  1. Beware rose-tinted spectacles! I get wistful for basses I've parted with from time to time, but generally there's been a good reason for moving them on. Some have been truly incredible instruments that just didn't quite work for me. That looks pretty fantastic though, maple board too - exactly what I'd want.
  2. Hmmm, thanks for the input everyone, I'm maybe having 2nd thoughts now. The fact the set up was so bad didn't help. This bass is definitely passive. We had one very similar back when I worked in the music shop all those years ago, and annoyingly I can't remember much about it playability/sound-wise, but I was 5 string averse at the time!
  3. Thanks, I was in music retail about early 00's and never thought much of the US Fenders tbh, but you'd get the odd gem come along. I've a feeling this one might be a player with a good set up, so guess it might be worth a punt at the right price.
  4. I've come across one of these, looks like it's from 2001 judging by the serial number. It's the version where the machine heads are all in line, not 4 + 1 like the current models. It would be an American Standard I guess (passive). Tje set up is shocking, but provided the truss rod is ok, I'm tempted. It's light and seems nicely resonant. Overall condition is pretty good. Anybody got any experience, good or bad of this era Jazz V, before I take the plunge? Any idea on value would be helpful too!
  5. That looks great 👍 very reasonable price too.
  6. Outstanding!
  7. Really like the look of these. If they did a 5 string Jazz I'd be all over it!
  8. A P-bass with a Batman sticker on the pickguard, and oddly mismatched pickup pole pieces?! 😉
  9. .. and the Sadowskys too!
  10. Nice De Gier!!
  11. Thanks for removing the temptation of this from the BD website! Looks awesome - enjoy
  12. This is similar to an experience I had. Not enough to completely put me off, but it has made me cautious. I'll make a trip next time I'm really interested in a bass. I think the underlying issue in my case was that it was probably a commission sale that hadn't been very carefully checked over. Couldn't fault the speed of service.
  13. I've not been in music retail for quite a few years now, but at the time the independents were putting huge pressure on the likes of Fender abd Yamaha to try and even the playing field so they could compete. Often we'd see instruments priced pretty much at what we could get them at trade price for. It's a tricky one as the consumer both wins and loses through lower pricing but reduced options from where to buy (which is ultimately what happens when independents can't compete any longer).
  14. Very jealous. Love Mike Watt and love the look of the Mk2 Wattplower.💚
  15. Wal balance pots are wired like that too.
  16. I'm in the "as low as it will go' team as well, although I've experimented with raising the action slighlty on a couple of basses, and find that on some instruments I actually like it. Having said that, they're still set low. Almost more important to me is the neck relief - I run almost none and find for my tastes and playing style this almost always gives me the string response (for want of a better description) I'm looking for.
  17. If it sounds great, why bother? It'll sound different, but whether you'd like it more - as good as Nordstrands are - is difficult to know! Looks a lovely bass to me. Either way, enjoy
  18. Just had another look, and whilst it's a bit bling for me, maybe the Liberace comparison isn't very fair. World would be boring if we all had the same tastes, after all.
  19. Not a fan of the look, I have to say. The knobs and gold hardware combined with the admittedly-well-executed finish are a little too Liberace for me! https://images.app.goo.gl/YcH8U21EvYsHAksq9
  20. Thank you! 😊
  21. Thanks all, this is great. Any router recommendations?
  22. Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but I was hoping for some advice from some of you more seasoned builders as to what would be a good start-up tool/equipment set up. I'm not thinking about finishing at this stage, just the woodworking stuff you'd recommend to give me a half decent shot at making an OK job at it (skills and stupidity notwithstanding 😆). I do have some cash saved up which I was planning on spending on a course, but now thinking why don't I just dive in and plunder the extensive online resources and generous basschat hive mind!? One thing in my favour is I worked as a guitar tech for best part of a decade, so although somewhat rusty, I do have a degree of confidence around setup and fretwork. Thanks in advance!
