1. I have to admit they are interesting. My plastic covered one in my avatar abouve eventually went on Ebay for around £80, well battered, cracked and with a pickup missing and other electrics. The neck was in good condition though but not full size. I think the length went into the thickness because it was as thick as a cricket bat. I suppose a collector or restorer bought it. Good luck with that, they look great restored. p.s found it at the tip for a tenner.
2. There was a few advertised earlier in the year on Ebay, maybe old stock. The BFM is a much better bet anyway.
3. Behringer 2500. Seriously how much power do you need though? Carlsboro and Peavey do a range of reasonably priced ones. Loads on Ebay from reputable dealers brand new.
4. The best thing you can do with any 2x10 cab is to build a BFM Omni 10 , take the speakers out and put them in the homemade cab. Its the only BFM design that you can use any bass speaker in.
5. Peavey do a 2x12 bass cab cheap, looks a bit like the BFM Omni10 which you would be much better off with weight wise and soundwise. But whatever floats your boat. I must admit I like the sound of a 12" bass speaker. Do not be put off by the Omni 10 being 10" speakers as the cab design makes them sound bigger. My choice by a mile, and you can use any bass speaker in them. Mind you the recommended ones only cost £80 a pair, £30 for wood, under a tenner for the plans, cab paint and fixings £25, job done and no upgrading needed.
6. All the Ashdowns are very average but do the job in most situations in my experience.
7. You also get the odd 32ohm used Trace Elliot 10" turning up on Ebay. You could get a friend with a multi meter to measure the resistance across the terminals of the speaker if it does not say on it.
8. There is nothing wrong with the heads in my humble opinion- its the speakers which are the problem, wooden (almost) crate with a speaker and hole, built to a budget, vanilla, missionary, cheap and nasty design-yes even the ABM range. Its our fault we do not demand better. If you buy a loose speaker and work out the optimum size cab using win programme, the reccomended cab size is usually the dimensions nearing a washing machine to make it work efficiently. I purchased a Mag115 in 2003 and when I looked inside it had a 150watt speaker in it instead of a 250 which is what it was rated at. Ashdown said that I could have a replacement speaker anytime in the future should it blow, it has not yet, at 8ohms it is obviously ok in the real world but you get my drift. Beware discount shops. So there, I am not wrong this time.
9.
I didn't realise we were voting anything.... A blind test would be pretty interesting. Putting it against an Ampeg 810 is a pretty bold statement but it would be nice to see what the outcome would be. G
Of course I am clueless and just making a brash statement in my abouve quote, but, anything that gets people thinking about why they are buying mass produced average to bad cabs is good by me. BFM thinks the T39 will outgun a 8x10, visit the site for his charts and view point. Mind you a pair of half decent P.A speakers will beat a 8x10 for output. Will not look cool though.
10.
Calling all Omni 10 and Omni 10.5 users: If the sound of these cabs is improved and they sound bigger, louder etc, have you had to change your amplification to go with the new sound? What amps (SS, Valve, big, small) do you find work best?
Hi, you dont have to change your amp with these cabs. These cabs are very efficient which means they make the best of any amp. Your normal cabs are usually very inefficient (a oblong box(MDF?) with a port and cheap speaker) but we have got used to buying crummy cabs and we have also got used to average sound. I have a DR250 and Tuba24 both voiced for bass guitar (no tweeters on DR and reverse mounted beta 10 on the Tuba). Like I have said before I would take the pepsi challenge against a Ampeq and 8x10 using my Warwick tranny and some overdrive. Afair few BFM users have Mark Bass amps. Compact amps for compact cabs. If I could build more cabs I would build the 010.5 or o10 because of the small size and weight. I vote for Thumper.
11. Nice Tuba there. I have a Tuba 24 and DR250 both tuned for bass guitar only. No going back now. A vast improvment on shop bought . People will always buy shop bought cabs though for the same reasons as they go to McDonalds-- they feel safe with it. If only more people would take their blinkers off and go for DIY then we would not see so many posts regarding "I have such and such a cab and it cost £600 and I am thinking of changing it", They mean its no good. I would do the coke/pepsi challenge with any 8x10 ampeq owner using only a Warwick tranny amp. As long as I can add a trifle of overdrive.
12. Its true. I have seen a chipboard ampeg 8x10. The sides were definately chip because the covering had worn away and you could see. I think it was a older one, quite a lot of famous cabs used all chipboard in the 70s and 80s. The 8x10s are good but vastly overrated. The only reason they sound so good is because they are usually driven by a SVT. A couple of half decent P.A cabs would out do it but would look carp of course.
13. Eminence also give cab sizes now alongside the driver specs on their site.
14. If you really must make a vanilla cab then there are plans for a oblong box on the fane uk website and also celestion I think.
