1. Oh wow, that sounds awesome! I also think that's a pretty awesome band name =P
2. So last night I played played the Academy 2 in Newcastle. It was amazing. We rocked so goddamn hard, and we even managed to get a pit going during our last two songs, without any encouragement or anything. There were maybe 150-200 people there, so it's the first time I've played anything this big. I know it's not massive, but the most we've ever had before is maybe 70 people. I don't think I've ever felt quite this good before. I had so. Much. Fun. *Edit! I'd also like to add that my ears are still ringing. Not because it was too loud, but apparently young girls can hit a pitch when they scream that is actually physically painful. I should also clarify that it wasn't all young girls we played to. >.> So what about you guys? What are the best, biggest gigs you've played? Most memorable? Kgo.
3. A few things really. Metallica, with Orion. The whole song is fun to play, but the chordy bit that starts around 3:50 is always a good place to start. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qYqi-EMErU Also For Whom the Bell Tolls, mostly because of how f***ing cool Rob looks in this video, but the chorus could be fun to teach beginners to play. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ztk1V4utYdA Some Guns and Roses stuff too, although I'm still yet to get round to learning much of it. Velvet Revolver too, Slither in particular, I think that was the first bassline I learned. Also Nightwish stuff, but that was also partly just because of how goddamn cool Marco looks with that Warwick. My biggest inspiration by far. Dunno if their stuff is very beginner friendly though.
4. Not a fan of the greenburst, but the Gothic Black V-STD 4 and the Natural V-DXE 4 look VERY nice. I'd be interested in finding out the quality of these.
5.
Have no preconceptions
This, a million times this. I was never a Fender fan myself, but try a decent one and having a bit of a play with it. I still don't like Precisions much, but I have several Jazz basses on my to buy list now.
6. "Yeah, my kick pedal was just slipping around", when the frummer was asked if he knew the bridge part. Really? So that's why you stopped playing entirely? Nice one. This is starting to seem like one of those situations where it's better to just try someone else than try to improve what we have. Happens almost every week. Hell, our first drummer stepped in for a gig a few months after he had left (due to his replacement being kicked out), having only had one practice to get back into the swing of things, then on the night had eight pints and three spliffs, and didn't miss a beat. I think there was only one thing he did wrong, and given the part he made it in, it sounded like part of the song anyway.
7. I'm jealous of his legs. >.> But if he's half as pretty under that mask as I imagine him to be, goddamn, he'd be perfect. There aren't enough pretty guys who play bass. No offence chaps.
8.
nothing involving spandex please!
Hey now, don't knock spandex. But no, there are some very good points here, especially about acknowledging the audience. Movement always seems to help, doesn't have to be thrashing about the place though, even just having a bit of a move around your side of the stage. I've been wandering about the house trying to get used to playing on the move and while concentrating on other things lately, I'm awful on stage really.
9.
here is my rig, behringer bvt 5500head, marshall 4x12 celestion drivers, marshall 2x10 and 1x15 eminence drivers .
And your Fireglo Rickenbacker. Goddamn I am jealous.
10. I like this more than I liked their RV4s. Anyone here own/owned a Retrovibe? I couldn't bring myself to buy a Ric copy because I'd have felt like I was lying to myself. Were they any good?
11.
I kind of fancy it in the pictures, but not sure how it would look onstage.
I played a transparent black Tanglewood on stage once that went green when the lights hit it. I really didn't like it very much. Personal opinion and all that though.
12. It varies from guitar to guitar, but I'm a big fan of more unusual burst colours. My favourites would probably be Silver and Purpleburst, and Blueburst if it's done right. Some guitars suit being colourful, some don't. I'd love an orange Ric mind. Or white.
13. Ghost River, by Nightwish. Badass. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rjgWNE-Bpk
14. Thanks guys! This seems like a pretty cool place!
15. Yeah, I had noticed a few active basses with screw down covers. It did seem like a bit of a stupid idea, really.
16. Ah, that's excellent, thank you! It's probably not something I'd do just yet, but it would be nice to have all those tonal options I guess.
17. Hey guys! I'm Jamie, but in Internet terms, I go by Icarus, where possible. I'm 18, and in a hard rock/metal band called Blowout Rodeo. There's not really any story behind that name, we just smashed together two possible names we had (Blowout Morgan and Astral Rodeo) and came out with that. f***ing random band name generators man. But hey! Check us out if you like. We recently recorded some awful demos where the guy who mixed them turned the bass up far too high. http://www.facebook.com/BlowoutRodeo I've not been playing all that long, just over two years now, and I'm not really very good. I can hold my own, but I'm only just about to start getting theory lessons and such. Probably should have looked into that a little earlier. I plan on building up a nice little collection of basses though, with a few guitars in there just because. They're beautiful looking things, after all. I currently own an Epiphone Flying V '58 Korina reissue, in Alpine White, all stock save for the Schaller strap locks I just installed. I don't know if it's just my amp, the guitar, or both, but it has such a mean tone to it. Short scale, so it growls like hell, and it's loud. Goddamn is it loud. All my love. I also have an Ibanez GSR190 in transparent red. Unfortunately there's little to no grain on the fron of the guitar, whereas the back actually looks quite nice. It's got stickers on it, and orange DR Neons, which the coating has come off quite badly around where I pick, and now is starting to come away over the fretboard too. Still looks cool though. I also swapped out one of the machine heads that broke for a black one, as opposed to chrome, and installed black strap locks and two black knobs. Gonna look at getting some EMGs put in to try to improve the sound a bit. It sounds alright for an entry level bass, but it is just that, entry level. Also considering putting a black bridge on there and leaving either one or three of the saddles chrome. I think that'd look pretty cool. I also own a Tanglewood Evolution acoustic in black. Very relaxing to play. My amp is an old Laney G150 and the 1x15 cab. I think it's about 20 years old or so, possibly getting on for 25. I don't really have a whole lot to say about it, but as far as my rock/metal tone goes? It's amazing. Haven't really messed about with it with many other styles, I usually use my Pandora for funk and such. I also have a Boss ODB-3, CEB-3 and BF-3. I'm really quiet in person, but I talk a lot on the internet. It's like I think people care. ._. But yeah, if you're still reading, that's me :3 ALSO! I'm looking at picking up a new bass in the next few weeks. I'm probably going for something under £400, but I'd stretch to £500 if it was that much better. Top contenders are the Epiphone Thunderbird Pro, in Natural Oil, and the Fender Modern Player Jazz. If anyone has any better suggestions they'd be totally welcome, even though I know you probably stopped reading long ago. I'm not terribly attractive, but here's a very recent picture! I'm going to bed now. >.>
18. Oh, wow, I had no idea they'd actually last that long. That's pretty helpful, thanks! I was thinking I'd be having to change batteries every month or so. Really tempted to get the Thunderbird now...
19. Hi guys, I'm looking at buying another bass in the next few weeks, and I played a Thunderbird Pro a couple of months back and loved it to bits. I'm going shopping again this week to try to properly make up my mind, but I can see myself walking away with the Thunderbird quite easily. HOWEVER! I have a bit of a concern. It's the active electronics. Now, all of the basses I've had have been passive, so I've never had to worry about batteries and such. Also, the most I've ever done to change my bass's hardware in any way is installing straplocks, so this is why I'm coming to you guys. I saw a Warwick a while back, I forget which one, but it was primarily active, however it had a push-pull pot that switched it between active and passive modes. I'd be interested in installing something like this into the Thunderbird, if I were to get it, the problem is, I don't know how easy that would be to do. I have very little knowledge of electronics, so I don't know how costly this would be to do (If possible at all), and, naturally, I'd be looking at having someone do it for me because this doesn't seem like the kind of thing I should try to do myself without any previous experience. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated! If I wasn't particularly clear about anything just let me know and I'll try to explain what I was going on about. Thanks!
20. My Alpine White Epi Flying V reissue. I love her dearly. <3 You get quite a good look at her if you skip to around 1:55. I should probably add that, in the unlikely event of people going off and watching other videos of us, we don't actually play the majority of the songs we have videos of now. Some of them were, quite frankly, terrible ideas. As were the acoustic sets we did when our second drummer left/got kicked out. I mean, we only did three, and two of them were absolutely awful, to the point that I actually wanted the building to collapse in on me, but then we played at the very first run of this local acoustic weekender, and people loved us. It's well past my bedtime and I'm talking to myself. I should probably just let you look at the pretty bass now. I don't have very many pictures of me playing her live, let alone good ones, and most of the pictures I've taken are either horrible quality webcam shots or they don't have the whole bass in them, such as this one;
21. So this is my Laney G150 and it's 1x15. I cannot stress how much I love the sound of this thing. First amp I got after my practice amp, because I had joined a band, and... I don't know how I managed to score so well. £200, and I won't be needing anything else for a very long time. The stickers, colouring and writing are all mine. From left to right I have my Belcat PST-10 power station, which I would reccomend to anyone, great value, then my Korg Pandora PDX5, my Boss Bass Overdrive ODB-3, Boss Bass Chorus CEB-3, and Boss Flanger BF-3. And yes, it is also being used as my bedside table. I'll be moving out before the end of next year with a little luck... Plan on buying as many basses as I can before I have lots of bills to pay. And here are my babies, just because I like showing them off. From left to right, Epiphone Flying V '58 Korina reissue (my current workhorse, which I absolutely adore), Ibanez GSR-190 with some personal touches, like a single black machine head and two black knobs as opposed to all chrome hardware (waiting on black Schaller strap locks), and some orange DR Neons, which I actually quite like, even if the coating is coming off a bit. And finally my Tanglewood Evolution. Beautiful to look at, and very nice to play too. I'll stop boring you now. ._.
22. Would it be silly of me to ask if this bass is still for sale this long after the ad was posted? Because if not I would be VERY interested. Desperate to get my hands on one of these babies.
