I used to own an RV4 which, to be honest, was pretty cheaply made. The neck and fretwork was particularly poor. There were various reports of other Retrovibe basses of that era having very poorly aligned pickup routes, or simply inaccurately placed pickup routes. THings may have improved in the Retrovibe camp since then, but if my experience was anything to go by, then I'd rather be spending my money on a new Squier at the moment. Or even better on a used bass. You can pickup some really pro basses for £200-£300 these days used.

The very best cure to both hum and pickup balancing in a PJ setup is to get a high output hum-cancelling J pickup. The Dimarzio Ultra Jazz is perfect.

I bought a tightdrive online. Tried it when it arrived and sent it right back. Sounded awful to me.
I bought these files and used them this morning on the offending nut. Looks like it's done the job and my bass plays much better on the first 3 frets.
Well done that man.

I'll add that I run all my dirt through a clean blend, so if I didn't have that facility already, I'd definitely consider a clean blend as an extra if buying a new knightfall.

Just received one of these from Tom yesterday and rarely do I get quite so impressed by a piece of kit. This is quite simply a stunning overdrive/distortion pedal. It is so transparent (ie. no tonal changes to your bass sound), simply adds a great, natural drive. I didn't go for any of the extras that Tom can add, but the simple, basic pedal. All at a very reasonable price. I must have tried over 100 different drive pedals, maybe more, on bass over the years and none have been as transparent and simply as straightforwardly simple and perfect to use. So a well done to Tom from me. IMO, he has achieved what many, many highly funded pedal-makers over the years have failed to do. I thoroughly recommend the Knightfall. I predict this will become a classic pedal.

Not sure what tone you're really looking for, but I am very impressed with my MB500. If you're anywhere near me, you are welcome to try it out. Personally, I'd rather go for an MB500 and have a choice of "character" and dirt from pedals, rather than be committed to whatever the Fusion adds (for the extra money it would take to get one). I'm just not convinced that pre-amp tubes add anything that you can't get from SS devices these days. Power tubes, now that's a different matter.

Sold a pedal to Graeme. Great communication. Easy, easy deal. Top chap.

Logic suggests to use a limiter last in the chain if you have other effects that could generate there own volume or low-frequency spikes. Basically, stick your limiter after anything that could cause a volume or low-frequency spike, whether it be your bass playing or a filter effect or whatever.

SOLD This is a 3 month old (from brand new - receipt to prove)) new old stock, original version of the BBE Optostomp, which is nothing like the current versions. Ovnilab review the original version very highly, stating ... "I rated the original one very very highly because it was built like a tank, and had clean tone with no losses, smooth natural action, and very little noise" and I have to agree it's a fine compressor. And the output levels are great on this one. FUll review at .... http://www.ovnilab.com/reviews/optostomp.shtml Two main controls ... volume and compression, with a 15dB input pad switch. Uses the standard boss-type PSU, or a battery. This compressor works superbly with passive pickups. However, over the last few weeks I have fallen in love with EMG pickups and I am finding I just don't need or want compression with EMGs. So if you want this nice, simple, high quality compressor, it's yours for £60 posted within the UK. Probably the last of it's kind in as new condition, I'd guess.
I am definitely not hearing any scooped tone in the NX2...
me neither. I'd say it actually has quite a full and present midrange.

Mine has the Made in Mexico sticker. on the rear panel. I'm very happy with the cab. Couldn't give a monkeys which country it was made in.

Mine came today. A quick test in the house reveals that I like it ! It's not ultimately quite as loud or as deep (although that may change as it beds in) as my 2x12 and 1x15 rig but the one cab solution appeals to me. I've decided I'll keep it. Will rehearse it with the band tonight.

[s]Gallien Krueger Neo 115 MkIII. Only a couple of months old. Absolutely immaculate. Only 18 kgs !! 8 ohm, 400W RMS. Great , great cab. £230, collection only from the Southampton area.[/s] SOLD [s]Also TC Electronic RS210 cab. About 6 months old. Only used about a dozen times in total. Comes with the proper TC Electronic cover. 8 ohm, 400W RMS. Great quality cab. These cabs have a very tough but fairly easily marked surface and hence this cab has a few minor grazes on it. Nothing that notices too much though. They all have them. Again, £230, collection only from the Southampton area[/s]. SALE AGREED These two work very, very well as a pair to make a loud 4 ohm rig. Only for sale as I have moved to a single 4 ohm cab solution. OK, pics ... The minefield that comes from being in a band
hamfist replied to JamesBass's topic in General Discussion
I've no interest in playing covers as I play for fun not my living,
Lol. I love this assumption that it would be impossible to play covers for fun. I suspect this is not what you really meant though. -
The minefield that comes from being in a band
hamfist replied to JamesBass's topic in General Discussion
It's an interesting point that many of you make, that in your experience bands work best with a strong leader, who is also the final decision maker. I could imagine that to be true, certainly with most original bands, who do need a creative focus. I have not been in enough originals bands though to really have a considered opinion on it. Same with cover bands, I don't know ? Certainly for me, it matters hugely what material we play and if I didn't have a strong say in it, things could so easily veer off in a direction I wasn't happy with. I'd then have little option except to leave if I wasn't happy with the material (obviously also depending on how flexible the "leader" was prepared to be). My current (covers) band works on an absolutely democratic basis, and the basis of the band has been together for many years. But the whole system doesn't work if even just one member either won't accept the democracy or won't input on it. I have just left another band where it just didn't workout because one member wouldn't "buy in" to the democracy. He just simply wouldn't take part in any discussion and ultimately acted like an anchor dragging behind the band, stopping it moving anywhere. I'll say that I far prefer being in a truly democratic band, but I do acknowledge that it is not an easy thing to establish and really needs the right people. -
This one? http://www.hardwirep...n/products/cm-2 Looks cool!
Yes, in the early days, I believe they started to call it the tube distortion, but quickly changed it to the Tube Overdrive. Even on that page, the picture is of the "tube distortion", yet all the writing is about the "tube overdrive". Whatever, it's a stonking pedal. Unbelievably good for the money.
Inertia has a Knighfall circuit and it is indeed very transparent with the tone knob, great variation and for me it is usable in all positions
Excellent. I've just got to be patient for a short while now, as Tom is away for a few days.
