1. I have a set of green hi-def neons on one of my basses since one week. These strings are strange: very rough feeling under the fingers, won't slide easily. Like if the coating had some invisible grit in it. Sound is good however, slightly muffled highs but still very articulate.
2. Hello, Everybody! I am selling this beautiful bass: switching to 5 string fretless, and my GAS-restriction policy doesn't allow me to have both I am in France, but maybe you guys there over the channel are interested too [s]I am asking 650 EUR plus shipping (will use UPS as a carrier) = £600 delivered.[/s] £500 delivered Will consider trades - shortscales or PB-likes as well as studio gear is welcome! Hagström Scanbasses were produced between 1973 et 1978 I believe. They were called Jazz Bass first but Hagström was forced to change the name to avoid lawsuits from Fender. This one is in the best condition possible for its age, really rare. The bass is 100% playable, it has no problems whatsoever. Electronics was dead (non-functioning pickups, bad pots) when I've bought it but completely restored since then. Basic facts: = 34" = one-piece mahogany body, beautiful trans-red finish . = mahogany neck, bolt-on, = unlined ebony fingerboard in exemplary condition = two single-coil pickups = passive electronics volume - balance - tone = mahogany is rather heavy however the balance is perfect, no neck dive at all This bass DON'T sound quite like Jazz Bass, surely enough because of the employed woods, mahogany-mahogany-ebony is not what we'd expect from Fender! It gives much more lows and low mids than usual fretless Jazzbass. Just to illustrate this, one small cover for you: http://dolganov.free.fr/bass/hagstrom-bloody_sunday.mp3 This bass imitates quite well fretless Precision (or was it Ibanez Musician on the "message in the bottle" already?) "Message in a bottle" (with pick): http://dolganov.free.fr/bass/hagstrom-mess...in_a_bottle.mp3 "So Lonely" (fingerstyle): http://dolganov.free.fr/bass/hagstrom-so_lonely.mp3 Wooooood! Electronics: old pots (horrible and cheap): new ones, "alpha" brand
3. (year in - year out) or * if still owned (1991 - 2009) 4 string fretless of unknown make, most probably project bass made by some amateur. It was my one and only bass for 14 years... Sold it to my friend after vintage Hagström showed in. (2005 - *) Hombuilt 4 str. medium scale 32", nicknamed "Zebra" because of Zebrawood body, now stringed as piccolo (2006 - *) Homebuilt 5 str. 34", nicknamed "Terra". I use it for all "modern" stuff I play. (2007 - *) Strunal carved top upright. Great instrument, wish I played it better and more often (2008 - 2008) MIA Fender Precision 1998 maple neck, beautiful trans cream body but didn't sound too well, surprisingly weak E and awful dead spots. Traded to: (2008 - 2008) EBMM SR 5, 2003, Black + maple. Liked how it sounded but disliked sharp edges of the body killing my right wrist. Anyway, I liked my "Terra" much more, traded SR 5 for Yamaha EUB: (2008 - 2009) Yamaha SLB-200 Electric Upright, sold because I played acoustic more often anyway. (2008 - 2009) Jolana Galaxis, shortscale Jazz clone made in soviet Chechoslovakia. Very fun bass, actually quite well made, with full vintage sound. Sold it to another friend. (2008 - 2009) Warmoth Jazz, ash + maple, mounted from kit by myself, traded for Warwick: (2009 - 2009) Warwick Stage One 1991, my dream bass I couldn't afford when I started bass in 1991 being broke student. Finally when I got it, it sounded every bit as good as I imagined but I didn't like its handling, too different from full-sized basses I was using last 18 years. (2009 - 2009) Fender MIM 60's Classic Series Jazz, sunburst. Hated the thing right from the start - dull pickups, sticky orange colored neck, ugly sunburst, sold it the same month. (2009 - *) Hagström Scanbass Fretless 1977, in NOS condition but with dead pickups. I've rewound the pickups and now it is working like new. (2009 - *) Squier Vintage modified Telebass, got it for modding. Now lying in bits waiting for new pickups. (2010 - *) Squier Affinity PB, bought at the crazy sale with 65% rebate. Strung with heavy flats, it is my main Blues and Rock bass now. Amazing value, good sound. I plan to add Jazz pickup to it somewhere in the future, or maybe a second P!
4. If you want to be able to bow sometimes, you are automatically limited to orchestra or hybrid strings. Then if you want to slap too, I'd guess the best choice can be found somewhere between low tension hybrids like TI Spirocore Solo, D'addario Helicore Solo or Pirastro Obligato solo... I've Helicore solos on my double bass, they are quite bright, they bow well and pizzicato sounds great too. However they don't produce very high volume, certainly due to their low mass. I had Spiros Orchestra before, they were much louder. (I don't slap so I've no opinion on slap sound from these...)
5. I actually have done this parallel mod already! And even tried something more
6. To show you the 'interesting' part: 4-string homebrewn bass nicknamed "Zebra": http://www.flickr.com/photos/dolganoff/set...57605372018406/ 5-string homebrewn bass nicknamed "Terra": http://www.flickr.com/photos/dolganoff/set...57612231734977/ Hagström: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dolganoff/set...57616307018914/
7. Hello, everyone! As you can see, I was subscribed since 2008 but this is yet my first message on the board I live near Paris, I'm 36 and switched to bass from guitar 19 years ago and never looked back... I am much more active on the french bass-related forum www.onlybass.com but will try to come here more often, you seem like nice crowd to hang with And your classifieds section is awesome too (not helping my GAS addiction!) My current gear: Two homemade basses (4 and 5 str fretted), Hagström Scanbass 1978 fretless, Squier Vint.Mod. Telecaster bass, Squier Affinity Precision, Strunal upright bass. My main amp is Roland Bass Cube 100 and I am in the process of restoration of one old italian all-tube stack from 50-s or 60-s I don't have a band right now, I play many styles from pop to rock to funck to blues to jazz. Cheers!
