1. I always enjoyed watching and hearing Paul Slack of the UK Subs as well as all mentioned in this thread. Paul Raven and J.J had the most stage presence of anybody for me.
2. Yes Dan Dare. Its worth pulling a speaker out of any old T.E or H/H as well to upgrade with also if you have the back for it. All the T.E and H/H I have used have been as good as anything alse I tried. My Antoria short scale semi acoustic sounded great with a V-amp 60 (ex H/H staff made) also. Its sad I have no choice but to look for lightweight kit now I am starting again.
3. I like this very much. You should have seen my BFM speaker builds featuring scrap wood, cardboard reinforced with plasterboard tape impregnated with resin for the curved parts of the internals. My cabs were built from scrap apart from a 10 quid sheet of fibre board and some expanding glue. i bought one Emminence 10 beta speaker to share between the two cabs. It was just a enjoyable prodject. Strange thing is I never tested them at any real volume before selling them. Spent 55 quid on the pair.
4. A lot of modern amps are very underpowered unless you really splash out. A old HH, Yamaha or trace bass amp will sound as good as anything to be honest.
5. If you want a nice sounding 15 speaker then I would go and try to find a used trace elliot or HH one or even a Mitsubishi from a old Yamaha cab. New 15's are a bit weak, the old twelves from a trace or HH cab make them sound weak even. 15 inch cabs are a bit of a mystery to me, they sound bad with any modern speaker in but I have tried my old cab with 2 old ones and it sounds good with either.
6. Twin active humbucker pick-up's with a wide range of sounds and tone can be huge or delicate. Steinberger headless hardware. Battery compartment ok and present. All tone and volume knob's present which is unusual on these. In a used but not abused condition with a bit of belt rash, small scratches and a couple of dints and chips but nothing that goes through the paint to the maple body and neck. Rear control panel cover has a crack but is all there. These are really well made quality basses from the 80's. Sound as good as anything and better than most modern kit. Neck is nice and straight. Looking for £250 plus postage. Comes in the original hard case from new with red fluffy lining sir. Spare strings included. Cheers , Phil.
7. I have one of these, they are quality. Buy it.
8. I have found that the Celestion BL15 (around £40) if you can find one works really well in all the 15" cabs I have owned , all 3. If you follow the excellent win programme you will find that the ideal box size for a speakers specs will be sometimes 4 fold bigger than most cabs. I would not worry too much as far as 15s go they are all a much of nowt and seem to work averagedly no matter what. If you want louder I would build a simple Bill Fitzmaurice cab , very easy to build in Tuba,Titan or Omni forms. Even a 10" version would make a joke of commercial 15" cabs. Cheers. 9. Good point i never thought of that, i do'nt know for sure. Thing is though power ratings are pie in the sky. What ever speakers you have you could run this amp from any channel that would suit your speaker ohm rating and as long as you have efficient speakers it will make you want to turn it down. Its a very efficient amp. It sounded like thunder with my Warwick 3-Yamaha P1600- BFM DR24 8ohm on one channel of a rated 180 watts. The maximun the Beta 10 the cab had fitted will put out is 100 watts with any amp according to the experts.
10. Slightly used Yamaha P1600 power amp. The only paint chip are on the large handles, there are no dents. Its rack mounted (2u) in a homemade wooden rack for protection and is a bit homemade but does the job, this is included. 2ohm stereo 350w per channel 4ohm stereo 200w per channel 8ohm stereo 160w per channel 8ohm bridged 400w per channel I have a downloaded manual. Balanced XLR type connectors, balanced phone jacks and barrier imputs. Three operating modes. Speaker terminals are clamps. ; Stereo where channel a and b operate independently. Parallel mode in which a mono source is output by 2 amp systems. Bridge mode in which unit operates as a single amp. Signal clip light for each channel. Variable speed fan with very low noise. All in all a real amp , one of the few TX lucas rated so would be good for a studio, very sturdy. I am not using it though and I don't think I will as my Warwick is plenty enough on its own. I did buy it originally to run the telly mainly but a change if speakers sorted that instead. £100 Pick up from Northants or if you send a courier thats fine. I will post photos when my wife fixes my computer as this is hers.
11. You could do away with all your cabs and build a DR250. A stack looks great though agreed. http://billfitzmaurice.com
12. Very true. In the 70s early 80s the hi magazines told us all you needed for your speaker cables was multi strand electricians cable as its as good as anything for low power. Then advertising got big and started to plug oxygen free cable, monster cable etc. For bass amp to speaker I use Screwfix emmersion heater cable. If people think their special cables sound better than their last ones its because the old cables/joints/connectors were knacked. But if they want to waste money....................
13. My hero Musky. I normally get my teenagers to sort my computer but they only grunt nowadays and I don't do grunting. My learned lazyness on the PC is addictive. Thanks . I don't really know how they sound compeared to a Omni but personally I think the Tuba sounds like a 15 and the DR like a very good 1x12 but with much more output. Have you looked on the BFM site? The forum has some reviews. Hardly anyone builds the DR's for bass guitar in the UK as they are quite complex. The Omni is the most popular build and has less output but is easy to build and you can use any 10" speakers if you wish. The DR and Tuba needs certain speakers fitted ideally although one person mentioned they had put a old Pioneer in the Tuba24 and it sounded good. Its not difficult to sound better than most commercial cabs anyway. Cheers.
14. You could stick as many as you want in the flat front section. In fact thats what the designer suggests if using these cabs for p.a in a array for the top cab only. Mind you he also says tweeters are not much cop for bass guitar. He has forgotten more about cabs than most people know so I always go with what Bill says. I can't put any photos on here I am afraid because I hate computers and cannot be bothered to learn, sorry. Lifes too short and computers will never catch on. Good old Fella that Finnbass is on Finnbass he put my pics up for me from myspace.
15. Do you mean 1 or 2 tweeters on the front like some bass/keyboard cabs have. Or do you mean a array like on the BFM web site so it can be used for P.A. The first method would be easy because you could just drill the hole in the flat front and wire from the speaker. The second method would be tricky but not impossible.
16. Thanks for the interest but life's too short to post these. I am convinced some cheap parcel companies make their money from re-charging the sender for delivering when no-one is at home. I would stay clear of them.
17. Photos here. http://www.finnbass.com/showthread.php?t=3517 http://www.billfitzmaurice.com DR250 £100 Empty Tuba24 £20 Local pick-up only in Northants pleasr only. Both ungigged. Built for a DIY cab project, I already have a tall narrow cab which I use for jammin with mates as its easy to tip in the car. DR has a new Emminence Beta 10 250w at 8ohm fitted. Both under 18 months old. Tuba 24 is empty, made of MDF/ply and needs a beta 10 fitting and a out jack. These are £40 roughly. DR is made from ply and fitted with speaker clamps and has plastic corners fitted now. Both are hand painted matt black. No thrills, could be carpet covered or look ok as they are. Tuba is 24" x 24" DR 22" x 20". (50ibs) The Tuba has been tested with a speaker and they both sound like a very good 12" speaker I would say but with more output. These two cabs are built/tuned for bass/keyboard and not PA.
