1.
I wonder why it has no tone knob?
Look, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm just here to try and get some information on a bass I'm interested in, not indulge in any sort of musical elitism.
 2.
Crappy playing would be quite fitting on a Pete Wentz bass.
Different strokes for different folks and all that.
I would stay well clear of this. A few of the more impressionable youngsters that I've done some substitute teaching for have these. None are by any stretch any good. IMO the best part is the pickup but my idea of a P bass is really warm not much treble, but the pickup and no tone control make it very harsh sounding. It would be worth note that Pete Wentz doesn't really use this bass unless Fender has told him too. Personally I would save the pennies and get the 60's classic vibe P.
Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I personally prefer a little more of a harsh sound, but, not too harsh. And I really did enjoy the Classic Vibe actually. Not too taken by the colour, but it was really... easy to play, I guess. Felt like my V but without the bloody awkward body shape. Still, might as well try it out. Could be what I'm looking for, could not be, only one way to find out really!
 3. "We just need to write loads more new songs. We're not as good as we should be. Let's not practice the old stuff any more and just write new stuff." Right. So... you say we need to get better, and... we can make that happen by not practising? And the best thing to fill the setlist with is more new songs that we definitely aren't happy with yet? This kind of logic makes me cry night.
 4.
JG Windows in Newcastle were good. I tried a few basses in there and asked if I could try the Fender American Jazz. I told them it was out of my budget but I wanted to try it for comparison and they were. I bought my Dean in Windows in Metro Centre and the guy was great. I told him I'd not played in 17 years so he let me get a feel for some basses then played a few for me so I could get an idea of their sound.
Windows is great. Some of the employees can seem a bit uninterested at times, but once they get to recognise you they're usually pretty willing to let you do your own thing. Had a decent chat with one of the guys a few months back about Fenders and Squiers and what sort of thing I might be looking for etc, very helpful guy. They've taken quite a lot of money off my hands. The Metro Centre one is cool too, but it's a bit out the way seeing as I don't drive. I just wish they'd get some more basses in. ._.
 5. I should be able to get one to try out at Sounds Live, so that's pretty cool. I always feel like I'm being judged for my crappy playing when I go in there though. I probably ought to start saving up at some point, either way.
 6.
As I remember it he had a rather shocking close personal tragedy, about which he spoke briefly on here. I hope things are improving for him, he is one of the good guys!!
I feel bad for posting that now. :/ Hope he's alright!
 7. We played a decent sized acoustic gig once, before I had my Tanglewood. I just took my Ibanez along, used the neck pickup and rolled the tone back off a bit, and it worked fine. There was a guy there taking pictures and, to be honest, it didn't even look that out of place.
 8.
Mighty Boosh link imminent!
Aww, you beat me to it. f*** it. I'm posting it anyway. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vziriyVgk24&feature=related
 9. Awesome! I hope it works out for you. :3
 10.
Nowt wrong with a Flying V Bass.......
Hah, don't think of this as a replacement at all. I fully intend to have a pretty big collection one day, this is merely the start of it.
Bit of a price leap but the Matt Freeman (rancid) sig is super and also available in black/maple
See, I prefer the looks of this one. I like things that stand out a little more, especially when it comes to P or J basses. Not because I'm trying to be different for the sake of being different, I just like stuff like that. I had a play of a Squier Classic Vibe P today (the only Squier they had in actually, that and the 50's style CV) just to try and get a vague approximation of the type of quality I could be looking at. I really liked how it played and sounded. Frets maybe could have done with a little more work, but only a minor concern, they were still pretty playable. I'd have liked to have tried something a little closer to the price I'm looking at for the bass in question, but I didn't really have much choice. It did however seem pretty hard to get much of a variation of tone from it, but then I was playing through and Ashdown half stack which, while this one was one of the nicer Ashdowns I've played through, is still an Ashdown. We just don't get on. So I'm thinking I might chalk it down to that. Plus this bass doesn't even have a tone knob, so, that's already sort of decided I guess.
 11.
I may well be being ignorant, but I get a little lost with some of the signature versions of standard basses - does this being Pete Wentz's signature bass give you any substantial difference in features over a regular MIM Fender or Squier Precision?
Well, honestly, I'm not all that sure. Fender/Squier aren't really my thing, and I can't actually manage to pin down quite where these were put together. I know it (apparently) has a Jazz neck though, and I'm guessing it'd be safe to assume you wouldn't get that on a standard P. That's a pro for me, I'm quite taken by thin necks. It also doesn't have a tone knob, so everything is that little bit wider open that it would be otherwise, plus it's loaded with some Duncan designed pickups. That said, I've heard pretty mixed reviews of Duncan designed stuff, so that's neither here nor there, and they could always be changed pretty easily if they suck. Mind you, all the demos I've heard of it seem to sound pretty good. And as for my V, I wouldn't hold your breath. =P
 12.
If your main reason for wanting that bass is aesthetics then I'd just get a black P bass and stick a tort pickguard on it. I don't think that bass will have much appeal beyond Pete Wentz fans so if you ever want to sell it I think you might find it tricky.
Ah, okay, maybe I should rephrase that. It's not the deciding factor, I like how it sounds there are some pretty clear Youtube demos, and it seems to have a lot of punch, but I also do really quite like the way it looks. And re-sale isn't really that much of an issue really. Out of all my stuff, my guitars are the last things I'd sell, out of want or necessity.
 13. Don't know a whole lot about them myself, but Ed Friedland has reviewed one. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5rOun38Ehk
 14. So I'm possibly considering this as my next bass, mostly because I think it's quite pretty, and I think it's about time I got something a little more traditional looking in my collection. http://www.fender.co...rtno=0301074506 However, I have a couple of gripes. The first and biggest being that I haven't yet played a P that I've been that happy with. I haven't played one through my amp yet, and, I do like how my amp sounds with pretty much everything, so I may be swayed on that yet. Plus this apparently has a slim neck, which I'm a fan of. The other is that it's a Squier. I know a lot of people on here say some Squiers are great, but, the consensus seems to be that they're generally somewhat hit and miss. I was wondering if, being a signature model, the build quality would be any more consistent at all? Anybody have any experience with this (or any other Squier signature model, really)? I have no issue with the name, I'm just concerned about ending up with a bad one. The other thing I'm thinking about getting would be a Fender Aerodyne Jazz, but I'm quite particular about which I'd get, and with the price it'd probably be a substantial amount longer before I could get it. And I'm a slave to GAS. >.>
 15. This this is beautiful, and I'd love to have it. Alas, it'll be a long time before I can afford it. Bump for pretty vintage-ness.
 16. The places we play tend not to have an issue with boominess really. I don't play with a whole heap of bottom end too though (I know, I know, slap on the wrist and that >.>), so that probably helps a bit. The sound on stage is, more often than not, f***ing awful though. One piss-weak monitor (on a good day) to serve the whole band. My amp is pretty loud, so I can always hear myself, but, seeing as the drums and my rhythm guitar player's amp are between me and the lead guitarist, I often have trouble hearing him. Luckily, I don't take many cues from him, but it's still nice to hear him ripping a solo every now and then.
 17. I don't know if any of these are suitable, but they might give you some ideas for re-arranging something. http://hardrockhideout.com/2007/04/17/butchering-the-beatles-a-headbashing-tribute-released-2006/ Another from that album that isn't on that page that's a bit simpler; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btKXo5w83O4
 18. After watching a few of these videos, I feel entirely inferior and that I'm going to be laughed at for my awful playing, but... I had a hell of a lot of fun at this gig, and that's what counts, right? Right? ;-; Also, when we hit the big intro loud thing, I think the nerves were getting to me a bit. Got a bit over-enthusiastic and caused the E string to skip off the nut. Took me a few seconds to realise. Hell of a start. Some pretty seriously suspicious playing in the second song too actually. >.> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=piU6Vt4QEBM&feature=my_liked_videos&list=LLWGcIzc-67pIn5tk41pFasw Also this! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IkwLSi6n_I&feature=plcp&context=C46b3692VDvjVQa1PpcFOrCpvg9o2q8u9WbFkKKwKkdqieUwgXw8I%3D Still waiting for my singer to upload the rest, but I think on the whole they're pretty cool. :3
 19.
Oh, I know that. All I'm saying is that if a seller puts 'we wont accept returns for X reason' it's dodgy... Combine that with a stock image of a bass and a description that is clearly meant for a guitar spells trouble.
The same people actually sell a guitar that fits and has the exact same description as what I bought. I guessed it'd have been a copy and paste error. Either way, I don't mind that much, I can still do what I was planning on doing with it, and it's quite pretty, so it's not like I'm stuck with something I don't like. It was more of a surprise than anything else. =P
 20.
To be fair, the only thing that suggests it is a bass is the stock picture. Everything else SCREAMS guitar!
Well, that and item name. Jaxville Custom Demon Bass Guitar. ;D
 21. I'm not usually a fan of light coloured fretboards, but that thing is beautiful. She stays!
 22.
D'oh. so whats the plans for it now?
Send it back and hopefully get it replaced with what I was supposed to get. If not, I need a regular old six string anyway, so I don't suppose it would harm to try to make a decent guitar out of this instead. Or just get a refund. Ebay is usually pretty good when something like this goes wrong.
 23.
MB1. DOH! Is it a Rare one of Ebile?
Yup. I know the description disagrees completely, but I figured it was just a copy and paste job, seeing as it refers to a different finish entirely. Behold it's majesty: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/280835801400?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 Is that not a bass guitar being advertised? Does it not have four strings and a long neck?
 24.
Is there any chance of sending it back? Strange looking bass to me
Hopefully! Aside from the damage, which I knew about when I bought it, it's actually quite pretty. The fretboard isn't mind, that's in awful condition, but I was planning on changing the neck anyway. The bass I was expecting is pretty much the same thing, but, it's a bass, obviously. So here's hoping!
