I'm going to give it a go and see what happens. To rule it out would be irrational wouldn't it? I don't understand why you wouldn't give it a go Doddy?
I don't need to give it a go. I have played many gigs where I can't look at the neck-due to either darkness or reading charts or whatever-and it's not a problem to me. I've spent long enough with the instrument that it becomes almost second nature anyway.

I don't think it's wrong to say that I wouldn't recommend it. As far as improving your ears goes... If you play enough normally you will develop the skill anyway.I don't think that doing it in the dark will make it happen any quicker. I've worked with a lot of great musicians and all of them use their eyes as well as their ears. It is necessary to look at the neck, especially if you are making big jumps.

I bought my first five string (Warwick Corvette) after I'd been playing about 3 years, and traded it for an Ibanez BTB six about 4 years later. So it wasn't a quick transition. I've now got a couple of six strings, but have been playing fives for the majority of the time. If you want a six,try one out first. You may find that the neck just isn't comfortable for you. Or, it may be just what you've always wanted.

The idea of playing in the dark has been floating around for a few years, but to be honest I would never recommend it. I don't see why you would limit one of your senses. I don't want the Stevie Wonder was blind argument, because I don't think it's relevant. If you spend enough time with your instrument you will get used to the positions on the neck naturally, and be able to look away from the neck. Let's be honest, everyone looks at the neck of their bass or guitar when they play.
which one is your singlecut mate?
It's the Singlecut Custom at the end of the 3rd row,and the first two of row 4. Although it's now refinished in red,and looks far sexier.

I wouldn't call him a full on jazz player-in fact,he refers to what he does as improvised music and not jazz. I think his 'voice' is as much influenced by pop music, and being a sideman,as it is jazz. I also wouldn't call him a bass god,but I can say that from sitting two feet away from him,he has got almost flawless technique, and ideas just seem to flow from him when he's improvising.

Them three tunes do have pretty simple changes, but I really like melodies of them. If you want to hear a more complex piece try 'Time Stands Still' from his album 'Mystery to Me'. It has a more complex set of changes. You probably still won't like it though
Instrumental music has to REALLY impress me, I'm all about great vocals! Si
Whereas,I prefer instrumental music.

We all know my opinion of Janek as a player-I take lessons off him whenever he is over and I have jammed with him on stage,so obviously I've got a more biased opinion, but I really do dig his music. That's what made me want to take lessons with him initially. I get what Silddx is saying, but I do think that Janek is a lot more melodic and compositionally sound than similar players like Hadrien Feraud or Tony Gray-they are great players but their albums are harder to listen to,I think. I think that Janek has a couple of tunes that have the potential to become modern 'standards'. Maybe,he isn't fully formed as a composed just yet,but he's definitely on the way.Live, him and his band have great energy and are just killing-I think, way better than on record. I'm a big Zappa fan (30+ albums),but do think that, although there is a lot of great music there, there is also quite a bit of fluff.I think that's the same for a lot of artists though, especially those as prolific as Zappa.

If we're talking about Zappa let's not forget Arthur Barrow kicking ass on the Joe's Garage album.

My Singlecut is on there too......before the refinish.
A lot of people inflate prices because they are desirable, I want one, they generally nice from what I seen, but honestly your money is better spent on a modern MIJ or CIJ fender, some crop up on the eBay with US hot rod pickups aswell.
I'm unsure about that.My main P-Bass is an '83 SQ Squier and to be honest it's the nicest Precision I've played. Are they worth paying that much money? That's up to you...but I'd rather have one of the older JV/SQ Squiers than a newer one. I've got 6 Fenders, and the Squier is probably the best one quality-wise.

It's been a really good year for me. It started off slow for a few weeks, but then it all kicked off and I've been busy all year, and they've all been pretty decent gigs in nice places-I haven't played any pub gigs this year.
If you want to hear some really beautiful but more challenging stuff in this kind of genre, try the latest Allan Holdsworth album with Pasqua, Wackerman and Haslip, recorded live, it's beuatiful and has so much attitude.
I've got the DVD of that and it's great, but very different than what Janek is doing. I love Haslips playing.
Nice one Faith. Great record and Jojo's playing is immense on this record as always. In keeping with the Janek theme, heres a video of Janek's recent appearance on Monika Lidke's upcoming record. Enjoy.
That's cool...I'd not seen it yet. I saw the album promo earlier....... The album's great.

I think that your best bet is just to practice more.I'd never recommend practicing blindfolded or whatever, just spend more time with the bass until the neck becomes second nature, and you don't need to look at it. Maybe you just aren't familiar enough with it for it to become your 'main' bass just yet.
re Sex on fire- Does anyone have trouble with the exact timing of where to hit the first pair of B's? Most bands including ours feck it up or just dodge it somehow.Once your away its a peice of cake I agree.
Nah.... the first guitar note is a pick up(anacrusis) on beat 4,followed by 4 bars. I thought the first bass note was C#?
