1. If you do go for the amp with the separate speaker terminals I guess you know where to get them, seeing as he's posted a picture of just the thing.
 2. Probably very nice for someone who enjoys the steampunk look, but unfortunately this would sit under a pickup cover so you'd never see it.
 3.
It is more likely that Ivor copied / refined the design of the Thorens TD150. I asked him this question once. He didn't deny it. Have had LP12 t/t since 1973. Latest is current spec. Through a Linn 5103 pre-amp into a pair of Krell KSA100 power amps driving a pair of Apogee Caliper signature speakers. Digital formats are through Linn Akurate DS streaming player.
Nice system. Both the RD11 and Sondek clearly owed a lot to Thorens, but the Ariston and Linn also shared a factory for some engineering - owned by Ivor's father.

 5.
I think the only route to lightweight valve sound is valve pre/digital power amp!
SMPS like the VB3? That only weighs in at 37lbs for a 300w amp with a lot of features on the front end. Not genuinely lightweight but a featherweight for a valve amp.
 6.
Yes, only since about 1972! But due to financial constraints it may have to be a Thorens TD or similar.
Get an Ariston RD11 - essentially the same thing only much cheaper, to buy nowadays that is. There was some controversy over who actually invented the Sondek, with the founder of Ariston having originally gone to Ivor Tiffanbraun (sp?) to manufacture them. I had the Sondek, my brother had the RD11 ('S' version I think) and they sounded very, very similar with the Ariston sounding a bit more exciting for rock. Though maybe that was the arm - we weren't bothered enough to swap the tonearms.
 7. If someone learns a song to a play along on Youtube surely they're still training their ear? They've still got to listen to the part and figure out what's going on. They might be learning the 'wrong' bassline but then again I've seem transcriptions with what I've thought are mistakes in them. Is it not ear training to learn a part that someone else has worked out and hear it's wrong?
 8.
wow thanks for all the responses guys! I'm still a bit confused but thanks for making the effort I now have the RS210 combined with the Promethean and it does sound nice. The person i bought it from has another one for sale (very good price!) so my question now is...... if I have two RS10s would an RH450 be okay for them? and would I link them in parallel or in series? (see I have learned something! ) http://www.tcelectronic.com/rh450/
Like Dad says, you can run two RS210s with the RH450 - in fact TC specifically say up can run three of the cabs with it. As for the series/parallel thing, it's pretty much standard for amp outputs and cabs' sockets to be wired in parallel - I've only ever heard of a couple of combos where the extension socket is wired in series. To run the vast majority of cabs in series would require a special lead to by made up.
 9.
The other one would be "The Wave" hardcore bands ...
That's a new one on me, so thanks for that (I think!).
 10.
Lots of presuming there though isn't there? If we are presuming then I'm presuming the 150 watt voice coil will get ruined by the possible maximum wattage going through it? Unlike a regular amp all you can do is send half the original power to an eternal driver, it's more like cutting a 2x10 cab in half than actually adding a cab, so adding a 2x10 is like having an 8 ohm 150 watt max 1x10 and 400 watt 2x10 in parallel, would we normally advise that as a good setup?I'd say no?
Assuming each driver had the same excursion capabilities that scenario would usually be advised against because the 1x10 would be likely to run out of Xmax before the 2x10. But in this case there's a 1x10 which still has the excursion capabilities of a 300w speaker. Of course that does presume comparable excursion capabilities of the speakers, which may be a big presumption...
 11.
No, no and thrice times no. In combo mode, the 2 speakers share the power from the amp. Assuming amp is giving its maximum (very unlikely, but just for the numbers...), each speaker will receive 150w of the 300w total. Once an external cab is connected, one of the speakers receives nothing, the other shares the 300w in exactly the same fashion as before, ie: 150w for the combo speaker,150w for the external cab (assuming equal impedance of internal speaker to external cab...). There. I hope small children can follow that, at least.
This is getting confusing. Isn't that what I said? Well sort of - this is a 1x10 combo we're talking about, albeit with a tricksy 2 8 ohm coils in parallel. So the point I was attempting to describe was that the cone wouldn't crap out as it was designed to handle 300W on it's own.
 12.
With an 8 ohm extension cab, surely the remaining internal speaker will simply receive its current wattage..? What difference would it make having an extension cab, compared to its neighbour..? It won't even notice the difference, I'd say. If the extra cab is more efficient than the second, disconnected, combo speaker, there'll be more volume (albeit not enormously more...), but the amp and 'working' speaker won't be affected.
This echoes my thoughts as well. The speaker is unlikely to crap out as it can handle 300W with both coils engaged and presumably has enough excursion to handle that adequately. As I understand it all that is happening is one of the coils is being switched out of the circuit (and so handling the same amount of power as before) while the cone is now being pushed less hard as it's only seeing 150W?
 13.
But were they part of a scene involving music and fashion?
The Nu Rave scene certainly had its own fashion which even made it into Top Shop and H&M, both shops that pounce on emerging trends with almost alarming efficiency. As for Dubstep I really wouldn't know but then I'm not really familiar with the ins and outs of the dance scene. I'd be highly surprised if there wasn't some distinguishing style features, but you'd have to be able to interpret the fashion before you could identify it with a particular scene. I doubt my mother would have the foggiest idea about identifying grunge or trash fans.
 14.
I hate to be obvious, but if I want more volume/power, I add another amplifier (and speaker/s if not a combo) - dilemma sorted...........
I think it depends on where you're starting from really. Doubling the number of speakers and halving the impedance can give up to a 6dB increase in volume, equivalent to four times the power. So if someone's using a 500W amp they'll be looking for a 2000W amp (and most likely the speakers to handle it). It just ends up being a different kind of dilemma. Edit: I just realised you said another amplifier and speakers. As you were...
 15.
That is only a marketing ploy. Any 3 8 ohm cabs will work with the TC heads because these heads go to 2.67 ohms. I used to use 3 Bergantino cabs.
Probably. The thing is speakers are rated at the lowest point in their impedance curve and then rounded off to the nearest standard point, which with bass cabs is usually 2, 4 or 8 ohms. So if the TC amp can only be truly used safely down to 2.67 ohms and the 3 8 ohm cabs you choose to pair it with happen to actually dip below 8 ohms you might find yourself in trouble. So TC are just covering themselves really. And trying to sell more of their products.
 16. I just thought I'd address the OP's question re the TC cab. Although the RS is rated at 400w the doesn't mean that an amp will put out 400W into it. It just means that it can handle up to 400w for prolonged periods of time - above that things will start to melt in the cab. So the cab can't be too powerful for the amp as it only receives the power, it doesn't pull the power from the amp.
 17. Before buying a new pickup it might be worth checking that the old one is actually dead. Quite often people think that the pickup has died because there's no output from the instrument, but it can turn out that it's just a case of faulty wiring. If you haven't done so already you should break out a multimeter/continuity tester and check the pickup.
 18. In my first gigging band we used to lay a pair of these across the front of the stage as vocal monitors, and fed with a 100W HH slave they used to do a fairly decent job of letting us hear the vocals. But I'd agree with Dad - they're probably not up to providing the bottom end for bass, although I've got to admit I never tried. Mind you my favourite 'bass' cab of all time has been a Marshall 4X12 guitar cab, so what do I know.
 19.
Whatever music + fashion scene may be happening, I'm pretty sure by the time it made it onto my radar, the kids will be getting bored of the next thing. There's a stack of underground music happening all the time, and fashion runs in parallell. It's just a long long way from discussions about music stands and Bill Bruford.
+1 to that. I don't think most members on here are best placed to recognise any new genres or sub-cultures that might be happening, but it might seem that the days of any big movements [insert your own joke] are gone for a variety of reasons that don't bear rehashing. I'd second emo as the last rock based genre that had an identifiable fashion and attitude to go with it, but I suspect there's far more going on in the dance scene than I'll ever know about.
 20. I saw this when he advertised it last time. Tea Chest=£10, broom handle/dowel=£3, string=£1. Breaking out the jigsaw and cutting a hole=£71.
 21.
isnt that what markbass or mesa or soneone did?
I think Peavey did with the VB3.
 22. I'm wondering whether the pre-amp of the Rootmaster suffers from the same problem as the old LG's - low output. The cure on the LG was to use some kind of boost pedal in the effects loop. It'd be rather strange if it is the problem as Ashdown seem to have sorted this with the Mibass series (I don't remember anyone complaining they were quiet). It might be worth having a word the place you bought it (assuming it is new) or shoot Ashdown an email explaining the situation - their customer service is excellent.
 23. "Low frequency manager". I'm officially nabbing that for myself. Welcome to the forum.
 24. Really sorry to hear that Rick. Good that you're looking on the positive side of things though.
