  1. According to YT wisdom, it would seem to be from week 45 of 1964.
  2. Nice one, I'll check that out.
  3. I'm a bit confused about the origins of an instrument. I bought a Harley Benton Beatbass for an Amy Winehouse band we're doing. The drummer mentioned having given an old Hofner bass to his mate as payment back in about 1971, saying that the bass was from the 60s. His mate still has the bass, so he brought it to the gig last night. It needs a little TLC, but sounds fine . The thing is, that on the headstock, it say Hofner and not Höfner. Is this some sort of a copy, or one of those once-in-a-lifetime finds? Thanks in advance for any insight from the BC hive-mind.
  4. So, after much hemming and hawing, I got these. I went for them rather than Hofner Violin Bass specific bass strings because. a.) they were a lighter gauge - I was warned about the tension being significantly lower compared to rounds, but I didn't realise how much lower. Anyway, they feel a bit light, but that's fine and presents me with the opportunity to practice playing with a lighter touch. and b.) They are described as "medium scale" and I wasn't sure about short scale being too short. Many thanks to @EssentialTension for his contribution,"Short-scale Hofner Violin and Club basses, and copies there of, often require medium scale strings to allow for the distance from floating bridge to trapeze tailpiece." Anyway, they're on and they're fine, but imagine if I had gone for short scale (see photo) The threads stop barely before the saddle.
  5. Last night, I went to see Sam Greenfield with his band. I didn’t really know who he was beforehand, a friend of mine had a spare ticket - very funky and tight as a crabs @rse. From Tower of Power section stuff to Jazz Fusiony (occasionally too much so for my taste) style. Boy can those guys play. Especially Mr. Greenfield himself. The excellent bass player, Zach Guise, bore a striking resemblance to Daniel Radcliffe playing weird Al Yankovic.
  6. I placed another order with Thomann this week and exactly the same thing with DHL has happened - the same standard email "Unfortunately it was not possible to deliver the shipment today. Possible reasons: termination of the delivery tour due to illness, accident, exceeding working hours. We will try the next working day." Let's see how long it takes before I hear from them. Again, this is no reflection on Thomann, it's those f@ckers at DHL.
  7. That's a bit scary, isn't it? I mean it's not the end of the world, but then it kind of is when you're in that moment.
  8. This... I'm in Germany and had an order disappear for a few days. I called Thomann - the guy was super helpful and said that all he could do was make a complaint with DHL. Once Tomann have handed it over to DHL, other than registering a complaint, they have no influence over matters. He said that he would register the complaint, and that if I hadn't received anything within 2-3 days, Thomann would ship it again. DHL are.... well, DHL... die hard losers, perhaps?
  9. A more cynical person might suggest that the equipment failure was a condom, but I couldn’t possibly say…. For the sake of full transparency, I have two kids.
  10. Anyone who watched the Muhammad Ali documentary "When We Were Kings" and, like me, was both knocked out and frustrated at the brief glimpses of the concert which happened in Zaire during the days prior to the Rumble in the Jungle, should take a look at this. I haven't watched it all yet, but there seems to be more of the behind the scenes stuff than the actual concert, but interesting, nontheless.
  11. I highly recommend Genghis Blues to anyone who will listen. Filmed on a shoestring budget by an excellent band of nutters, who took blind blues singer Paul Pena to Tuva (northern border of Mongolia) to take part in a festival of their music. I don't know which I enjoyed more, the incredible collision of music styles or the friendship that blossoms between the two main guys. Very moving indeed. At present you can see it for free on YouTube.
  12. Oh I do love a clear, concise answer.
  13. Ditto here, if I was in the UK, I’d have this.
  14. Hi All, I have a Boss RC-3 which I use to play pre-saved loops. I start the loops using the footswitch on the pedal and I have one FS 5U which I use to stop them. I would like to attach a second FS 5U to step through the loops. Would the correct connecting cable be a simple TRS Y cable? The set -up as I want to use it, is visible in this pdf. I'm just not sure if the right cable is a TRS Y cable. Boss RC-3 cabling .pdf
  15. I was too cheap to pay for the proper fret finders, so used these. https://amzn.eu/d/c1aMocD They are a bit on the chunky side and give the bass a bit of a Playschool/Telly-Tubbies feel. I‘ve just noticed that Fret Finders aren’t even that much more expensive 🤦 I would recommend painting over them with nail-varnish
  16. Will SOMEbody please buy this bass and put me out of my GAS misery!
  17. I read an interview with Wendy from Wendy and Lisa. She quoted Prince regarding going for it on stage, “Remember, it’s only a mistake if you stop.”
  18. Thanks so much to all of you. You really have gone out of your way to be super thorough, and I’m very grateful for all your help.
  19. Ooh, you have a point there. See pic…
  20. There does appear to be conflicting information on the Thomann site regarding scale length. Both on the strings and on the bass (a Harley Benton Beatbass). However, as I said, I live in Germany, which after import duty etc. makes buying from Bass Direct a bit of a non-starter.
  21. I‘m so relieved to hear someone else say that. I thought maybe I was just too dumb. The number of times I‘ve “stolpert” around in there wondering why I can’t find stuff. Thanks again for your efforts.
  22. @Hellzero Aaah, they DO have short scale. I‘d only found medium at Thomann until now. Thanks.
  23. Thanks gjones, I did take a look at them. I think I‘m going for the LaBella Deep Talkin Black Tapewound for medium scale. They don’t seem to offer a short scale per se.
