1. Wow .........and I thought TAB was bad.
2. For what it's worth-I've just done 3 weeks worth of gigs which involved quite heavy reading, where as for the next few weeks everything will be learned by ear. I personally think that you should learn to read and develop a good/quick ear. However if you choose not to,that's fine-more work for me.
3. I just use a Boss LS-2 line selector. It allows you to switch channels and you can match the volumes of both instruments too. I normally use one if I'm doing a show that requires me to double on both.
4. Considering that you are in London,I'd have to say check out the Clifton EUB. I've played one for the last five years or so,and wouldn't consider anything else. Mo makes beautiful instruments that play and sound very similar to an acoustic-even good for arco playing. ......Plus,he's a great bloke.
5. I'm thinking about selling an immaculate late '80's Status S2- Classic, with case.I'm not sure of the woods, but it 's identical to the one on the Status website. No pics at the minute but I will try to get some up soon. I was thinking, somewhere in the region of £1100-or nearest offer.
6. Ayup Pete Fancy seeing you on here I was going to say something witty, but couldn't think of anything...............so i won't. Stoke Roscoe users Unite!!!!!! Later Paul
7. I don't let anyone use my rig. It cost me a lot of money, and I try to keep it in good condition. If you are playing a gig you should take your own gear. On the occasion I play in a multi band situation I always carry,at least, a combo and a DI box. I don't see any reason why someone would not take their own amp to a gig.
8. On Electric..... Marcus Miller - Great tone, great groove, great technique, great composer....The man!! Jaco Pastorius - Opened the door for everyone. Major influence and legend. Will Lee - The ultimate session player. On Acoustic..... Paul Chambers - Swung so hard with Miles and Coltrane. Ray Brown - Sweet tone, hard swinging, great intonation. Christian Mcbride - Like a modern Ray Brown with added funk. Special Mention to John Patitucci who's awesome on both electric and upright.
9. Why not take your gear out of the drummers car when you get dropped off at home? That way whoever is on the gig has to take their own rig.
10. I wouldn't leave any gear at the gig-too easy for things to go 'missing'. Surely if there's 12 of you travelling, someone should be willing to drive. It's more important that you know you are going to get home with all of your gear than for everyone to get seriously rat-arsed.
11.
Where? The schecter I played in Rythm house, and the Tobias was in academy of sound. I've not been up to hanley recently. Is there anywhere else? I know route 66 went bust.
I was refering to mine, hence the wink. Although I did get my Ibanez from Academy of Sound. Route 66 hasn't gone bust,it's just moved to a smaller shop across the road.
12.
I can confirm this. Met him at a music show once showcasing the excellent Markbass amps. He was rude arrogant and unfriendly. I bought a Markbass amp a year or so later in spite of the miserable fat basstard. I gather his music isn't great either. He strikes me as one of these musician's musicians whose "stardom" only exist in guitar magazines, on forums and on their own websites.
I met Jeff a couple of years ago,and he couldn't have been nicer. He was happy to talk and came across as being passionate about music without being arrogant. He then proceeded to play briliantly.
13.
The only other 6 string i've ever seen in stoke was a tobias, which I really didn't like.
There are at least another couple of 6 strings in Stoke I've got an Ibanez BTB 6 and a '91 Tobias Standard. The Ibanez is nice, with a wide but relatively slim neck,35" scale. It's a good quality, decently priced bass.I use it with a Roland V-bass. The Tobias is great. Tighter string spacing than the BTB,34"scale and has the asymetric neck profile,so it's really comfy to play. Really smooth sounding throughout the entire range, thanks to the Bartolini's.
14. Oh Ok. Nathan main basses were a '74 Fender Precision and a '79 Musicman Stingray. Although at times he also used a Fender Jazz,a B.C Rich, and Aria and Yamaha 5 strings.
15. Yep,Nate Watts plays an Alleva Coppola LG-5
16. I've gigged on double bass un-amplified.
17. I'm really happy with my main set up of a Roscoe LG-3005 through a Genz Benz Neo-Pak and Bergantino HS410. All my basses sound good through this amp,but the Roscoe reigns supreme. Having said that, there is always room for more gear.
18.
I don't doubt that he's right about most music schools being crap. I just think he's a dick. I mean just look at his trainers in the above pic.
So now, choice of footwear is more important than technical ability and musical knowledge? Well I never..........
19.
So is there actually anyone here who *doesn't* think Jeff Berlin is a cock-end?
I don't think he's a cock. I think he talks alot of sense.
20. I haven't been able to make the previous years, but I'll be there this time.
21. Bryan is an awesome player, and the nicest guy. For the guys who are unaware of him,Beller has played in Mike Keneally's band for years, but is probably best known for his time with Dweezil Zappa and Steve Vai. He's also a regular contributer to Bass Player magazine and has just been touring with Dethklok. His first solo album 'View' is fantastic-can't wait to hear 'Thanks in Advance'.
22. For theatre work,I usually use a Roland Cube 100 combo. It's small enough to take up little room and loud enough to be heard to be heard without overpowering the rest of the band.I then use the amp's DI output to send to front of house. Other items which may be useful are: Volume pedal-Handy for bringing the volume down for underscoring, cutting the signal during quiet moments and simulated bowing. DI box-Sometimes there isn't room for an amp. Picks-because you never know. Pencil-to mark any cues, cuts or changes. Eraser-to rub out you markings at the end of the run. Spares of everything-strings,cables,patch leads, batteries etc. Bottles of water also come in very handy.
23.
I though P bass split coil was humbucking...am I wrong?
The precision pick up was single coil until '57 I believe. For theatre work,I've always used either a Fender Jazz or Precision and never had a problem. It would also be worth investing in a Volume pedal for major volume changes or to just cut your signal during quiet moments.
24. The song 'David Bowie' by Phish has a great bassline too.
25.
also remember that some of the greatest musicains in the world couldn't/cant read or write a note of music!!
I respectfully disagree. The greatest musicians(with few exceptions) can/could read music.
