1. Ah thank you! So had my first rehearsal with my Ampeg PF115HE. First off, when pushing it (around 12 o'clock) because the Aguilar is so light, it was shaking on top of the amp and vibrating! So if I am going to keep it, I will have to attached it to the cab. Sound-wise, it was great. Full and pretty much got what my TH Pedal was doing. However, I think my P Bass is distorting Specifically on G, on my Low E string. Not entirely sure whats causing that or how that could happen?? I have another rehearsal with another band on Thursday and I'll be using two cabs, so I will get a different perspective then. And with a different bass.
2. Gents, Went for the TH500. So far, sounds great. Got a good deal on a Newly New at Gear4music. But I've just noticed, the fan at the back isn't turning. This this normal? The volume isn't pumping as its in the house, so it'll get a proper run out on Sunday night at rehearsal.
3.
I think so. Having had a Tone Hammer and a MB Little Mark I know which I'd choose.
Soooo MB? Since I have the TH pedal?
4.
I tried both when I went to buy a new head and the Aguilar to me had a certain something from the get go that I really liked...its a wolf in Sherpa clothing.
Thats good to know man thanks! My only thing is that, I have the Tonehammer pedal, so the idea of mixing and matching sounds is appealing (TH pedal with MB Bass head) I feel as if I had the TH pedal and TH head, the pedal maybe redundant?
5.
The PF800 has always had good reviews and doesn't seem to have had any of the reliability issues that's dogged the PF500 in the past. But I have the TH500 and it's a great amp that I'd recommend over many other current amps.
When my PF500 comes back, I am gonna compare it with the MB, as thats the only one I can get a listen to in Belfast. Then if sounds better, go for the PF800. Maybe
6. It's finally decision time. I've had enough of Ampeg. They have had my PF500 for nearly a month and only today did I finally get an update. I love the aesthetic of the Portaflex cabs, so for now I am keeping both (15 and the 2x10) The gigs will range from using either 1 or 2 cabs. So the head needs to meet the requirements of both scenarios. Aguilar TH500 - More expensive, but from the TH pedal it sounds great. Output at 8 ohms is lower than the MB MB Little Tube 800 - Power at 8ohms and 4 ohms, mix between tube signal and dry, but doesn't fit in as aesthetically as the TH500. HELP!
7. Update! So through my complete doing, I did not realise the Tonehammer required an 18V, not 9V! Which is what I've been running it on for the past 8 months. So hopefully that will solve the issue!
8. I think the best mindset is: Play to the gig In essence, you know you're playing to a small/medium venue this week, with a limited speaker system - volume doesn't go higher than 12 o'clock, check you aren't louder than everyone else, but make sure you can hear yourself. Medium/large - DI'd, or mic'd (depending on the sound guy). Work with them on works best and again, make sure you aren't louder than everyone else on stage, but you can hear yourself. No matter how great you think it is to have a loud bass on stage and it sounds great. The sound guy might not think so and he's the one who will make the gig great or terrible for the audience. The head room you have on your chosen amp can allow you to play to the gig. My preference is to have 1 system that can accommodate both.
9. Going to investigate this evening and see what could be causing it!
10. This will only be potentially for one gig. I am currently using D'Addario EXL160's and they may do the job. I don't really want to change anything with the bass, due to the nature of the gig. But would there be anything out there I could use?
11. I have had my Mini for a two years and wish it had a hard case at the time. The soft case is fine, but the ends need re-stitched. You may as well go for a hard case for its durability and will be thankful if you ever drop your pedal board!
12. I have been using the Diao Micro Power Supply for sometime, but after looking into an alternative as it has hit some bad wear and tear, I am curious as to whether a 'just enough' power supply would affect output? I tested a new Mark Bass Little Tube 800 and comparing the sound from not through my board to straight in the amp, I lost a decent amount of volume. I still need to define if what pedals may cause the deficiency, but would the power supply have any role?
13. Aguilar Chorusaurus. Fantastic low end filling chorus from subtle sounds to almost tremolo-esque features. Also boost your signal a bit so it can cut through. One of the best pedals I've ever bought.
14.
I think it's a bit unfair not to give recognition to your PF500; a more considerate amp would be hard to imagine ... not only did it break down at a rehearsal rather than at a gig, but it also did so on a Saturday morning and gave you the whole afternoon to organise a replacement. Ampeg deserve to be legendary for their customer support.
Well if I haven't rehearsed, I would have played the gig with no spare head. So I should be thanking me for that. Second, I know of no other product, I or bass playing friends that has had a head die twice. I have an Ashdown combo that has been running successfully for 10 years. No faults. Thirdly, if Ampeg in the first place decided to produce a product that would end up having a reputation of faults, then I wouldn't need to be getting an product repaired through their customer support.
15.
PF800 sounds a good option, am yet to read of any problems with these. The Tonehammer 500 is a great amp - I`ve had the PF500, currently have the TH500 and volume wise there is a lot more available on the TH500.
Yeh I have the Tonehammer pedal and it is such an amazing addition to the rig. I don't want it then to become useless though since I will have the TH500. I suppose the AGS function of the pedal is worth it though.
16. At a rehearsal on Saturday morning, my PF500 decided to kick the bucket once again. Incredibly frustrating as I had a gig that evening and a couple over the Christmas period. So once it gets back from repair, it will be sold for something of greater reliability. But, since I use the portaflex cabs I would like something that fits in the aesthetic to some degree. 3 possibilites: PF800 - I assume it is more reliable? Fits into aesthetic. Mark Bass - Little Tube 800 - More gain, great sound, but doesn't fit in the aesthetic Aguilar Tone Hammer 500 - Good middle ground option, but I always struggled with output from the PF500, so the tone hammer will just have the same problem. Any other suggestions?
17. Aguilar Chorusarus - just purchased recently and it is a fantastic addition. I like subtle chorus to add a little bit of depth and colour. Worth every penny and really well built.
18.
If the horn hisses it's working. The source of the hiss isn't the tweeter, it's the amp. Speakers will only reproduce the signal that is sent to them. The intended function is reproduction of frequencies above the range of the woofer. The typical implementation tends to be flawed, as what's required isn't a tweeter that starts at 4kHz, it's a midrange that starts at 2kHz, if not lower.
Perfect thank you!
19. Absolute amateur question here! Was playing with horn High Frequency Level switch on the back of my PF-115HE as it is the one thing I have always ignored. But I started to not really hear any differences between the sound, apart from a massive hiss from the horn. I stuck my ear close to the horn and all it seems to produce is hiss - my, again amateur knowledge, would think high frequencies would come from the horn? Is my horn broken or is this the intended functionality?
20. Few changes since the last time! The black centre pedal is a clone of the Ezekiel 25:17. Absolute beast of a distortion pedal. New addition is the Aguilar Chorusaurus. Beautiful pedal and tonight will be the first time it'll be out in the wild!
21. So i have been using the Ampeg Portaflex series for over 4 years now (I think!). Great wee combo and super handy. However, at times it has never given me the tone I'm after and I have always struggled to get volume. I tried the PF-800 head, but it wasn't worth the extra bucks. I could get another cab, but after seeing Death Cab for Cutie on Monday and what he runs, I basically want to copy that sound! So! Looking at the ABM-600 head and maybe going for the ABM115 EVO and the ABM-210H-Compact. That way depending on the gig/space/car room, I can add/remove a cab if required. I assume the tonemaster/toneman is the cheaper end of the ashdown range? http://www.thomann.de/gb/ashdown_toneman_115_deep.htm So thoughts/opinions? In conjunction with this, I had a Ashdown 1x15 combo 'Electric Blue' cab since I was 16 and it is still probably the loudest and best amp I have ever owned. Hence my push to go back to Ashdown.
22. I was a victim of the PF-500 issue, however after being sent back to Ampeg, it has not failed on me yet. I actually tried out the PF-800 last Saturday, as I wanted a little bit more head room. To be honest, there was not much difference between the two and definitely glad I did not fork out the money for the PF-800. But, in regards to reliability, yes I have heard the same.
