1. Colleagues, I've been chatting this morning with the dear Mrs Moody - she works in Performing Arts at New College Nottingham (the old Clarendon College) - We can use one of their performance spaces on Saturday 4th May (tbc - system was down) from 11:30 till 3:30pm (the college shuts at 4 on a Saturday), sadly we could not go beyond 4pm as we'd need to pay for college security. There's ample parking etc. There is a small cost involved so I'd suggest donations on the door. The space will hold 80 people in the audience and there is a stage area etc. I'm going to have a gander after work today to see what it is like, I'll try and get a couple of photos and post. It is a proper music performance space. Sadly my initial suggestion of my local won't be able to happen - so no beer unfortunatly, although there is The Grovesnor up the road for after bashing drinking. So, I'll throw this out there to see what everyone thinks.
2. Excellent day out, throughly enjoyed it. Woot! to my raffle win!!!
There is a plan for a bash somewhere Nottinghamish sometime, I will check and let you know. Steve
Steve, Mrs Moody has been given a task of seeing if we can use a room at NCN, she's calling me later on today.
3. OK, this is my problem, obviously I'm fairly new to playing Bass so for me, practising is key. But this week I've really struggled with it. My conditions are not ideal. I work away from home during the week so 90% of my practise is done in a hotel room (stealthplug into laptop and some funky headphones). I've booked some time of work so I can give myself a royal kick in the backside and get moving - however, in a week or so, I'll be back in the hotel again. What I've really struggled with this week is getting in the right frame of mind to practise, esp after a crappy day at work, and what I have done feels like it has been a waste of time to be honest. So, do I come up with a plan of what I'm going to do that night? Or let things be more organic? Scented candles? I’m a little apprehensive about a plan – it feels too much like going to the gym. Or am I missing the great big pink elephant in the corner?
4.
Maybe we should have a separate bass bash forum where people can keep track. With three bashes planned, two confirmed, people might get confused!
Ped, sounds like an excellent idea, I think theres quite a lot of scope for regional get togethers along with the big one as well, which btw, I really can't wait for!!! Although I am sick and tired of the wife walking around the house going "There was this one time, at band camp.." WAGS - honestly ;-)
5. Good point. What date do we want then? I'll take some pictures of the venue I mentioned tomorrow, just to give everyone an idea of size, we'll then decide it was a rubbish idea and find somewhere bigger! My other idea was to break into Rock City. Guerrilla Bass Bash!
6. Fellow Nottingham Bass Players, After my introduction on the 'chat, there seemed to be an idea of kicking off a Nottingham Bass Meet. I completely missed the thread so apologies. Anyway, I think this is a corking idea and think we should make it happen. I suppose the first thing is a venue, probably the best idea would be a 'proper' studio/meeting room place, but that is going to cost $$$ (unless someone has some friends). Now, my local pub has a restraunt upstairs that is unused, it would be free and we'd get food at half time, there is also beer downstairs ;-) Now, it's not massive, and it is in Sandiacre. It's were we do band practise on a Sunday, so it has an old PA etc (and my massive 25w practise amp!) already set up. And we can have a game of darts, poker or dominos afterwards! So, any takers?
7.
Ah bums, missed it! Sorry Steve! Would have loved to see Yolanda again, we had her on Bass Day 2006. She's wikkid!
Oh yeah, she was just incredible my gob was on the floor!
8.
I'm also a lefty in Nottingham, can anyone tell me of any bass tutors round here, I cant find any in the tutor forum.
Thomas, sorry for the delay, just sent you a PM. Also, yeah, lets get a Notts meet together. OK, venue?
9. Bernadette - The Four Tops, probably a bit predictable, but thats one I aspire too...
10. Cool! loads of people going then!!! I will be wearing my brown bass hat and a pink carnation, well probably not the pink carnation!!! Best go get me train!
11. Just a thought, what time is kick off and what time is it expected to finish? [EDIT] Ah yes... 8pm, finishes at 11pm [/EDIT]
12. Looks like I'm down in that there London tonight so I think I'll take a wander down!
13. @niceguyhomer @tauzero @OldGit Indeed, we were walking around the Red Lion in Sandiacre like we'd just played Wembley or something! I think the biggest thing it will do it spur us all on, personally, I'm the least experienced but it sure has motivated me to concentrate more!
14. Ever since I've joined BassChat I've looked upon this thread with envy, thinking to myself "one day, dam it, I will contribute!!!" And so.... We had our first ever gig on Saturday night in our local, they have a real good band who play 1st Saturday of the month and their Bass Player has been helping us out loads with Sunday practise sessions, so a couple of weeks ago he suggested we did a couple of songs in-between their 1st and 2nd sets, just to get use to the idea of being on stage. Now, only one of us, luckily our v. talented vocalist, has ever done anything remotely resembling public performance. The guitarist and I have never done it, in fact prior to Saturday night, the only thing I've ever done was be a sunflower in the school play (and I'm now 30). We rattled through Bohemian Like You and Chasing Cars. I think we did OK, we agreed on a good 6 out of 10 and judging by the applause we got, they didn’t hear the mistakes ;-). However as a first time ever performance, what a feeling! I totally get why you guys get a buzz out of playing. Awesome!

BASS BASH MARCH 2008
May be a bit late to ask but is anyone going from Nottingham? Or Nottingham locale? I'd like to come but would need a lift to do so. So if anyone is feeling generous and has space for one + one bass that'd be much appreciated! Mark
Just sent you a PM! I will be going, I will be bringing along my Lefty Fender. I'll also bring along my laptop with StealthPlug/AmPeg if anyone is interested in giving it a go.
16. I've used sheetmusic.com - at 99p a song it's not bad, Amazon is as good as place as any for music books. On the highstreet HMV do an ok selection but I'm not too sure about Bass. As an alternative, if a PC is available then how about considering using Guitar Pro and then downloading the tab from the internet? For example if you google "Kings Of Leon Knocked UP Guitar Pro" you'll get a few hits, you can then download the full thing (Guitar, Bass and drums), load it in and bish bash bosh, away you go (subject to it not being tabbed by UglyKid69 from Texas and being completly wrong). I use this quite a bit - and the fact you can play along with it is quite useful.
17. I know the feeling. I've not been hear long, nor have I been playing for long, but I'm defo developing GAS...every now and again I look at my Jazz Bass and think it looks lonely, maybe it needs a new amp to keep it company, or perhaps a pedal or two, or maybe I want to fit some new pick-ups in it, or maybe a nice new case, I then have a cheeky look on ebay or though my John Entwistle Bass Collection book and think, "ahh no, it needs a friend" I mean, you'd never just buy one goldfish would you? That'd be cruel!
18. Thanks for the warm welcome guys. Yep, I'm defo thinking £150 was a steal. It's an immense machine. Sounds like a bash might be on the cards then!
19. Hello there from Nottingham, my Bass Tutor pointed me in the direction of the great Basschat, so as they say, here I am! I've been learning Bass since October last year, having moved over to the Deep Side after a debatable year learning the 6 string. Something just didn’t quite…connect. I’ve not looked back since picking up the Bass – studying was always an issue with the Guitar, however with the Bass, I barely put the thing down. So gear…. I play left handed and I was fortunate to pick up a Lefty Fender (Mexican) Jazz Bass for a reasonable £150 or so off of eBay, it plays really nice, and was hardly used by the previous owner – no scratches! Mrs M bought me a funky Fender Rumble 25 for my {cough} 30th {cough}. I work way during the week, so I’ve a StealthPlug that I use as well. I’ve likened the Bass to raising children – get as much info as possible then take the bits that work for you (?)!!! I suppose major problems at the minute are: timing, timing and timing, trying to run before I can walk, oh, and timing. Looking forward to contributing to what seems an awesome forum! John
