1. I just built a Fuzz Face variant, and got an incredibly good peaches sound, by accident. So maybe he used one of those.
2. If you give your bass, and several hundred quid, to a renowned techy, and if he secretly does precisely nothing to it and then gives it you back, it will subjectively sound better. If you give him more money it will sound even better. Fact.
3. Volume at 11 means the power is now at your fingertips, not in the volume control. Also softer playing to me sounds more musical and rounded.
4. I wonder if you can make a bass out of a ring tailed lemur.
5. With the Ivory you could make the most illegal piano in the world. We may be raping African wildlife, but at least we're helping fight racism.
6. maybe get an overwound jazz bridge pickup, sould sound darker
7. IIRC the grubs hold the pickup in place, and they are also prone to breaking their thread, so be careful.
8.
I'd expect that you'd have to order enough strings to make the cost of shipping worth it, but not too many that you go over the customs and excise threshold.(which will probably make you cough up for VAT Annnnd the admin fee added by the courier. Usually around 8 quid. I'm guessing that would be one set of bass strings and thus, more likely to save money by going to the likes of Stringbusters or Strings Direct?
yeah i think the threshold is £15.
9.
To the OP, you might have to bite the bullet and fill the current holes and just get some proprietary ones e.g. Wilkinson etc. off eBay. If you go for the 70s Fender style Gotoh ones they are massive so should easily cover the holes you have!
Head stock is quite small. I guess filling isn't such a bad option. Time to find some matchsticks.

Pickup height

if the string gets too close to the magnet it creates a chorus-like effect
11. In small venues, the majority of the bass reaching your ears will have been reflected many different ways. There is little any speaker configuration can do.
12. If you are really neurotic about horizontal dispersion on 4x10s, you can just put a brick under one corner of your cab.
13. A live venue is not an anechoic chamber. It is impossible to predict how a particular speaker arrangement will behave in any given venue.
14.
I have messaged the add holder. I've been cheeky and asked for £150!
It might just work.
15.
Thanks for all the advice, guys! I continue to search and am still open to advise/offers.
did you check out the one in darlington?
16.
Optical Comps are not banned per se. But the materials used in the photo-receptors used in some opto-comps are banned under RoHS,
has this had any impact on any well loved ones? or do manufacturers not use the cadmium LDRs any longer?
17. I recently bought a 2nd hand 300W ashdown combo for exactly £200. Highly recommended. The issue is transporting the thing from where you buy it. Use gumtree for local stuff. Can you make it to Darlington? This is over priced as it is an old model and equivalent to the £200 one I bought but in cab/amp. So offer him £200 and wait. http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/ashdown-bass-amp/106463808
18. Is it true that optical compressors are banned by the EU?
19.
It seems to be out of tune everytime I pick it up.
Leaning it on the tuners when you put it down?
20. 18 posts on mixing cabs and no one has talked about phase.
21. A cable coming out of an instrument, particularly a passive one, or a mic, is probably the one place it matters most, especially the quality of the screening and the soldered joints.
22. I bought the 4x10 307 watt MAG combo for £200 off gumtree (original, not evo II or evo III) which is a bit of a step up. So I'm thinking £140 tops. But a very good value buy nevertheless.
23. i would just adjust pickup height downward on the low strings.
24. My fave hooky bass line. 2 notes and some sliding, but perfect. Ok more than 2 notes. Just.
