1. I have a MarkBass CMD102P and I'm wanting to put a 1x15" cab to go underneath it. So basically my question is, which 15" should I get? I'd prefer to keep the entire rig MarkBass, so that (as far as I can tell) means it'll either be a Traveller 151P or the Standard 151HR. From what I can tell, basically the 151P is lighter and cheaper. I've no experience of either, so any advice would be most welcome! Also, is there is another option, i.e using a non-MarkBass cab?
2.
Thanks Pedro - I'm moist about it myself TBH, especially KOL stuff. They're my fav band at the moment.
Slighty OT but what KOL stuff are you doing?? We're doing a couple of KOL tracks and they sound much better when using a pick, On Call for example. EDIT: When doing KOL, it is the law that you mimic Jareds odd facial movements...
3. Nice one!!!!! You cocked it up though! You're meant to replace Golf Clubs for Jazz Bass, quick, edit it!!!
4. I struggle with buying basses due to being lefty - so generally, I've bought online. However, given how this thread has gone, I'll defo check out the Bass Gallery next time I am down in that there London. AM, I think your experience with the Gallery is more akin to the general experience from what I have heard, I think the exchange between MacDaddy and Alex goes to prove this further! I think its terrific that Alex obviously cares enough to come on here and sort out/correct whatever happened - and obviously to MacDaddy's satisfaction as he was more than happy to edit his original post (which I missed). Personally, I'm not bothered what actually happened, it would be the efforts to correct the situation I care about. Too many retailers simply don't give a flying toss. For example: Solo Music in Stapleford, Notts. Arrogant w*nkers, went to buy a tambourine for our vocalist and some strings for me, and got the piss royally taken out of me - I'm sorry, but it is unacceptable.
5.
EDIT - I forgot to ask, can you get the same basses as left handers that you can as right handers????
I'm left handed and play left handed bass. You will severely limit your options if you choose to go forward and play a left handed bass – there is simply not the demand for them – I think I’ve seen one lefty bass in a shop. A fellow BC'er pointed me to this: http://www.leftybass.com might be useful. Despite this, you do look far more cool with a left-handed bass.
6. I seem to remember a thread on BC not so long back about trying to match up compatible bands in different areas, so for example if you were London based and had 100 regulars, you could 'trade' gigs with, say, a band from Scunthorpe who also had 100 or so followers thus getting you out there. Maybe this should be investigated further??? Oh, we have 21 fans on Facebook (all family) and do 8 covers anyone also this bad looking for a 'trade'????
7. Ped, many thanks for the reply, I'll give it a bash in a sec. Had a right nightmare with it last night, found if I set the buffer really low, the whole thing just died. I love this stuff, and I work in IT!! right, I need to retrieve the POD from the end of the garden and repair the window!
8. Guys, Needs some help with something I have 0% experience of. I recently purchased a Line 6 BASS Pod XT Live from a fellow BC'er and very, very happy with it. Anyway, after chatting with my tutor and stuff, I decided it might be an idea to start recording myself as part of my practise regime. So, I've got a copy of Tracktion 3 and USB'd the Line 6 to my Laptop (It's a HP NC8430 Dual Core Jobby with 1GB RAM). Within Tracktion I have the Wave device set as ASIO Bass PODxt Live as both Output 1+2 and Input 1 and Input 2. So, I can load in an MP3 to jam along too fine and I can then record myself over the top. However, I seem to be getting issues with Latency, which is set to 46.4 milliseconds. As when I play back it seems "out", now, this could of course be due to the fact that I'm actually "out" and the software is fine. Which is cool, I can work on that, but I need to be sure the setup I've got is correct. Is there a better way of doing this or some alternative software I should consider? I like traction is its fairly straightforward. I'm not interested in producing top notch edits or anything, just want a simple method for reviewing my practise. I'm a little out of my depth - so go easy!! Many thanks, John
9. Good work on this BB, there is no doubt the Grovesnor is the perfect location for this. Anyway, I'm Sandiacre/Stapleford based so if anyone needs a lift I'll see what I can do. Mail me if you're interested. HOWEVER, if Mrs Moodys dad allows me to bring his Orange and I bring my Mark Bass then we might be struggling for room in the Mini. Any Leftys planning on going??? I'm gassing for a new Bass at the moment and really want to try a few out...
10. This is really interesting and defo some techniques I'm going to try out. To the OP, I have *exactly* the same issue. So much to learn, where the hell do you start? OK, so I have 1st proper gig, 40 min set, coming up so primary focus is nailing that... I have lessons once a fortnight, for the moment, they are focused on getting me ready for the gig. When you practice, when you sit down and say "right, here we go", what do you all do? Connect Amp to Line 6 POD, Connect Line 6 POD to Laptop, fire up Traction to record what I play. I then tune up. I try by ear, fail, then get out the tuner. Do you go through variations of the same thing, or do something radically different each day? I have the songs I am learning in order from Very Confident, Confident, No Hope. I run through every song that I am very confident on to warm up, possibly through a couple of runs I've been learning outside of band stuff. I'll review my Very Confident stuff to ensure I'm still Very Confident with it. And move on. I always play along to the MP3s or a very dody band CD. Do you practice all scales every day, or concentrate on arpeggios one day, modes the next, 2 & 3 octave scales on another? I don't do any of this at the moment. My time is limited and I don't have hours in the day to pick this stuff up just yet. It's on the list for the New Year. When you warm up and / or do dexterity exercises, do you always do the same ones or look for new ones each time? Generally stick to the same thing. I'm concentrating on my left hand at the moment (LEFTY ALERT!!), as I have a really hard attack that needs softening. We have a song that covers all the strings and is straight 8 note runs so it is ideal for this. Do you stick to one genre of music in one session or vary it? I generally stick to the genre of our band, which is erm, varied. I learn (to a degree), a Herbie Hancock track the other week, just cause I like it, and also Lady (Hear Me Tonight), just cause I like it. How do you stay disciplined? My problem is concentration. I am easily disctracted. Right now, I'm typign this when I know on my work laptop a simple file copy is required!! Do you work towards specific goals, either long term or short term? (be it mastering a rather tricky piece, or a technique or your own goals) Yeah get through my gig without looking like a total c0ck. After that I intend to evaluate exactly what kind of Bass Player I want to be then be it. Do you dismiss things you've tried several times, but haven't nailed (for me it'd be up-down thumb slapping and playing Jaco's chromatic fantasy to speed), or do you refuse to be beaten and spend lots of time on it? Yes, constantly. I've ditched so many songs because they are too hard at the moment. Do you dismiss things as not being relevant, either not for you or bass playing in general? No never, there are far better players out there than me. Some talk my language and I listen to them. Where do you source new ideas of things to work on? - obviously working or playing in a band will always have an input on this as the setlist always increases. BC obviously. Mewsie likes to kick my arse now and again. My Bass Tutor is awesome at making me look at things differently. Most of the time though, it is the band, although I have little input into the songs we are playing. How much percentage of your time do you spend on theory or do you only know what you need to know? I don't think it is a specific percentage, but I think it is important to mix the theory into the practise anyway. erk!
11. I'd go for the Grovesnor again - awesome venue and a steal. I'll bring the Mark Bass, Line 6 Floor POD, I'll also have a word with the Girlfriend and possiblly bring her Dad's Orange, Mesa Boogie or Trace Elliot (god I love that girl!!!) Feb is good. So long as it's not cold Still very much alive, working flat out trying to learn 8 bloody songs for Dec 20th before I die on my arse! John
12. Just do what I do during practise when I forget my bit; "Dum Dum Dum Dum" in to the mic!
13.
Not for many years. Nice Horace avatar Moody
Slightly OT but thanks!! I have mewsie to thank for it!! Not sure the rest of the band are 100% happy with having a lefty Bass player as the main logo, esp our Guitard, but *meh*, that's when I put my foot down
14. Band practise two weeks ago, played our entire set of 9 songs without one mistake, was a pleased as punch, then almost repeated the feat the week after (balls to that f**ing KT Tunstall!).... COME ON THE 20TH DECEMBER (first gig)!!!!!!
15. I agree. (Are there any girls on this list?)
16. Hi, I can recomend Scott at Music Learning Curve in Hockley, http://www.mlc-academy.com/ or 0115 941 7493 I've been learning with him for aroud 6 months and he is very, very good!
17.
You just have to do this, how can you resist that bassline?
That is stunning! Gonna take this one to practise I think and see what the guys think. Took a crap version of My Chemical Romance doing All I Want For Christmas to practise last night, I think it's a good starting point, but I reckon we could change quite a bit, for a start we have Female vocals, and she can "slut" it up quite a bit. Some awesome suggestions here I'll defo look into, many thanks, honestly thought I'd be in for a pasting creating such a thread in October!!! Many thanks all!!
18. This might seem a bit odd on in the middle of October, but I need to get practising! We've officially been booked for our debut gig which will be a Christmas Party at a pub in Nottingham on 20th December. We'll be supporting a local covers band. Most of the stuff we do is nineties rock covers (Feeder, QOTSA, Pink etc). Anyway, we've been asked to do a Christmas song as an encore. We're thinking something a bit cheesy and not too serious. Any suggestions would be more than welcome! We have ruled out our drummers suggestion of “Wombling Merry Christmas”...
19.
Completely off topic but that's on my birthday! Woot! And in response no I'm not going... sorry
Wow! It's the day after mine!!! Happy birthday for the 9th birthday neighbour! I will be going, with any luck...
20.
The next chunk of edam on our to-do list is "Disco Inferno" apparently...
That my friend is a quality idea!!!! That would be awesome!
21. It is mate, I promise, just had it on over and over all day - awesome! Cracking set as well on R1!
22. Listening to it right now... It's awesome! If you get chance defo go see them live, I've seen them 4 times now and will do again in December - On Call and Knocked Up will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up when played live.
23. I went to one of Steve Lawson's solo bass nights in London a while back - it was awesome, my fav moment being when Steve asked the audience "Who plays Bass then?" litterally the entire audience put their hands up! That night I saw Yolanda Charles. Well worth a YouTube/Google - simply sublime!
24.
Yo guys, after being excited about bass for months, and finally getting my bass and being absolutely rubbish, and the whole thing being really disheartening i think i desperately need a proper lesson, or at least some face to face tuition, or just some face to face advice. I knew i was not so good, but a mate came over (a guitar player) and started playing the crap out of my bass for fun and that sent my confidence rock bottom, and ive been neglecting this place in the process, and i just feel really bad and low about everything bass related.
Dude, I think any newbie goes through this - I'm fairly new as well, and I get times when I can't put the thing down, and times when it's like "oh sod it!". I think it's natural. The fact you've made this post means you obvisouly give a crap. Try not to be too hard on yourself. I would defo go for lessons, I go once a week for an hour, well worth the investment. Oh, and get in a band with a good looking girly lead singer - helped me no end, but thats a different matter!
25. Interesting thread this! We do a main rehearsal on a Saturday 11 - 1, this used to be at NCN in Nottingham as it is really cheap and fully kitted out. However, we've recently sacked the drummer (apparently thought that getting her lady garden trimmed was more important than band practise!), so we've moved into my kitchen till we find a full time replacement. My guitarist and I often get together to just go through problem stuff, this can be for an hour or all day, I really enjoy this as we totally geek out! And because it is at my place, it is really nice and relaxed. We also socialise quite a bit, a couple of beers on a Sunday for a laugh, going to see local cover bands (future competition we hope) and stuff, that side is very important to me and essential for getting that “bond”.
