I remember the drummer on his solo album singing the wonderful 'Boat Gig' - a crackin' song

Hi All, The pedal is in almost perfect condition and shows only minimal signs of wear. I would prefer to post to folks inside the EU. I recently bought a pedal from blighty and got hit for almost 30% duty plus DHL charges extra. Anyone in the Berlin area is welcome to come by and try out the pedal. I have an amp here at home and lots of bass...there might even be biscuits... EBS say “The EBS BassIQ produces sounds ranging from classic auto-wah effects to spatial “Funkadelic” and synth bass tones. It’s designed for anyone looking for a fun, fat-sounding, responsive envelope filter that responds musically to the way you play.”

Onstage with Prince you might have gotten away with it. Playing Mustang Sally at the Dock and Duck, less so.

You know the drill Daryl, what happens in the barn, stays in the barn.

It looks like you're right. The bridge is made of wood, but doesn't have the white stripes on it. The change must have happened ages ago though, because the bass has just been standing in the corner of my mate's living-room since about 1971. Also, there is a support wire connecting it to the scratchplate which is aged and rusted and appears to be original. @hofner experts, were there occasional basses built with stripeless bridges??

Thank you for the kind comment. I did just quickly photograph it from the end of the bed, so it’s probably just the perspective.

I must confess, I hadn’t noticed. I‘ll take a closer look when I get the chance.

Thanks for the tip 👍

It sounds like you're being very modest there ( typical bass-player) I'm sure your duo partner would say the same thing about you. The lead sheets would be a great support with some of those odd bass movements favoured by Fagen and Becker and, as you say, you'd definitely need help with the lyrics in general. Now I think about it, that sounds like it could be a lot of fun.

Wow, Steely Dan as a request? That’s fairly tricky harmonically to play spontaneously, it’s not exactly Mustang Sally. Do you provide a list to choose from or just jam whatever people ask for?
-
I wish I could say that.

Now that is just ice-cold, there’s simply no call for that.

My best buddy is a trumpet player (now there’s a sentence you don’t hear every day) from Rochester, N.Y. - as he puts it, “Those looks we would have occasionally gotten back in the day have been replaced by benevolent ones.” 🤣
-
That is exactly my thought process at about 9 pm before a late gig.

I don’t intend to open this up to find out. I’m way too cautious for that, but I do need to have someone take a look at the electronics. The bass works, but there’s dropout when I move the switches. I guess you’d have to open up the body to see inside. My knees go to jelly just at the thought.

Our drummer is turning 70 in a couple of weeks. He still plays great, in fact he’s my favourite drummer by a country mile, but after a gig he looks truly exhausted. That thing with the youngsters behind the bar resonates. It makes me smile, but I’m a spritely 58. Let’s see how funny I find it when I’m 70. I still love playing, which is a good thing considering the state of my pension 😱

Oh, I hear you. We have a club gig we do about once a month. First set starts at 10:30 and we‘re usually done around 01:15. I used to look forward to it, back in the mid-90s - the club was full and they’re all there to dance. But now, around 9:00 I start thinking, “Oh man, really?”. Once we get on stage, it’s fine, but that mid-evening hump? I guess I’m not 30 anymore, huh?

According to YT wisdom, it would seem to be from week 45 of 1964.

Nice one, I'll check that out.

I'm a bit confused about the origins of an instrument. I bought a Harley Benton Beatbass for an Amy Winehouse band we're doing. The drummer mentioned having given an old Hofner bass to his mate as payment back in about 1971, saying that the bass was from the 60s. His mate still has the bass, so he brought it to the gig last night. It needs a little TLC, but sounds fine . The thing is, that on the headstock, it say Hofner and not Höfner. Is this some sort of a copy, or one of those once-in-a-lifetime finds? Thanks in advance for any insight from the BC hive-mind.

So, after much hemming and hawing, I got these. I went for them rather than Hofner Violin Bass specific bass strings because. a.) they were a lighter gauge - I was warned about the tension being significantly lower compared to rounds, but I didn't realise how much lower. Anyway, they feel a bit light, but that's fine and presents me with the opportunity to practice playing with a lighter touch. and b.) They are described as "medium scale" and I wasn't sure about short scale being too short. Many thanks to @EssentialTension for his contribution,"Short-scale Hofner Violin and Club basses, and copies there of, often require medium scale strings to allow for the distance from floating bridge to trapeze tailpiece." Anyway, they're on and they're fine, but imagine if I had gone for short scale (see photo) The threads stop barely before the saddle.

Last night, I went to see Sam Greenfield with his band. I didn’t really know who he was beforehand, a friend of mine had a spare ticket - very funky and tight as a crabs @rse. From Tower of Power section stuff to Jazz Fusiony (occasionally too much so for my taste) style. Boy can those guys play. Especially Mr. Greenfield himself. The excellent bass player, Zach Guise, bore a striking resemblance to Daniel Radcliffe playing weird Al Yankovic.

Anyone bought from Thomann recently? Experience?
SICbass replied to Twigman's topic in General Discussion
I placed another order with Thomann this week and exactly the same thing with DHL has happened - the same standard email "Unfortunately it was not possible to deliver the shipment today. Possible reasons: termination of the delivery tour due to illness, accident, exceeding working hours. We will try the next working day." Let's see how long it takes before I hear from them. Again, this is no reflection on Thomann, it's those f@ckers at DHL. -
Equipment failures - always the worst time!
SICbass replied to Jakester's topic in General Discussion
That's a bit scary, isn't it? I mean it's not the end of the world, but then it kind of is when you're in that moment.
