1. This is great! I would just stop and let it stay like this. Maple neck on this would look just awesome.
2. Yeah, they can be filed down (the side facing the bridge plate, don't file the key slot side...)
3. Brass requires much much more regular practice time than guitar (I played tuba rather well during my teenage+ years and today I couldn't sustain one single note). This is just too much work for most kids today...
4.
I was even working out if point to point would be feasible!
I've already seen simpler pedals done this way.

6. There are fab houses that will happily etch your board for you but it costs money... Check your local electronics hackerspaces, they may help you to etch yours on their equipement and generally bootstrap your electronics projects.
7.
I actually really like these. I mainly use Overwater lights now which I swear are the same strings as they sound similar and have the same drop-off rate of brightness. I find on my basses they have an overly sharp zing that dies off quickly and then settle in the sweet post (for me) for a long time before falling off dead. I don't like over-zingy strings though so maybe what you don't like about them is what I love about them! How do the Fenders compare against them? Are they brighter for longer? Do they give you more cutting mids? I've never tried them and at least one of my basses needs restringing soon...
Yeah, definitely brighter and staying bright longer as you say. More cutting mids - dont know, maybe.
8.
never saw that post....the last one i saw fender has built a new factory for string production! Thats the tb for you.
People post so much there, it is easy to overlook anything. Any piece of useful information can be drowned by "conventional wisdom"....
9. Take a look at this video from Stewmac, in it Dan Erlewine shows how to repare a chip in the finish, seems like it is what you'se searching for, Phil! http://www.stewmac.com/tsarchive/ts0174.html
10.
Hm, I'm impressed with the CV and was just thinking the VM P5 might be my "give five a go" bass.
Other than not really well matched body wood pieces, my P5 is one very likeable bass!
11.
ps there is/was a very long thread on tb as to who made fender strings.....i thought after all the rumours/red herrings/bloke down pub-shop posts that fender do make strings afterall?
The guy responsible for new Fender strings lineup development posted on Talkbass. They are definitely made by D'addario but the specs came from him personnally (Fender).
12. GHS bass boomers: lifeless and anonymous. They would be good for spies I guess: nobody will notice you Labella Supersteps: great sound, but short life and starts having intonation issues as it ages (rapidely) Elixirs: disentagrating dirty coating sticking out everywhere disgusts me way too much. D'addario Chromes: unconsistent tone from G to E (over-bright G to dull E). I find Fender flats much better in this regard. DR Neons: I hate their feel under the fingers. Over the years I settled to Fender strings: cheap, dependable and giving me the sound I like. I really wanted to hate Fenders, tried them all and liked them in the end...
13.
Hi all, Any advice appreciated as to wether I only need new pots or my bass should be wired differently. I always play my Ric copy in the middle position and I'm finding the following problem, When in the middle if I back off the volume pots (to blend the tone slightly differently) more than 3/4 open then that pickup dissapears completely. In simple if I take the treble pickup out slightly the tone will be the same as the neck pickup on its own. Just to clarify it isn't wired to be master tone/master vol in the middle as some are. Just wanted to pick brains to see if I should be wired up slightly differently or just need to upgrade to better quality pots. Cheers
Two things come to my mind: 1) If your bass has log pots, you may have better results replacing volume pots with linear type (do not touch tone pots though). 2) It is possible you're plugging your bass into a low-impedance input (like direct into a mixing board input without DI). Passive volume controls work the best when plugged into a high-impedance inputs. Most bass amps are ok in this regard, but sound cards, mixing boards aren't. Unless they have special inputs marked Hi-Z or similar, you'll be better off going through a DI box...
14.
I use a Yamaha Pocketrak W24 to record rehearsals and gigs, never had any problems with it. This was recorded at a recent gig by the yamaha just lying by the sound board: My Dog
I use the same recorder since 2 or 3 years. Always worked well for me, and the battery lasts forever.
15. UK sellers are far more willing to send abroad (to France anyway) than USA sellers, from my experience...
16. I'd rock it (if I liked Stingray-like basses which I don't). The colour is beautiful.
17. Lots of great basses in this thread! Makes me want another black bass again The ones I had in the past (don't own any of these anymore): Jolana Galaxy (cheap but well built Checkoslovakian- made shortscale from the 80-s) Musicman Stingray V Squier Jazz Deluxe V Ibanez Gary Willis sig GWB-35 "PBuzz" - parts bass I've built from a Hohner fretless neck and aftermarket ash body I've painted black. My next black bass will be a fretless maple-necked Precision for sure
18. If you put your 500K pots between the pickups and the preamp, they will do just fine. You need 25K only if your volume control(s) is(are) situated after the preamp (between the preamp and the output jack). In your case (two volumes and passive tone control), you have to have these between the pickups and the preamp, therefore 500K is a good choice.
19. Thanks! There are others in the works (passive "drive" and passive mid-freq cut)
20. I'll let it bare I think.
21. 100% passive, no battery required multy-capacitor tone control (not far from what Stellartone does I guess). 9 caps from 470 pF to 0.2 mF give it very wide tonal variety!
22. I like what Christian McBide is doing on an electric fretless.
