I just built a Fuzz Face variant, and got an incredibly good peaches sound, by accident. So maybe he used one of those.

If you give your bass, and several hundred quid, to a renowned techy, and if he secretly does precisely nothing to it and then gives it you back, it will subjectively sound better. If you give him more money it will sound even better. Fact.

Volume at 11 means the power is now at your fingertips, not in the volume control. Also softer playing to me sounds more musical and rounded.

I wonder if you can make a bass out of a ring tailed lemur.

maybe get an overwound jazz bridge pickup, sould sound darker

IIRC the grubs hold the pickup in place, and they are also prone to breaking their thread, so be careful.

In small venues, the majority of the bass reaching your ears will have been reflected many different ways. There is little any speaker configuration can do.

If you are really neurotic about horizontal dispersion on 4x10s, you can just put a brick under one corner of your cab.

A live venue is not an anechoic chamber. It is impossible to predict how a particular speaker arrangement will behave in any given venue.

I recently bought a 2nd hand 300W ashdown combo for exactly £200. Highly recommended. The issue is transporting the thing from where you buy it. Use gumtree for local stuff. Can you make it to Darlington? This is over priced as it is an old model and equivalent to the £200 one I bought but in cab/amp. A cable coming out of an instrument, particularly a passive one, or a mic, is probably the one place it matters most, especially the quality of the screening and the soldered joints.

I bought the 4x10 307 watt MAG combo for £200 off gumtree (original, not evo II or evo III) which is a bit of a step up. So I'm thinking £140 tops. But a very good value buy nevertheless.
