Thanks for posting - wonderful basses. I remember falling in love with a white fretless Marathon in Glasgow in the early eighties. Was lucky to have to have owned a fretless six string Marathon - same colour as your Modulator. One of those instruments you definitely regret selling on..... Would love to get a double neck - will need to update my searches on flea-bay !
2. There seems to be a different valve amp coming out of the woodwork every week - not so for us bass players. I know the physics/electronics means in reality we need more power than our high pitched cousins...... but......... Are there any guitar amps out there that could cut the mustard as bass amps - I'm sure there are some Marshall or Hiwatt amps out there that are more than up for the job. Equally, are there any (inexpensive) valve amps out there that could be modded ?
3. Great stuff ! - I love all this talk of building your own beast. I'd love to do the course that John Shuker provides - buidling your own bass from scratch . http://www.shukerguitars.co.uk/course.htm Appears to be offering a course on set-up and slight mods/repairs as well......
4. Wow - these look the bees knees ! Any piccies of the 5-ver or fretless versions yet ?
5. Sorry to hear about the loss of this nice piece of kit. I always fancied (and still do fancy) a black one of these - with mirror scratchplate of course - to go for the authentic Phil Lynott look. Hope it turns up safe and sound.
6. Putting this amp up for grabs. Have owned since new. Amp is now two years old and in as new condition. This is the 350w@4ohms - 500w@2ohms version. Specsheet is to be found below http://www.genzbenz.com/?fa=detail&mid...=424&cid=95 Includes Genz Benz gig bag Great sounding piece of kit withe the 12AX7 tube preamp part providing the warmth and the switch mode power amp section providing the shove. Looking for £300 ono plus shipping. No trades please - I'm putting the funds towards an all valve amp. Going to try one for a while to see how I get on with it. If you live near Newport South Wales - feel free to pop on by to try it out.
7. Danelectro Longhorn bass - the "Dead on 58" model in fabulous copperburst. In nigh on mint condition. Letting her go to help pay for a new instrument coming my way - a Lakland 5-string Glaub Bargain price - half what you'll pay over the internet retail price. Will ship in box she came in. If you live near Newport in South Wales and fancy a shot before you buy - please PM me ! Very light, very easy to play and with a great sound this is a lot of bass for the wonga ! No trades ! 9. Lovely piece of kit - if I wasn't chasing after a 5-string Glaub at the moment I think I 'd bite your hand off. Good luck with the sale !

11. Makes you want to put a mirror scratchplate on your P-bass......
12. Geez Al what ARE you thinking.......get her fretted - think of all that time you spent speccing her, saving for her, researching....... You can get ebony inlays to replace the existing ones on the side of the fingerboard. Would look nice with some maple dots actually on the fingerboard along with the frets - a la US Lakland Still loving the 6-string Thumb by the way

Nash 58 P-Bass

Bridge fixed ! I'm going to keep her - still love that crazy big neck.
14. Yes - low B - that means high F !
15. This is a bummer - I'd love to be there but will be attending mates wedding in Scotland that weekend. Didn't Eltham Jones attend the last one - giving handy set up tips. I say that as Eltham has just sorted out a problem with the bridge on my Nash 58 P-Bass. I could ask if he's available ......if no-one knows him already that is ! Jan Akkerman playing the Globe in Cardiff on Sunday night (1st May) so could be one great day.
16. The fretless 5-string deluxe alien rockbass got a good review in bass guitar magazine last year. Looking on the Thomann website they quoted a price of £540 or so shipped to the UK. Never seemed to have any in stock mind, with likely arrival dates of Jan 2011 and Feb 2011 passing. When you look now, the estimated time of arrival is June 2011. Don't know what issues they are experiencing. I believe the fretted bass is more universally available. Will hold out till the fretless becomes available...... Good way of getting into the acoustic bass I think. If you really get into it you can always save up for the non-rockbass equivalent. Mind you, that Tacoma 5-string is very appealing. You'd like to believe that Warwick tried solid woods but didn't think there was much advantage. Who knows.......
17. Up for grabs is a newish - 1 year old - H&K 7-string fretted bass. Supplied with new strings (Rotosound). Plays very well - really great neck. Body has a scuff mark on it - it arrived that way but is readily buffed out. Would make a great instrument to see if the 7-string thing is for you. I'm selling as the 7-string thing isn't really for me - 4, 5 or 6 is enough already ! If you live near Newport South Wales you'd be more than welcome to come try her out. Looking for £275 for her plus shipping - cost £475 new - so a bit of a bargain I would say. No trades please !

Nash 58 P-Bass

Nothing wrong with the neck - bass plays perfectly fine. Bridge could do with being moved a few millimeteres to the left as you look at it come to think of it. Can get this done by Eltham Jones - who I usually rely on to do any work on my guitars/basses.

Pre Xmas bump and price drop ! Now asking £850 plus shipping.
20. Good to know - I have a 5-string Pro-M and a 6-string Thumb that could do with such pre's. I really do hate the hissy noisy pre-amps they currently have.......
21. RE The Glasgow gig - was it the "Blue Matter" tour ? - if so a drummer friend of mine saw that very same gig. Was amazed to see DC's roadie put an ANVIL inside his bass drum to stop it from moving. You couldn't make it up.......
22. He he - the bees knees ! Saw this couple play with John Scofield in Long Island in 1988 - Grainger got a 15 minute bass solo ! After DC had his drum solo there was a standing ovation..... Superb band - would love to see then get together again.
23. I'll certainly keep tabs on the fingerboard wear situation. I had a Lakland 55-02 modded by The Gallery in Camden and the unlined maple board was given a lovely thick polyurethane coating which has proven to be quite robust. So, if there is a problem on that front I can get them to do it. I believe Mr Shuker can do such work as well, though I am sure I have heard mention of others. Please feel free to post your recommendations !
24. Hi Phil, I believe they (B.Hefner) can do the early 50's headstock shape if you want to preserve the vintage look. Shoot - now you're giving me ideas ! I got my P Bass neck from the very same model of bass as Andy Travis above - natural ash body - and put it on a MIJ sunburst P-Bass body. I got my MIJ instruments from Ishibashi in Japan in 2006. Don't think they sell new instruments now due to Fender getting all uppity, but I imagine it's not a problem for used instruments. Another possible source I suppose but not likely to be as fruitful as US e-bay or B.Hefner. If you do go down the B. Hefner route you'll have to add tuners as well mind.... Don't forget piccies when you get the bass you want !
