1.
Gutted! Hope you get it sorted soon! BTW, nice busty winged lady
Hah, thanks! I've emailed the seller, just waiting on a reply now. Also the busty winged lady is from the Nightwish "End of and Era" album art. I'm quite fond of my flags. As a matter of fact I have another busty lady from another Nightwish album at the top end of my bed. Their artwork always has been awfully pretty.
2. Lemmy's live sound does it for me. It sounds a bit treble heavy in this video, possibly the video, possibly my speakers, but as far as I remember, when I saw them there was a fair bit more bass. Not buckets, this is Lemmy we're talking about, but certainly more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q6jEQnrsCmw
3.
Oh no! I know I shouldn't laugh but I'm really struggling not to as I picture the look on your face when you discovered that. That's gonna need some serious work to make it into a bass mate
Haha, nah, it's fine, you can laugh. I did. Mostly in disbelief, but I still laughed.
4. So I was all excited today because as far as I was aware, I was getting the bass which I planned to base my refit project around today. I got a text while I was at work from my mum telling me that it had arrived just before I finished. I got home fairly sharpish to see what the state of the thing was, and found a wrapped box waiting for me by the door that looked conspicuously too small. "Nah, I must just be imagining things" I said to myself as I grabbed the surprisingly weighty package and ran up to my room with it. I took my bag and coat off, grabbed my knife and set about opening the package. The reveal was not... quite what I was expecting. Close, but... it missed the cigar by about a mile. I was so excited too. ):
5. Dat sparkle! o: Incredibly pretty bass. :3
6. I use a leather DSL Lemmy Iron Cross signature strap (Fanboy mode engage!). It's pretty wide, and very comfortable without any padding or anything. Looks friggin' awesome too.
7.
Nationalities that have said "Oh, you mean you play Bass" (rhymes with Grass) Germany
I do quite like how they say Jazz Bass over there. Gotta say though, I've never heard a native English speaker (or even many non-native speakers come to think of it) refer to it as a b-ass- guitar. This is like the brand pronunciation thread only this one fills me with more despair.
8.
But yes, I always clean my basses when I get them - out comes the chrome polish and I'm off
Nothing like a freshly polished knob, eh?
9. I think basses look far nicer. There are some beautiful guitars too, some I'd take over certain basses any day, but mostly basses win it for me. Edit: And bass players too, actually. There are plenty of attractive guitar players, but then there's more of them. Give them a bass and they instantly become more attractive.
10. I think the latest tone you have there is pretty awesome. I'd say maybe just boost the bass just a tiny bit, and roll off the treble so it isn't quite as harsh, but that's just me. Still an awesome tone though!
11. All of these look awesome, really loving the OP's though. I was considering getting a Zebraprint plate for the P I'm doing up, but I ended up getting a different bass to the one I was originally looking at. Thinking a mirrored plate would look better now. Time shall tell!
12.
There's a for sale section with plenty of them in it. No need to pay new prices. All sorts of basses. All sorts of ages/conditions. Just keep an eye out for what you want, and wait. It's still a buyer's market out there.
Oh, I know that. But still, if I get my contracted hours at work, I can save £30, maybe £40 a week at a push. I get a pretty decent hourly rate, but a full time job would be great. And, plus, y'know, it's always nice to have new things. A £4,000 Infinity is just a little way off though. And a Vampyre. I'd be cool with a regular old Corvette though. =D
13. Hmm. I think I might just stick with the EMGs then. I was sort of hoping that the pickups would have been a lot more involved in getting that sound, but I'm not that surprised. Plus I suppose it's easier for me to justify spending that much on a 'wick when I can finally afford one. =P
14.
I've got a neck p/up (Jazz type) which I bought for a project but didn't use if you're interested...
Thanks, but it's a P bass copy I'm modding, and it only has the single P pickup, so it wouldn't be much use to me I'm afraid!
15. Anyone know which strings Epiphone uses? I really like the ones on my V, and as anal as this might be, I'd miss those red wrapped ends if I changed them out for something that didn't have them. It's all in the details. >.>
16. 'Sup guys? Not entirely sure if this should be here or not, apologies if it's in the wrong place. So, in a few weeks, I'm gonna be looking at getting some new pickups for this refit project I'm starting. My initial thought was to go with EMGs, because I play in a hard rock/metal band, and they seem to be pretty much the go-to pickups for that setting. However, last night I was fapping over some Warwick tone demos on Youtube, and I decided to have a look for some videos of something that isn't a Warwick fitted with MEC pickps. I couldn't find any, so now I'm curious as to how much of the Warwick sound comes from the bass, and how much comes from the pickup. If they sound anything like they do in 'wicks, then I'd love to get my hands on some, but they seem awfully hard to come by in the UK. Anyone have any experience with them? Which brand would you go for given the choice of the two? Thanks in advance!
17. I think the guys before me have it right. No sense in playing in a band you don't enjoy playing in, especially if you don't have a whole lot of energy to throw at it. You could be putting it towards better things. Not necessarily musical things either, but just something that you do enjoy.
18. Apart from the really nice looking ones, P and J basses. Especially P basses. The vast majority just look so uninspiring. To me, anyway. That said, I have recently quite started to get into J basses (and Ps, but only very slightly), and I'm considering one as my next bass. The Japanese not-for-export Aerodynes look amazing. Mind you, Sandberg Ps and Js have always appealed to me. I'm not sure why, but I find the ridiculously attractive. Possibly the finishes. They have some beautiful finishes. Also Musicman...s. Musicmen? Musicmany? Stingrays and sh*t. Just not a fan.
19. Hot damn. I do love the look of Sandbergs, there's just something about those chunky pickups. And for that price? I certainly have a lot of thinking to do about which bass I'm buying next. As if the decision wasn't hard enough already.
20.
So, as they always say, it depends what you are trying to achieve. Most satisfying thing to do, mind...
Some very good points there, thanks! =) And yeah, like I say, this is entirely just to get my eye in with, I don't intend or expect to have a giggable instrument by the end of it, although it would be nice if that were to happen. And my main bass is an Epiphone V, all stock parts, and I love it to bits. Brilliantly made, and tough as nails. I would look at refitting something like it, or a Squier, but I only work part time at Greggs, so once my board and general living costs are taken out of my wages, I only really have £30/40 to play with a week, and if I'm going to be sinking a lot of money into parts, it seems like a better idea to get something stupidly cheap. I realise it means the quality of the finished thing will be lower and stuff, but like I say, it's purely for practice more than anything. I ended up ordering that bass I linked earlier in the thread a few hours ago. Well, not that exact one, it sold before I could get it, but another for about the same price. Excited to see what mess I've gotten myself into. At least it looks pretty!
21. Yeah, they're great guitars. I mean, of course, they're nothing special, after all, they're entry level basses, but for the price, they're great, I still gigged with it for about ten months before it got put out of action and eventually replaced by my Flying V a couple of months later. Mine is one of the older ones, and as I was fitting the new E string (the one previous snapped right before a practice, luckily my guitar player had the Tanglewood), a couple of the teeth on the gears snapped off. Same story as always, half decent guitar let down by bad parts. It's not perfect, by any means, but I still use it a lot to practice with, the V is awfully impractical to sit down with.
22.
Does the end result have to be a Fender-a-like? Surely there are lots of other inexpensive basses out there that would make a good starting point (eg Aria, Ibanez, Tanglewood etc).
Well, no it doesn't, and I do quite like different looking things, hence my refusal to start out on a sh*tty P bass copy. I actually own one of the Ibanez GSR190s, the Jumpstart basses. It was a very nice starter bass, but, now that I've got a little variety, I wouldn't mind having a P bass so much. I actually played a Tanglewood with my band for a few weeks while my Ibanez was out of action with a broken machine head. If I recall correctly I recorded with it too. It was an alright bass, but I doubt I'd spend the money on one. I own a Tanglewood Evolution acoustic though and that thing is beautiful. Part of me toyed with the idea of maybe trying to do something with a cheap BC Rich even, but I'm not sure. Not too keen on how the cheap models look, but I could always change that I suppose. I just quite like the look of this bass really, and it's cheap, which is the main thing. I'm not aiming to have a giggable instrument. It'd be a nice bonus, but as long as I can improve how it sounds and plays to some degree I'll be happy enough. I mostly just want to be sure I can change the parts to my liking and not break it in the process.
23. This. Also pretty much all Iron Maiden stuff. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Z3nBokjZyE&ob=av2e
24. Been happily married to my Laney G150 and 1x15 for going on two years now, I think. It's my first proper amp, and I got it for £200. The thing weighs a f***ing ton, but as far as the sound goes, I love it. Worth £200? Any day. Coupled with the V, it's got a pretty aggressive, lively tone, great for what my band plays. Is it a keeper? It may one day be retired, but I don't think I'll ever sell it on. I can't say I've tried a whole bunch of other stuff having only been playing for just over two and a half years now, but so far I know I'm certainly not a fan of modern Laneys (at least not the combos anyway, never tried anything bigger), and I find it hard very hard to get a tone I like out of the Ashdown 4x10 combos our practice place provides, and I've gotten a lot of time with them. The biggest things I'd like to try would be an Ampeg 8x10 and some Marshalls. Particularly the Lemmy signature stack. I won't need something that large for a loooong time (if ever, but here's hoping), but I'd love to have one regardless. They sound ridiculously angry. And then there's the speakers. 4x15 and a 4x12. Over the top rock and roll crap like this wins me over far too easily. Wouldn't change it for the world though.
