1. Throw caution to the wind and get an XL2. You only live once - so best do it properly and accept no imitations. :-) CB
 2. This post cannot be displayed because it is in a forum which requires at least 1 post to view.
 3. A "go-to" bass. A bass with an alternative number of strings. A fretless bass. An easy-to-transport bass. A bass that has sentimental value. CB
 4.
I mean on the guitar, open G at the third fret, D with th shape around the second fret and open E or Emin
Ah okay. Thx. You had me a bit confused with all this guitar heresy. CB
 5.
Things like the G D E type progression on the guitar (3 2 0 on the neck) just jump out at you
Huh? CB
 6. I think the OP is referring to a metaphorical seal rather than a physical one. Anyways, there are 3 reasons this won't be an issue for my 74 jazz: 1) I've had it since new, so I know its providence 2) I'll never be selling it 3) It's Mocha - who the hell is likely to copy that if they were making a faker :-) I don't even unscrew the ashtrays. The last time the strings were removed was to adjust the truss rod. In 1974. :-) CB
 7.
........seeing pictures of basses disassembled in For Sale adverts.
I know what you mean. Whilst I appreciate the necessity to expose the various proof points, what goes though my mind are burred screw heads, wrongly torqued screws and stripped screw holes in the wood. Even when done carefully, the more that the same screw is unscrewed and rescrewed in an old instrument, the more worn and widened that the thread in the wood will become. CB
 8. Electronic Fags - a Pet Shop Boys tribute (no offence intended Neil and Chris) CB
 9. I did see a Smiths tribute band made up of three coloured guys and a coloured girl. Very good they were too. The Blacksmiths. CB
 10. It's not often I'm lost for words, but this video is way beyond good. Playing is top notch. Angle shots whilst playing are great and well timed. Costumes are great. Video production - including the setup/soundcheck timer - is very professional. VW looks great and adds an extra dimension (even though, due to being an ex splittie owner, I now hate the things with a passion). Well done. You deserve a lot of success. CB
 11. Mach number varies by the composition of the surrounding medium and also by local conditions, especially temperature and pressure. The Mach number can be used to determine if a flow can be treated as an incompressible flow. If M < 0.2–0.3 and the flow is (quasi) steady and isothermal, compressibility effects will be small and a simplified incompressible flow model can be used.[sup][1][/sup][sup][2][/sup] The Mach number is named after Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach, a designation proposed by aeronautical engineer Jakob Ackeret. OH MY HEAD HERTZ ...PUN INTENDED
Yep - exactly this. Mach 1 is always equal to the local speed of sound, regardless of whether it's at the bottom of the sea, or the top of Mt. Everest inside the case of a Wal Mark 1 bass. :-) CB
 12.
Man o man at Mach 1 that has to be the fastest bass on the planet.... ( speed of sound at sea level) Looks pretty cool too!!
<pedantic bump> The Mach number is the speed of the object divided by the LOCAL speed of sound. Whilst the speed of sound varies with temperature (and therefore altitude), Mach 1 is always simply the local speed of sound, so to qualify it with an absolute altitude as you have is inaccurate. </pedantic bump> :-) CB
 13. This. Bought new in 1974. Still have it :-) CB
 14.
Well A - C - E is 1st, 3rd, 5th of the Aeolian mode (relative minor) if you play the 1st, 3rd, 5th of a D Dorian D - F - G or a E Phrygian E - G - B you still have the flat 3rd so you have another two minor triads in the key of C. Rob
Ah okay - thought you were indicating that D minor was in some way more special in context of C major. CB PS: the triad of the Dorian mode on D is "D - F - A"...... get back to those pipes :-)
 15. In a list of threads, produced as the result of a search, there appears to be an issue with the 'go to last post' link on the right hand side of each thread. Very often it is not as recent as the last post link which is directly underneath the thread title. CB
 16.
thus the C Major and D Minor triads are related.
Given that C Major's relative minor is A Minor, and with D Minor being the relative minor of F Major, the above statement vexes me. CB
 17.
Ok, hands up, who has googled 'autodidact'? apart from me, that is.
I thought it was someone who fell naturally into the thespian trade due to growing up in that kind of family environment. CB
 18. A third reason is that, as per site URL, we are having a chat. CB
 19.
Can't remember the Clash tribute band's name, but the singer was Joe Strimmer.
If I was starting a tribute, I reckon I'd go for something like Clash Act. CB
 20.
Well, I thought whether to include him or not. To be honest I was struggling to think of any bassists that Joe public might know. and was scraping the barrel at that point. As someone mentioned, - No Mark King in the list, so let's take Wolstenholme out and put Mark King in ...... and add Suzi Quattro of course! And I totally agree with your comment on celebrity and talent, but in this "subthread" the discussion was about how many people have heard of Jaco (very few) rather than how good or influential he was.
I must remember to observe sub-threads on this forum - I always make the mistake of trying to revert to the OP. Suzi Quatro had crossed my mind when I was thinking about the celebrity vs ability issue :-) I prefer her songs and her image to her playing ability. Things aren't always as they seem though - I got introduced to Jaco in my early teens as a result of my non bass playing friends advising me (one day when we were playing cowboys and indians) "you're a bassist - you have to listen to Jaco Pastorius, he's the best bass player in the world*". *this was one of those "absolute truths" we used to enjoy as kids. CB
 21.
No I wasn't. Ask a cross section of joe public to name a bass player and I'm pretty sure he'd be way down the list after, for example, Paul McCartney, Sting, Phil Linnot, Chris Wolstenholme, and probably after John Entwhistle as well. Most people have never heard of him.
I've played bass for 39 years and had never heard of Chris Wolstenholme prior to this post. "Who's heard of who" may indicate a degree of celebrity, but doesn't say anything about bass playing ability. CB
 22. I'm struggling to see why public perception has got anything to do with prowess as a bass player. Some of the most gifted people in their field - be it medicine, science etc - and the ones who push the boundaries, accomplish a great deal, are names the average Joe hasn't heard of. CB
