When I had an SWR Grand Prix I replaced the 12AX7 with a NOS 5751. Here's what I said about it "I replaced the original tube with a NOS triple mica 5751. Less hyped highs, tighter lows, more transparent. Less gain though (as with all 5751s) so may not be suitable if your bass has a low output." voxpop, have you ever tried a Class A discrete component preamp like an Avalon U5? That has a remarkable way of bringing out every last detail from your bass yet sounds even cleaner and smoother than the valve preamps I've tried.
Hi Alex, The u5 is on my list of things to try......does anyone have a u5 for sale?

One notable valve 'character' that I'd love to find out more about is the 'upward compression' or parallel compression effect. In simple terms, quiet sounds - i.e. light playing appears to be a lot louder through my preamp in ratio to loud sounds than if I bypass the preamp and plug directly in to the head's power amplifier. I also found this with my other valve preamp - the effect being even more pronounced when I took a DI feed post valve pre passive EQ. I like it - I like it alot! It's like compression - well - I it IS compression, but there is very little limiting of loud sounds, hence the 'upward/parallel' description. I feel this is what people refer to when they describe valve pre amplifiers as bringing out detail in music - because they are amplifying quieter passages in music much more and in a pleasing way Vs the more linear gain of a device such as a transistor/Op Amp. This is why I started to use valves for bass playing. I love the way they compress the sound giving a "bloom" or warmth to the bass, it sounds very natural to my ears. I no longer use a compressor pedal with valve amps........no need to with this natural conpression effect.
The gain of a preamp is a function of both the gain that a given valve is capable of and also the actual preamp design. i.e. not every 12AX7 in every preamp will produce a gain of 100, and it may be as little as 30 or 40 or even less, depending. OTOH different valves, even of the same type, sound different, let alone when you start swapping out different designs. I like the sound of 'lower gain' valves (12AT7s particularly) in preamps designed for 12AX7s - the tone can often be sweeter or more detailed, and with more headroom. Since bass doesn't generally rely on preamp overdrive for it's core tone then I'd suggest there's a lot to be gained by trying different valves, including the 5751.
I have had the same "the tone can often be sweeter or more detailed, and with more headroom" from the 5751. I liked the so much I have put them in my Rogue 88 power amp for hifi use. I have ECC83's in the VOX V125b as I like the slight overdrive they can give with the volume knob on full. I tried 5751 and ECC81 but this cleaned the sound to much.

FOR SALE....Reubenzehn Daniel D Bass Deluxe Tubebooster

I have for sale a Reubenzehn Daniel D Bass Deluxe Tubebooster. This amazing valve booster can be used it so many ways. I wanted to get a valve sound from the various non valve amps that I used to own so started to look for a pedal / effect that produced a genuine valve sound. After hunting high and low I came across this tube booster. At first it just looks like any old valve booster but I soon discovered it can do so so much more. It can be used as a simple valve warm up stage by plugging in your bass and out putting the 'boosted valve sound' straight into your amp. The volume control on the back near the in / out sockets control the gain / boost to the valve. At the 4-5 position it is about unity gain matching the volume of your bass but with warm valve sound. If you start to turn the knob to 6-7 the valve starts to overdrive, this give a real nice rock / blues sound. If you push it harder to 8-10 the volume increases and the unit starts to give a fantastic fuzz that only a valve can give. All this is straight forward, it can be used to simply warm up a SS amp or set it to give a boost in your volume for solo parts or heavy songs. Now things start to get interesting with the other features........ On the side is a 4 position knob that reduces the bass frequencies with each turn. Position 4 is full deep bass, 3 is more neutral, 2 has reduced bass and 1 hardly any bass. This is the interesting bit...... If you connect the pedal into an effects loop with a balance control or blender you can reduce the bass frequencies that come out of the booster and mix it in with the original bass sound. This will overdrive the mids and tops and keep the bass frequencies clean. Also I found that with a very heavy overdrive sound the bass frequencies can get muddled so with a flick of the 4 position knob the bass can be cleaned up. What this pedal does not do.......... If you want to switch between the bypass sound and the overdrive and keep the level the same the pedal will have to be modified with some kind of volume knob to control the effect level. At first I thought this was missed by the designer. It is after all a booster to lift your volume / sound. There is also a pop whenever the 4 position knob is first used, this must have something to do with the caps discharging ( I'm sure someone could explain this better than me ) After the knob has been turned it will not pop again. There is also a switch the 'seems' to drop the volume and lower the bass frequencies when used, I found the sound to be completely unusable so never really bothered with it. The pedals has had a new foot switch, the cable has been upgraded to silver and at some point I think the caps that control 4 position switch have been upgraded. The valve can also be swapped out if you want to change the gain level, an ECC83 will give full on overdrive, ECC81 will give a gentle boost and an ECC82 will give no boost - just a warming effect. I can supply a different valve if you want to change the ECC83 it comes with. I am only selling this because I now use a VOX valve amp. Offered at £100 + £5 postage. I am willing to offer a 7 day money back ( £100 ) if you are not completely happly with this unit....... I have only ever seen another one of these units, they are very rare. Pictures will follow.... Like must of us here, I have used all different configurations in my time. But I keep on coming back to 2 x 12 cabs. Cant explain why in a few words other than it sounds and feels more natural for my playing style. What I have found is not all 2 x 12 cabs sound the same, so once you have found your 'ideal' speaker size the nightmare of what make of cab comes along. After buying and selling many, I decided to have one built by Zilla Cabs using my favourite 12" drivers from Celestion. This is what makes bass playing fun...............the never ending expense and the continual state of confusion.
