I'll try 2 210s and stach em vertically then Cheers, I've learnt something today
Good decision. You'll be pleased I think.

Thanks for your comments guys. They echo all my thoughts really. Just need to convince everyone else now.

SOLD Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie Hella Fuzz - B. Excellent condition, with box etc. Best fuzz I've ever used. However, I only actually use it for one song and I just can't justify having a dedicated fuzz at the moment when I can get an "almost there" tone with my distortion pedal. So to make space on the board, and generate cash for something else, this will have to be sacrificed. It really is as good as they say ! £110 posted within mainland UK. £112 posted within the EU. Usual Volume, gain and shape (ie. tone) controls plus a clean blend on the side by the input jack. Usual 9V Boss-type adapter needed to power or 9V battery (not supplied) Full details at .... http://wrenandcuff.com/site/the-stompboxes/the-pickle-pie-b/ Wren & Cuff's demo vid - go to about 3m20s to start listening to some of the better tones. http://youtu.be/2tnxrLu2Suk
The RCFs over the Proels every time! Aside from the fact that the RCFs are better cabs all round; the resale value of those Proels will be pants in comparison to RCFs.
Agreed on re-sale value. To be honest, I expect whatever cabs are bought to be kept until they die so re-sale value would not be a huge issue for me. Would you still feel the same with just pure ability and reliability of the cabs ? And why ?

Well, the story is that due to a change of personnel one of my bands is having to buy a new set of active FoH cabs. We are a relatively loud pub rock band and we mainly put vocals plus some drums and guitar through the FoH. Bass all comes from my rig though. So, we thought that a decent set of 15" cabs with no subs should do the job. I was working on a budget of £400-£450 per cab and the RCF ART 315 A's seemed perfect. I can also get them with a 3 year warranty. However (there's always a "however") our drummer has a mate who does sound for the BBC (or something like that) who has strongly recommended these Proel cabs (the WD15A) I have never heard of ...... http://www.proel.com/proel/products/new_sound_system.html?cid=13540074059530/13540252221720/&pid=kms/11066738967290/13686085120770#.UmyEnfxFDcs And says that he can get them for us for £350 each. My gut tells me that the RCF's would be a better bet. Mainly due to actually being designed as a FoH cab, not a monitor, and having a larger cab size, as the PRoel cab's size looks small enough to be limiting bottom end to me, and I know that we will be pushing these fairly hard at times. The Proel specs are also a little coy in their accuracy. The RCF's are also a known item, with known decent reliability and ability. Has anybody any experience of these Proel cabs, or can anyone give me any advice or ammunition when I get back to the band this week.
I may well be wrong, but didn't Matsumoku fit DiMarzio Model P pick ups into a lot of their basses? These definatly look alot like them with the adjustable polepieces. Bargain for somebody at £19 if they are.
I have no reason to think this is Dimarzio, although it is possible it may be. I have owned a late 70's/early 80's cream covered Dimarzio precision pickup (had Dimarzio moulded into the inside of the pickup cover), and it looked nothing like this underneath. This one is also 4 conductor, and to my knowledge, Dimarzio P pickups of the period would all be 2 conductor. Still doesn't mean it isn't a Dimarzio, but I doubt it. It'll be of a comparable quality though.

SOLD Vintage P pickup from a 1982 Westone Thunder 1A. Fully functioning. Decent condition. Adjustable polepieces. Comes with original copper base plate. Nice quality, 80's Japanese, Alnico magnet Precision pickup. Treat yourself for £19 posted to your door within the EU.
I bought the TRBX 504 from Hamfist a short while ago
I do miss that one a fair bit. I just got so wrapped up in vintage Jap stuff, I felt the Yam was just lacking in a bit of character (and by "character" I mean the sort that can only be achieved through decades). As for the Yamaha's tone and playability..... Stunning. Perhaps stupidly, that wasn't enough for me at the time.

Do not use Parcelforce to ship musical instruments
hamfist replied to chriswareham's topic in General Discussion
Moral of the story .... 1/ don't ever pay extra for their insurance. 2/ Pack absolutely bulletproof 3/ then put another layer of packing and another box on. 4/ All couriers handle packages in a disgraceful manner, so simply use the cheapest. It's worked for me. I have saved many hundreds, maybe thousands in not paying shipping insurance over the years and never had an issue. Amps, cabs, basses, guitars. Luck is a factor I'm sure. On the day they do manage to damage one of my packages, I'll pay for it out of the money I've saved by never paying insurance. This won't work for everyone, but it's worked for me. It's all very well and good saying that you'll never ship and that you'll always specify collection, but for those of us who don't live near major conurbations or fairly centrally in the country, that really does reduce our potential customer base enormously. -
Ideally both audio and video should also be recorded using a mobile phone ! Yes, I agree with every point. It's a bit of a pet hate of mine also.

New Kit Richardson video & single 'All Heart No Brains'
hamfist replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
Quite like that. She has a really distinctive voice. Good tune etc etc. -
THe only strings I have been impressed with are the cheap Legacy sets from StringsDirect. For my needs they are as good as any nickel roundwounds, from any maker I have tried. Punchy, consistent, good lifespan. I have them on all my basses. And the price is the most impressive thing !!
-
As you are discovering, in the world of PA you have to look closely at specs to be able to make any meaningful comparison between some cabs/amps. Certain makers, especially at the cheaper end of the market, are clever at trying to manipulate specs to make their amps/cabs appear more powerful than they really are. In your position, I'd go with the pair of RCF cabs, depending on price and bearing in mind the cost of the new cabs which will include a warranty. The RCF's will give a better sound, be more reliable, and you have no need for full, solid bottom end as you are only putting vocals through them. You can add a sub later if you need or wish to. QTX is cheap and cheerful, and made down to a price. Also, please bear in mind I have no direct experience of either of these cabs or setups. But I have a fair amount of experience with other PA and am fairly well aware of the market at the moment. In their price-range, IMO, the RCF ARTs are hard to beat.

Where can i buy a DiMarzio DP123L Model J (bridge pup)?
hamfist replied to dave_bass5's topic in Accessories and Misc
IMO, the Dimarzio Ultrajazz (DP148) is a better match in a PJ, due to it's higher output and more bottom end than the model J (much better to balance with the P) . Its a Great noiseless-J pickup in it's own right IMO. I also happen to have one black bridge position ULtrajazz for sale at the moment too ! (see Access. & misc items for sale). If I wasn't completely into EMG's at the moment it's the Ultrajazz I would use in a passive PJ setup. -
Ah, I was assuming that the budget for an "amp" meant "amp" not "amp and cab, or combo". I'd say that neither the Genz contour amp or TC BG combos have a hope of coping with a loud 2 guitar hard rock band, which is what the OP has given us the impression is his new playing environment. And I'm assuming here that you will have no PA support for your bass. If you only need stage monitoring and your bass will be going through FoH, that's a whole new kettle of fish, and a Genz COntour combo or TC BG combo might be fine for that. My suggestion of an MB500 stands for £200-£300 loud, light amp. Now, if you're wanting cabs to go in that budget too, you are wasting your time. Start saving or sell your Sadowsky.

Thoughts on my speaker configurations. (Series/Parallel)
hamfist replied to Raslee's topic in Amps and Cabs
I think you're gonna struggle to get 3 of those cabs to all be @ the same volume if they're all rated differently re Ωs.
Yes, this is it. if a certain ohm load is the same as another load, they will receive the same power from the amp, if run in parallel. So, Rasta, in one of your configurations to make a 6x10, there is one 8 ohm load (made of 4 x 10's) and another 8 ohm load made of 2 x 10's. So, with the same impedances, these two loads will receive equal power from the amp. So the 8 ohm 2 x10 will receive a lot more power per speaker than the 8 ohm 4 x10. This won't necessarily be a problem, unless you are pushing the speakers to the extremes of their ability. The best option IMO would be to make a 6x10 2 ohm stack. That way you can have a 4 ohm 4x10 load (two 8 ohm 2x10's in parallel) and then the 700W 4 ohm 2x10 as the other 4 ohm load, so when run in parallel, both 4 ohm loads will give you a total 2 ohm load. The higher rated 2x10 should have a better chance at coping. That way the 700W 2x10 would be taking half the Nemesis' full output (maximum of 650W at 2 ohm, so each 4 ohm load in parallel would receive 325W (of thereabouts) maximum. IMO, there is a reasonable chance of this working well at volume, although it all depends just how bassy you have the signal for your reggae stuff. Some cabs/speakers are much better at coping with high volume low frequencies than others. It's not just about wattage. -
Oh my goodness, that top horn is absolutely revolting.
.... it's usually two out of three when it comes to loud, lightweight, low price.
+1 A small light amp should be attainable for £300. Go used, and a GK MB500 will be perfect, for example. Loud as hell. Or a Markbass LMII or III. Cabs will be a bigger problem, where the loud/light/cheap triad is the most obvious. Sounds like your main problem will be getting the speaker area to cope with high volume, as I'm guessing you won't be able to afford the newer high displacement speaker-loaded cabs like Barefaced etc.
-
Ah, yes, if it's the one I'm thinking of, it was a good price ! The advent of the Gen 3 series seems to have been particularly unkind to values of the Gen 2's. Doesn't change the fact that the Gen 2's are no less excellent than they were. Just means that they are available to those of us on lesser budgets Good luck my friend ! I almost considered going for it myself. Just think I'd miss the tweeter a bit too much in the end.

Just one man's experience here, but I bought an EV ZLX-12P active cab. It quickly developed a buzz/fuzz type of sound, but only when the cab was on it's side (in monitor position). The first runs of this model have something of a reputation for having a speaker lead touch the cone, which is what I assume was happening to mine. I sent it back for a warranty fix. It returned back, a month later full of loose rattling buts/bolts whatever !!! Not impressed with EV here. Thankfully Andertons were very reasonable and gave me a no quibble full refund.

Only thing that bugs me about them is that the P pickup is significantly nearer the neck than a Precision. Different tone. It's a pity. The Jaguar shape is my favourite bass shape, but for those looking for a P tone, it's just not quite right, for what I'm wanting anyway.
