1.
you really don't like the line 6 synths do you ? and i agree...they're terrible...if only magazine review were as straight talking !!! "i mean...what could you do with that ?" great stuff !
I always read users reviews before buying these sort of things, as manufacturers website reviews are a bit of a waste of time and mag reviewers often don't have to live with them day in, day out and live with the little 'features' you so often find, and I don't see the point in not being honest about what I think. Other opinions will undoubtedly differ, and I hope they do. I worked with some of them a little last night and maybe got somewhere - not sure where exactly, but an option to change or upload new effects from L6 would be nice or a add-on pack like the guitarists can get for their POD with additional effects? P'raps I'm just a boring old fart in a mid-life crisis? Some of the younger, experimental or pro element here may be able to shed some light on getting the best from these fx? Please, guys? Huh? I really WANT to like them, I just don't much. Still love me POD though, and I think for me and for what I wanted it for it does have a slight edge over the Korg.
  2. Next one uploaded last night - see the post #5 up top. Going to put them all up there to keep them together.
  3. Used to play Cornet and violin as a kid (still got it at home!). Was forced into classical music and had to be in the orchestra which I detested! If they'd taught me folk or something with a bit of life I'd still be playing but how many teenagers into Motorhead, Van Halen, Led Zep and Deep Purple wanted to learn Beethoven in the 70s? Seriously NOT cool! My eldest daughter (now 14) and I bought a blue Yamaha Pacifica between us a couple of years ago - partly to encourage her to continue learning the guitar and partly cos I wanted an electric and wanted to learn to play but never got round to it so it's hung forlornly on the wall for much of that time. I pick it up and fiddle with it every now and then but always come back to my bass. Would love to be able to play harmonica well, and would love to learn to play double bass.
  4.
Being a new Pod user myself, I'll would like to see some vids from the guys who know what they are doing with it.
What are you watching my vids for then? No - seriously, thanks for all the comments. I have 5 more to upload, will get them on this evening. Bit more to them, but I'm only using the standard presets. Perhaps we should have a pinned thread on these as so many people seem to have them? Then we'll have an area where where we can swap tips and so on without annoying everyone else. Will anyone with a good amount of experience be demoing a POD XT Live at the Bass bash? Hoping to get along but not sure whet I'm doing yet. I'm in Northampton fairly often with work and it's only 40 mins from Peterborough.

Sorry - my mistake. I'll get me coat then....

    Bass Floor Pod

Loads of people here have one. I'm doing what I hope is an objective comparrison of mine with the Korg AX3000B including some vids - see http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=15379 Includes my personal likes & dislikes. Others will have differing opinions but then I've only had mine 3 weeks. Loads of threads on here about them too.
  7.
Wouldn't judge it till you've heard it! Cannon A620 Powershot - mic picked up the lower tones fine! Just my comentary and playing that's a bit suspect. Working on them now.
EDIT: OK - first vid uploaded to YouTube - 1st one I did - POD XT Overview. I KNOW it's not very good, and I KNOW the comentary is naff, it's just to give an idea. Had to fend off the kids coming in while I was doing it too! My firstest ever upload to youtube! 5 more to upload but going to bed now, been a long day. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t3iHFUQwE00 What woud be good is those of you who have had a POD for ages and know how to use them proper like could do some instructional vids for those lesser mortals like meself who have just bought one. EDIT: 18/03/2007 > Uploaded two last night, one took ages only to have it rejected for being too long. Oh well - have to re-do it. This got uploaded though... This is the synth stuff. Spent a lot of time last night playing with the synth effects trying hard to understand them. Starting to get a grip on some, but still prefer the Korg's offerings. The POD has an issue (well it is to me) where as the signal decays on the Korg it tracks perfectly, whereas on the POD as a sustained note decays it reaches a threshold and drops so there's a sudden step down. Can anyone tell me if this is by design or just how it is? I doubt I'd use these in reality anyway but if they are there I want to know about them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7FWpldetl4 Okey Dokey boys and girls - finally got the 2 Korg vids uploaded!! Had to split the original one in 2: Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8M0I14RmhWE Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxqDxuMXCzs Be nice with the feedback. Don't mind if you say it's crap (I beat you to it anyway!) but it's my personal opinion. And it seems a lot of people agree with me. Line 6 seem to have no interest what so ever in developing the Bass POD XT Live (or any bass kit), the more people that get on their site and hassle them with feature requests the better. Also - wot about you lot who've had one for ages? How 'bout a tutorial or 3? :0) If ya don't like the videos, do one that's better!
  8.
Sounds interesting!
Wouldn't judge it till you've heard it! Cannon A620 Powershot - mic picked up the lower tones fine! Just my comentary and playing that's a bit suspect. Working on them now.
  9. What's in the box? This is my POD XT Live as is arrived on my desk at work on the Friday afternoon. I spent ages before I ordered it trying to find what came in the box and couldn't find any info anywhere. In the box you get - Bass POD XT Live, Owner's Manual, Power Supply and a USB lead. You have to download the software seperately but be warned you need an early version of Java to run it. I run Windows 2000 Pro at home and had no problems but my XP laptop doesn't like it. Going to try it on Linux when I get some more time and get the software and drivers downloaded.
  10. Started the review - see the Reviews section or follow the link below. Due to the size of the avi videos I need to resample them - 600MB is a bit big I think! Put some photos on though. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...t=0#entry158098
  11. Okey-dokey. Managed to get a video review done of these 2 together, but since some of the vids are around 650MB for a 5-minute avi I think I need to re-sample them! But I've put some photos below to help. They show the side view with the pedals at max. height, the 2 together from above and the rear panels of both together. I'll try to get the videos re-sampled and posted tomorrow or later this week. The views expressed are purely personal, and in some clips I have asked that if anyone who has more experience with the POD can do anything - anything at all - with the synth sounds (which are a total waste of space IMHO) please can you advise me? (Disclaimer: No animals, children, basses or electronics were harmed during the production of this review.)
  12.
What's the octaving like on the AX3000B? I've been exploring the octaving on various bits of kit I've got knocking about and the best so far by a long way is an el cheapo Zoom RFX-1000, beating the laggy Lexicon MPX-100 and the ghastly sounding and poorly tracking Digitech BP-200 into respective cocked hats.
I find sometimes on the POD it can drop out a bit on the lower registers but also has the Boss OC-2 modelled - 1 and 2 octaves down. The AX has a pitch shifter too though and can do 1 or 2 up as well which would be nice on the POD. I'll get the AX out of the box over the wekend if it hasn't been collected and do a side-by-side comparrison, maybe some short vids/audio as well. I like the octaver though. Always wanted one. The auto-wah is a bit stronger on the Korg too I think. de-fret is a bit naff though - I was disapointed anyway. The Zoom one is supposedly better. I'm starting to think maybe I need an AX3000B or the B2.1u as well as a POD - GAS attack comming on I think!!
  13.
No sh*t. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=14798&hl=janek
Based on that it would be argumentative, contradictory, often off topic - but very entertaining!
  14.
ahem http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/bass-balalaika-folk-...emZ270218307796
Ooooooohh - I'm sooo tempted to bid - but would be in sooooo much trouble!!!
  15. I'd tend to agree - the effects on the AX3000B are better, and easier to selct but I bought the POD to avoid having to lug the amp to church and to be able to plug directly into the PA and then model any amp/cab I want and rely on the foldback - although I did miss having the 15" speaker next to me! I tend to be fairly subtle when it comes to effects, and I also have a CS-2 that I use - had it since the 80's. The synth stuff is certainly more usable on the Korg - the POD stuff is - IMHO - plain rubbish and unusable, and I'd rather have a decent slow attack and a de-fret. Also never did understand why you need 5 distortions, 3 compressors, 4 choruses, etc. 2 of each max would be good enough, surely! But you'll never get the perfect balance of seperate fx in a multi anyway - it's a personal thing. I like my POD, but if I was offered a Korg cheap I'd jump at it.
  16.
EDIT: How long is a bass chat thread?
Same as a piece of string - twice as long as half it's length!

  18.
Mine IS a bass.... 'twas a late 80s Warwick Thumb and it virtually pulled the notes from my fingers. It was effortlessly easy to play and it just wouldn't let me play a duff note. Fantastic stuff and I'm still gassing for an 80's thumb over 18 years later.
I think it's the same for me - but a Streamer, Barbican Guitar Festival - mid/late 80's, absolutely stunning, and yes - felt the notes were being pulled from me too. (Also got to meet Mr J Entwhistle) And at the same show one of the Ashbory basses - VERY odd, but a great sound. Nearly bought one several times. Only about 78 ever made.
  19.
I had a sudden rush of courage yesterday evening and took my bass to the local Jazz jam night. I stuck to a walking bass line through "Straight, No Chaser", got lost a few times but got through it and had a very good time most of the time. First time ever in a jazz jam. First time ever playing bass in front of an audience. Not last time! Loved being part of the music, seeing the audience "getting it". Huge respect to the experienced players who make it look so easy. Huge thanks to York's Black Swan jazz jam players for encouraging me and being very kind about the whole thing
Well done!! And great to hear others encouraging you. First time is always scary, especially in front of an audience, even worse when there's other players there too. I love jamming with others but don't get chance to do it much these days.
  20.
Thanks for the info man, so overall you'd say the pod is better and worth the difference in price? theres a podxt here for sale on the forums for pretty cheap, thinkin bout getting that and then buying a cheap midi board after. Or would it be better to go with the live straight off do you think?
No idea about Midi - never used it. I've posted a feature request to Line 6 for the option to ditch some of the fx and replace them with others via a firmware update or utilising the USB port in some way but they haven't come back to me yet. I bought the POD as I'd had a bonus that I wasn't expecting come through, I was going for the Zoom B2.1u actually. Overall the build quality of the POD is better than the Korg, it's heavier - being made of a thicker gauge steel and the knobs at the back are metal, although the 2 knobs either side of the LCD on the POD are plastic and a bit weedy but generally gives the impression it's built to last. You've also got the software downloads with the POD that really help. The Korg pedal has a longer travel and therefore is a bit easier to accurately fine-tune your sound, especially with the LED display alongside it. The presets on the POD are a bit naff, but Ped recommended going through and checking out every combination of cabs and amps - which I'm still in the process of doing: some I love, some I really don't. I wrote a simple spreadsheet with amps down one side and cabs along the top and mark them out of 10 - it's on this forum somewhere as a pdf. As I said I'll try to get the comparison done over the weekend and post it in the Reviews section.
  21.
hey, has anyone here got a korg ax3000b? if so how are the preamp models on it? if they turn out ot be naff il get a line6 podxt, as this would be my main use but the korg is so much cheaper and has the expression pedal. cheers, Nick
Got one on loan but I bought a Pod XT Live instead 3 weeks ago. There's some things on it I really like - slow attack, one of the synth vcoder-type sounds, but I prefer the modelling in the Line 6 and there's certainly a lot more of them to choose from, and the knobs on the Korg don't look like they'd stand up to much, but I really like the led display rows next to the pedal so you can see exactly what setting it is on in the dark. And it has more pretty red lights. The POD has a USB port if thats important to you (is to me!). The pedal on the POD can be asigned as well, and there's a big expansion pedal board as well some here have got. I took photos of it as I got it out of the box and keep meaning to do a review - so may do that this weekend and a comparrison.
  22.
Credit where credit is due...it had Dave Brubeck on it ...Bilbo was a smidge right Joking aside, it has some huge artists on there, I've heard a few of the tracks but I'm no jazz expert. If you're into it...job done in my book!
Must have missed that one - my appologies.
  23. right - home now, its Classic Jaz - The Ultimate Collection. Doesn't have any of the artists you mentioned. See http://www.demonmusicgroup.co.uk/Product.aspx?ProductID=3151 Is it good?
  24.
It's no wonder jazz has such a bad name - these £2.99 compilations do so much harm for jazz its unreal. 4 cds for 3 quid? Let me guess: Louis Armstrong, Lionel Hampton, Teddy Wilson, Dave Brubeck, Peggy Lee - all on wax cylinders - am I right? Not necessarily bad artists but these reciordings are almost always obscure outtakes, early left overs, dodgy live cuts. - Its like judging all Sci-Fi on the basis of 'The Mouse On The Moon'. DESTROY IT!! DESTROY IT!! Buy a copy of 'Jazzwise' and look for something that takes your fancy!
It's Classic Jazz, traditional stuff. No idea what - I'm not a jazz fan but it's ok. Only listened to CD 3 so far. Mix of vocal, instrumental, slow, fast, medium, all sorts. I really don't like modern stuff - all seems a bit messy to me, but then I'm no expert. I'll let you know what's on it but it was more to get a feel of the genre rather than for the artists themselves and I'm not going to spend £12 on a CD I may only play once and decide I hate it. My wife loves Ella and Nina Simone and has loads of it and I like some of that. Does that help? Edit> Anyway, some of it is really nice to chill out to on the way home after a stressed day at work and then stuck in traffic on the A605 in the eternal roadworks and really helps me to wind down - I find that unexpected but very pleasant.
  25. Got bored reading every post after page 13 and jumped straight to the end. I wanted to pick up on some things others have said and stick my own oar in. It's a shame this seemed to degenerate into a slanging match. I'm a crap player and I know it even after 26 years - but that's 26 years of nearly no practice or discipline and sheer practised laziness. I now very much regret that and find it badly hinders what I want to play, so I've started - at 45 years old - taking lessons again. And the first thing Nick pointed out was to do with my technique and something I'm now working on (thanks Nick) and has made a difference. Someone on another site also said when reading music (or in my case - looking at the pretty dots in a somewhat bemused fashion) have your bass neck in the same sightline as the music and not - as I've always done - at 90 degrees to it. So I've dropped the height of my music stand a bit and the neck nicely goes over the top of it - all in one line of sight. Again - it's made a massive difference so I don't have my eyes off the music for more than a second, but something I've never thought of. A pro athlete practices for hours often on things nothing to do with their discipline. F1 drivers spend hours in the gym or on mountain bikes to keep all levels of fitness up. The army practice all kinds of scenarios - even pretty unthinkable ones - just so if it happens they know what to do. These people practice over and over doing the most mundane routines. Scales bore me rigid but I'm starting to look at them again. So that when I come to need them - as with the other disciplines here - I can do it almost without thinking about it. I have stiff joints in my fingers - on the left hand caused by a surface grinder accident many years ago, but I found that playing fast helps to loosen up my fingers so I can play slower stuff better but I only do it when I'm practising (or showing off to the kids/wife). (Who are usually very impressed). (Except my wife!). (Who knows NOTHING!!). I wish I could do 10 hours a day! If it's a chosen career and passion then all your energy surely must go into it - I'm in IT, so I go on courses and study stuff to be better at it. Must admit technical playing for the sake of it not always my cuppa (didn't 'get' the playing on the video either - I lasted about 30 seconds) - but neither is Jazz, and I've just bought a £2.99 4-CD set for the car to try to get my head round it and to try a different style than blues. I'm also trying slap for the same reason. I'm always open to learning new stuff but I think I'll always come back to simple blues and R'n'B (that's proper R'n'B - not the stuff they pass off for it in the charts these days!) Lets learn from each other and - as I've often heard/said - chew the meat and spit out the bones. Wouldn't it be a dull world if we were all the same, liked the same things, produced the same music, drove the same car/bike, had the same bass, etc. Be thankful for variety and creativity in whatever music it takes. In some parts of the world it's actively repressed. It takes people who push the boundaries, stretch the limits and go places we only dream of to show the rest of us what's possible. Without them much of what we in the 20th / 21st Century take for granted would not have been possible. And they got derided too..... I'll get off me soap-box now.
