-buck" factor of Schecter basses. Gigged my Model T yesterday and realised I'd almost forgotten what a superb instrument it is - and would probably also be within your budget: http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/p/SCH1858/bass-guitars/schecter/schecter-model-t-bass-butterscotch?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=pricecomp&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CNnf0YGVxb8CFcbKtAod6AMAIQ Only thing I would say is that the neck profile may not be quite your cup of tea: it's quite thin, though it has quite a wide fingerboard. Don't know how this compares to the Diamond P.
7. A surprisingly smooth-running affair, given the settings - we were playing at the Foodies Festival, on Bristol Harbourside, and when we got there we learned that there was only one entrance, and that we'd have to schlep our gear through the crowd. Fortunately nobody seemed to mind us doing so, and we had a very enjoyable hour playing to a very appreciative crowd. The festival organisers kindly provided the most state-of-the-art equipment to help us transport our backline:
8. 'fraid we may have to wait a tad longer for the footage. In the meantime, a few more photos from Togfest, courtesy of Kate Davies: https://m.flickr.com/#/photos/katedaviespics/14349200077/in/set-72157645019310267/
9.
Having finally got around to listening to the tune on your website (which is rather good) I think you would be a good fit for Mother's Ruin, Mr Wolf's, The Stag and Hounds, the Cat And Wheel or the Blue Lagoon. The Cat and Wheel and the Blue Lagoon have the advantage of being slap bang in the middle of student land, with good passing trade and you'll get paid - the downside is that they do tend to book up well in advance, so you may only get in if they have a cancellation. This does happen (I get 4 or 5 calls per year form the Lagoon looking to cover cancellations) so it's probably worth dropping them an email anyway.
Thank you! - both for the advice and for checking out the single. The Cat and the Lagoon definitely sound like they're worth trying. I've already been in touch with Mother's Ruin; he did get back to me but we couldn't make the date sadly...and I haven't heard from him since. I shall rattle off some more emails. Ta kindly!
10.
Just had an email from the fleece about upcoming slots available across July, Aug & sept, various nights, various genres wanted. So you should be able to get on a bill there. We (kohiba) only played there last month & will leave it for later in the year before we go back for another gig. Cheers, Norm
Fantastic! Thank you, Norm, I've just dropped them an email so fingers crossed! (Cheers also, Mornats - rest assured if we do play Bristol I'll be making plenty of noise about it on here! Always nice to have the company of a few BCers at a gig)
11. Thank you very kindly for your input, folks! I've now emailed just about every venue on Old Ben's list, plus a couple more. Got a very quick reply from Mother's Ruin; unfortunately offering a date that we can't make, but I remain optimistic. Must get round to contacting a few of the other suggestions in the meantime.
12.
I was at Togfest...never realised you were playing...bummer!
I'm rather hoping there will be some video footage to follow - so you can see what you missed!
13. After a bit of a trawl for photos from the set, it looks like you're right! I can see what you mean though - from a distance it's a dead ringer for a Model T. A Lakland makes a lot more sense though.
14. Was anyone else at Hyde Park BST last Friday, and can anyone confirm whether Geezer was playing a blonde Schecter Model T for the songs they played from Master of Reality?
15.
No DI on this amp
Ah, OK, I stand corrected! (But then I did only own my CTM-15 for 24 hours!)
16. Finally got round to taking a photo of my own setup:
17. More photos of our Togfest shenanigans, courtesy of Andy Powell, one of the event's official photographers: https://flic.kr/p/o9QKPh (More of Andy's work can be found here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/andykpowell/ )
18. And a more recent one, hailing from BC: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hE-2MVZd7vA
19. (NB after some deliberation I thought it might be appropriate to ask here - if the Mods think it would be better in the Gigs section then please feel free to move and accept my apologies for any inconvenience!) Can anyone in or near Bristol point me in the right direction? I need a venue or promoter that might be willing to take a shot on a London-based band and offer us a support slot on, say, a gig with a couple of local bands. Ideally a weekend, but I wouldn't rule out a weekday evening, ideally some time in August or September. As you'll see from my sig, we're playing at a festival in the area in the middle of this month, which would be a great chance for us to plug an upcoming gig...we just need to have an upcoming gig to plug! https://cherrywhite.bandcamp.com/
20.
They want to know your height. WTF?

Looks like the ad may have been placed by the singer - maybe he's a bit vertically challenged and doesn't want anyone taller than him to be in the band... probably best to take a Barefaced Midget, then. Har, har.
Wasn't this the case with the late Mr Dio's band? Obviously there was a limit to what platform heels could achieve, but I have heard that the guitarists were instructed to spread their legs a bit further so they wouldn't tower over him quite so much. Which may have inadvertently led to the "crabcore" phase that...actually may still be going on. I've been reluctant to do research into the matter.
21.
i really dig his style. the guy was mental, and that comes across in his drumming. he's no billy cobham, but thats what makes him more interesting. he's def not sterile.
Yeah, from reading his biography, it seems although he always called himself a "rock drummer," he basically wanted to be Gene Krupa but in a rock n' roll band. (Playing a lot of surf before joining The Who probably helped his crazy style as well.) Probably as a result, I've come to prefer the jazz-drummers-in-rock-bands over straightforward "rock" drummers - so I love the way Moon, Baker*, Mitchell, Densmore, etc relied on their bassist (or Manzarek's left hand) and took diabolical liberties with the beat, but I find e.g., Bonham a bit plodding and unimaginative by comparison**. *Right, I'm now going to have to wear a cricket box for the rest of my life in case Ginger Baker sees that I've put him and Keith Moon in the same sentence and tracks me down... ** I was going to say "leaden," but I think that level of punnage might be a capital offence outside of OT
22.
I've been listening to a lot of these guys, and I've got to say the drumming is amazing. of course the music is fantastic. this track is just…..
Aye, they've been my favourite for something like the last 15 years. I'm sure I'm not the only person on here whose playing style is influenced by / lovingly ripped off from the Ox. And yeah, the drumming - I know a lot of drummers hate Keith Moon, but he had a style, even if it was a style with little-to-no discipline. Dangerous stuff though: once you start to appreciate it, you'll find more conventional "rock" drummers a bit boring to listen to!
23. The first grainy photo of Cherry White onstage at Togfest 2014 (Bradwell Abbey, Milton Keynes), 28th June 2014 I suspect more may follow in due course!
24. A quick placeholder for any photos that may yet turn up from 27th June at the Spice of Life, Soho...
25. Even splendidder. We've just got back from Togfest in Milton Keynes. A really charming little festival, in the idyllic setting of Bradwell Abbey. But most importantly, the crowd seemed to absolutely love it - for the first time ever, we actually sold out of CDs. I think we're all on a bit of a high right now...
