So for the last 3 months I have been working my ass off in a start up covers act which was going to be a belting band.... Until the singer walked on Monday. So with the band on agreed hiatus, I have come to the realisation that I have spent most of my playing years trying to learn to play by playing other people's music, and at the age of 34 I have not found my own "voice" yet. So in attempt to find out who I am musically ( I realise I am starting to sound like a bit of a w@£ker but bare with me) I have decided to go on a music fast. For the next three months I am NOT going to play anyone else's bass lines, and I will be VERY selective about what music I let enter my ears. I am going to learn the theory I always swore I would get around to one day with the help of some books, the amazing Scott Devine and his online tutelage, and a lot of patience! But this brings me to the point of this post, I need some advice on creating a greatest hit cd with which to feed my mind and inspire me to greater things. Now most of us as bassists will admit that the most proficient of us have out roots in the jazz genre, but as someone from the other side of the fence, I could use a little help with this mix tape to save my soul! Now I'm tipping that pastorius and Jameson etc will feature quite high, I could use some specific jazz tracks to inspire me on to greater things. Having said that if someone wants to put forward some Bernard Hopkins, Bootsie Collins or Larry Graham chops, there would be no objections here! Thanks for your help guys n gals, Naive rock/metal bassist!!

I would love to hear from someone who has owned or played both the sub 5 and the sr5 regarding the neck feel. Are they similar in dimensions? I know the sub is painted so will probably be a little stickier, but I'm more interested in the neck thickness front to back?

Good shout Rob, to my ears at least, it has the most unique voice of any bass. Regardless of who plays it, you can always pick a ray out of the mix! I seriously want one too!

I saw one of these for sale last week in a store, can't get it out of my head now, the more I look into them the better they look. Well maybe not look better, but I want one more! Real shame about the choice of finishes...

By the time "master if puppets was out they were (at least I think they were) the highest selling thrash metal band, but you are correct that the sales of the black album dwarf any in their earlier releases. I heard Lars interviewed and he was discussing "selling out". in his mind at least, if they had kept making the same music and selling the same sound to the same fans to him was selling out. The band wanted to try something different, and for them it worked well. For the fans who just wanted more of the same angry thrash, they felt short changed and metallica had sold out. Personally I think "master of puppets" was their master piece, they havnt had the same authenticity since puppets, but "justice" and "metallica" are stonking albums, "load" and "reload" by metallica's own admition were and sound a little forced, but have some shining moments. St Anger is literally the soundtrack to rehabilitation, and it is painfull to listen to, all the more so if you are a fan I the band and have seen some kind if monster. I can't wait for their next album, I hope and pray it is more of "death magnetic" vibe, hopefully rick Rubin won't ruin it this time. As far as the movie goes, is it the right thing to do? Plenty of other bands have done a similar thing, and besides it gives me a chance to get my revenge on the mrs for all the romantic comedy films I have had to endure over the years.

I'm surprise no body has blamed the demise of metallica on Cliff's death..... That usually cops the brunt of most if these threads. I got into 'tallica around the time the black album came out and I remember being blown away by enter sandman and sad but true. I quickly went down the rabbit hole, and discovered cliff, and their first three albums. "Justice" has never say well with me, and can't point out why, but when load and reload came out I turned away as it had "gone soft". After years without metallica in my life I am back hooked on it, and on some level appreciate ALL of their stuff, but I think death magnetic is a triumphant return. Rob is an awesome player and goes a long way to restoring the groove missing since cliff died. I saw them two years ago, and they were amazing!

+1 to the sounding like someone else point. We all have our own voice on an instrument and it is as unique as our voice or fingerprint. Better off to be the best "you" you can be

First and foremost "never" is a bloody long time. To the op I side with you, anything can be achieved with enough time and hard work. To the post about being outclassed on guitar by your drummer, learn from it and don let someone else ruin you love of playing bass. Playing an instrument is no different to any other skill, unfortunately there are some people who are naturally inclined towards it. Usually these talents are picked up early in life and nurtured by our parents/mentors and we continue to improve. Like most things we do in life, it's an inside (mental) game. What motivates us matters more than anything else. People who can pick up a guitar and play it easily straight away enjoy it and therefore more likely to spend time doing it. If you struggle to pick it up, you are probably going to have to work damn hard and improvement will be slow, therefore more likely to dwell on it and be one discouraged. Personally I really struggle on bass at times, because I have small hands. But I LOVE playing and want to be an awesome player (currently couldn't be any further from that by the way) so I dedicate time every day to playing and making small improvements. I'm a long way from where I want to be, but at the same time I am a long way from where I started!

Seymour Duncan spb3 quarter pounder are awesome p bass pickups, really growly. The sj3-b is also good (this is the set I have in my mike dirnt) but being single coil it picks up a little noise. Maybe check out the stk-j2b which is a double coil but still same size (same bridge pickup as the duff Sig bass) but overall I'm really happy with mine!

I'm not a huge fan of the aerodyne myself, can't quite figure why but it doesn't do much for me. You could get a mark hoppus signature bass, and then add a jazz bridge pickup, then you don't need the scratch plate. Might need to add a volume pot though. If you really wanted a jazz neck you could do a trade via these pages. There are plenty of people wanting a precision neck on a jazz bass so you shouldn't have a problem. You should e able to get this done for your budget or close to it.

No problem at all. I did exactly the same thing to my mike dirnt signature. To my knowledge I've not seen a slab bodies p/j with tele headstock before, so it is quite unique. At te end of the day, if you can't find what you want made by someone else, then make it yourself. As far as depreciation goes, I can't see it being a problem, I can't imagine that you are the first person who has wanted this done, therefore it should still hold its value as long as you can wait. Now GO DO IT and show us the pics 😈

Hey b'cers, So I am suffering a bit of GAS for a five string and wondered if I could get some advice. I really like to Warwick corvette standard 5, but I picked up a RockBass 5 today and it was a bit meh. I'm not talking about sound or build quality, just the proportions and feel didn't wow me. I am hoping someone will jump and say the warwick WILL feel far more superior but thought I'd ask the question, so id love to hear your thoughts. Cheers.
