Welcome Neill. Good intro. But tell me something................... ..............have you ever killed a man?

I've never changed a bass string.

Won an electric guitar, bass, keyboard and drumkit on a game show as a kid. Played the guitar a bit, sold the bass (I think), gave the drum kit away, and eventually sold the guitar for £20 so I could go to the pub (I was 15 at that was a good evening out at the time!). When I was 17, decided I wanted to be in Oasis, so bought an accoustic guitar off a mates mum (still got it). Played off and on for a fe years - more off than on. Went to Uni. Took the guitar with me, didn't improve much. Never felt I really got into it. 2 years ago my missus was pestering me about what to get me for christmas. I'd been watching a really bad covers band on youtube and kept finding myself drawn to the bass. Did some research, seemed like a good hobby, so asked for a cheapo starter pack for christmas. Loved in instantly, suited me much better than a guitar (always felt to small). Last christmas got a serious bass, also improved amps etc. Auditioned for a band in March this year (thanks to Jakesbass), joined them. Recently bored an electric guitar and amp, mostly to help with songwriting and bass playing. Keen to get competent oin guitar but no interest in being good.

Guess what I played through last night
Just what I was going to say. Be a good project to post in the repairs section where the more technical bretheren hang out a lot - sure they'd help with the finer aspects of it.
With my training as a recruitment consultant, I should have no trouble with this little project. -
I like Bruce Springsteen's cover of Santa Claus is Coming to Town. You'd need a pretty tidy band to pull it off though.

I'm just too busy trying not to f*** up to even listen to the tone.
Why dont you buy a di box?
It's cheating. And I want to drill some holes. -
Stop causing trouble ped. Why do you have to bait people?

On the subject of wooden bridges, I quite like the idea. Kinda low-tech, but if it works, it works. I agree with ARGH's point about adjusting string height. I've had my bass set up once and that is how it will stay. If I got it back from the luthier after a set-up and the action wasn't right, I'd get him (or her) to re-do it. It's difficult to comment on these things without playing it though, so I may be talking out of my arse.* *but if I am, so are most of you!

I've got a Carlsbro Bass Bomber combo. I love it it. If only it had a D/I output socket, I'd be in heaven. Is there any way to fit a D/I socket or would it cost more than the amp? -
DOH! should have re-rread my post before I sent it!... Here's the link to their web site http://www.americanguitarsuk.com/ Click on Bass World and it's all there!
I know it well. Its all of 5 minutes walk from my house!

And expose all your noddlings and weedlings to the world... Are they ready...?? I know i am... Garry
If you don't mind I'm gonna run my songs by Chris Isaak before I post them anywhere else. I think he's due a comeback.

Played the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town. We were covering for a last minute cancellation and didn't know we were playing until Tuesday of last week. Wasn't a problem but meant we couldn't bring many people along. That, coupled with the fact that it was a Sunday night meant we only played to a handful of people. Was quite a laugh though as we could have a bit of banter with the other bands and sparse crowd. We collectively made more mistakes than ever before, but no one seemed to notice to much. We were also totally out of place seeing it was punk/metal night and we're a mod/britpop type band. You could see a lot of people wondering what the hell we were doing there. Didn't bother us though, was a good rehersal. Also played through an Ampeg SVT and Ashdown stack. Was as unimpressed as I am with all amps. My hearings srewed (and getting worse) so I can never hear myself anyway. I just kinda guess what and when I should be playing. Next gig is at the Water Rats where we'll be bringing many more fans* *friends/family who are polite enough to humour us.
Heh, maybe you should write an idiot's guide and put it in the wiki!
I would do, but I'm probably still doing it all wrong. I managed to record pretty much a whole song on saturday though (apart from vocals). It sounds like an early 90's Chris Isaak b-side demo. Which believe me, is no good thing.

This Ableton is pretty good! Its actually pretty simple.
Very kind of you Nick. I've just found this: http://www.ableton.com/r1/pages/tips/2004_...-guitartips.pdf I'm in a slightly better mood today and the above link makes sense to me. I've been playing around and think I get the principle. The only problem is when I select and drag drum loops etc, its plays but I can't here anything. Same thing happened when I tried to record my bass. Any idea what could be wrong anyone? I'm yet to get a sound out of this thing!
Think I've sussed the lack of volume problem! I'm like f***ing Moby!
Best bet might be to get something like the boss micro-br? If you do want a hand BBC I'd be happy to pop round sometime.
Very kind of you Nick.
Are there any basschatters near you that would be happy to pop over? Once its set up itll be a piece of cake mate, sounds like you just have an installation issue. Set up a fan to keep the red mist at bay
Nah, its bigger than installation issues! To give you an idea of how retarded I am, I pressed a button last night and the tool bar at the top of the screen dissappered. This meant I couldn't exit the program. I then tried every key on the keyboard to get it back, but this didn't work. So in order to close it, I had to switch my laptop off. I then switched it back on, and guess what? I'm still staring at that f***ing Ableton screen! At that point the whole thing nearly went out the window! There's just far too many options and buttons on the thing in general.
I dont want to burden you with any more sh*t... But..... I am not sure Audacity works with the Asio drivers on your Audio interface... The Asio drivers will work great with Ableton.. So might be worth grinding on with Ableton.. You can use the standard Windows drivers with Audacity... [ MME ] But you will play a note.... And not hear it until Sunday afternoon [ Latency ] There is a small work around though.. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=29042 As i said 4 pages ago... It might have been better to have spent your dosh more wisely.. Like In the Boozer.. Pick on some stranger just reading the Sun... And start banging on about Audio interfaces, Audacity, Asio drivers..... He will be impressed. Garry
So are there no normal people* out there who want to make music at home? *when I say normal, I mean people without a degree in Computer Science?
