Whats the hardest bassline you've ever played?
FJ1200 replied to rodneymullen's topic in General Discussion
I find just about ANYTHING difficult these days. Having not played properly in - oh - a couple of decades - it's taking me a lot of time and a LOT of frustration! But I'm gettin' there... -
exellent!
Shame they've stopped producing them. A decent shape would help though. Has anyone got one? If so - do you use it on it's own or with a POD?

Old University joke from when we had proper currency... What's green and can be drunk in one night? Answer: A Student Grant Agree with EMA - my daughter seems to think that she'll get it but unfortunately for her my wife and I both work, and to make matters worse we think she should get a job! It's tough when you're nearly 15, know everything about everything and your ignorant parents can't see it. I remember it so well.....

are there any cheap retro / vintage looking basses?
FJ1200 replied to wengus's topic in Bass Guitars
Danelectro? Can't get much more retro than them. They've re-issued one of their classics... http://www.danelectro.com/bass_ls_aqua.html - someone posted a YouTube review a couple of weeks ago - the tone is gorgeous. (I have the Honeytone headphone amp - the echo is VERY 1950's - sounds great with my acoustic bass) -
Yeah I agree..... as the song goes....'the first cut is the deepest'...... you'll not worry so much after the 3rd or 4th..... I don't trust anyone who has an immaculate instrument.... I don't see them as pro players!

I'll be ok then... mines got more dents knocks, dings and so on than I care to count and the laquer on the back has been worn off by my belt buckle.

Yup - Google for me, too in Feb of this year. Was looking for bass lessons and a good forum for advice and so forth, and this came up. Been here pretty much most days since.
There's nothing like a new bass being delivered, looks a bit of a mean one Rob
You just HAD to didn't you! HOW ON EARTH am I supposed to concentrate at work now? I'll be drooling over it all flippin' day!
I often wonder why bassists who don't think this is "real bass playing" actually bother doing it? Does it somehow make you a better bassist if you can play stuff that isn't "real bass"??
I get irritated over the Pick/Slap/Fingers/thumb debate and what is proper playing. I can't do slap and sometimes I use a pick. Does that mean I'm not playing properly? You can do stuff and get sounds with a pick that you can't any other way, same with fingers and slap. Surely playing is playing whether you use the above, your elbows, toes, nose, the cat or even a bow (I've seen a violin bow used a few times - sounded amazing). If it's good enough for Jimi... Surely it's about the sound you're after and how you feel most comfortable playing and what works for you? Just MHO anyway. Sorry - didn't mean to rant. BTW - seen WS several times and I preferred Neil Murray. And Colin is one of my favourite players - ever.

My Aria IGB40 is quite light. I have a lot of shoulder pain so it's about right. Mine's a passive P-J arrangement but the IGB range is quite extensive.

I've ALWAYS wanted a Mockingbird. Or the Bitch - but prefer the 'bird. Detest the Warlock and those sort of 'HM' shapes - they just look ugly to me. Sorry.
Really? I always found tuners on PODS on anything but Pro series were slightly slow to register. Nothing too annoying though.
Does have a slight delay but find I can tune much quicker with that than with my battery one.
I use IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) from good ol' Maplin. They call it Electronic Cleaning Solvent and it goes for about £10 per litre can. I use it to clean the URB strings in situ once a week.
I thought IPA was banned by the HSE. We used to use it where I was working years ago and had to change.

I use one all the time but if no tuner present I use 5th and 7th fret harmonics. I have a small LCD Yamaha tuner that my daughter keeps pinching, otherwise my Bass POD XTL has a superb tuner, very easy to use and mutes when in tuning mode. Takes but a matter of seconds to get it right. You can even change the frequency - came set at 435Hz out of the box. I checked up (ok - Gooled) on the pitch and it goes back beyond the 1950's and earlier regarding international arguments over what frequency A above middle C should be. I changed it to 440 and so far it's been spot on ever since. Britain wanted 452hz at one time. I don't care what we use - I just want to be in tune with everyone else. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitch_(music) for more info.

Had a bowl-backed CL Clarissa Bass for years. In 1986-ish whilst living in France I'd put it down on the sideboard to go and make some coffee, and as I turned round caught the strap. being a bowl-back it just rolled off the side - and I didn't catch it in time! Split the binding along the top, small crack in the top varnish, not nice. Was discussing with the good Doctor OTB last night about getting her fixed up. Action is very high so will be looking to get it lowered considerably at the same time. Maybe new pickup as well..... hmmmm..... new paint job..... hmmmmm ... ££££££££
Hi, I'm Stuart and I'm in Kent. Been playing bass (and singing) for over 20 years. I've only just stumbled across this forum and I've lurked for a week or so. It looks active and friendly here, so I'm looking forward to hanging around a bit.
Welcome to the nuthouse!
Aye, they have. It's weird, I was 17 then...SEVENTEEN!!!! or 16, can't remember
Photos in a cupboard currently buried behind a stack of laminate flooring packs! ...I feel a new thread coming on - photos of a bygone age of the megabands in concert (or similar drivel). Quo "End of the Road Tour", Selhurst Park - front row anyone? Closeup of Phil Lynott doing his stuff?

Remember how in the 80's cassettes were the new evil? People recorded albums to play in their cars or on the new Sony Walkman and the record industry cried out that it would die. But it didn't. Fat cats got fatter, made more money than ever. Then they tried putting a signal on the album that would render copying impossible but it didn't work. I don't know what the future is or - as has been said - if there is one. The internet has not so much moved the goalposts as changed the game beyond all recognition. I think they need a new business model as some bands are starting to realise and are starting to pioneer. Watching with interest.
Yes, it's all coming back now.....Gillan saying he knew each of us buggers by name..haha. Lesley West with Mountain...I think????? You HAVE to get those pics up...I too had a tape many moons ago, isn't it available on cd now, not sure??? I have very hazy memories of the guy with the flag
Wants to be on DVD!
Blackfoot & Mountain. Hmmm, Blackfoot tribute band, hmmm...
http://www.blackfootrocks.com - they're back! Do you remember the bloke that climbed onto the roof of the stage to wave a flag? What about the hints being given out months before on the Friday Rock Show (R1) that Purple were re-forming and then finally the announcement? I think Gillan was doing the show himself that night - used to stand in sometimes. Has his own rock show now.

(<hijack> Saw DP at the Return of the Knebworth Fayre in the 80's - what a gig that was! Slept in my mate's lime-green Marina and froze. Ian Gillan sitting on the stage saying "I know each of you buggers by name..", refered to the new album as "Perfect Street Rangers" - Started off with Highway Star with the DP logo spinning at the back in lasers... ahh - happy days! Also in attendance - The Scorpions, Meatloaf (with broken arm/leg), Blackfoot (what happened to them?), and loadsa great bands. I'll be forced to dig out the photos now... Radio 1 played the full concert a few weeks later - I have it on tape somewhere. </hijack>)
I'm afraid I have to be contrary and disagree with most of the suggestions put forward. These are songs with very strong basslines, but they're not defined by their basslines. Play any of the songs below to the average layman and they'll twig what the song is - I have tested these on my wife. Money - Pink Floyd - definitely. O'Jays - For the love of Money Fleetwood Mac - The Chain
Actually - he's right and kind of what I was alluding to - see the tracks I put forward - play Money to someone and they'll know it instantly. Or Another one bites the Dust, and so on. Some of the songs mentioned have strong bass lines, yes, but are they what people remember the song by? perhaps I should have been more explicit - sorry - sort of where the bass is the lead instrument if you like.
