Hi all, Sorry for the skinny stringed thing, but frankly, I do trust bass players advice more π Iβm looking for some advice on a truss rod issue with a Schecter Jeff Loomis 7-string I recently picked up. I could return it via EBAY, but I do love these guitars and they are fairly rare these days so want to get some opinions before making a decision. I could be worrying about absolutely nothing as well. I am not 100% on what it's supposed to look like, so please tell me if so! I feel the truss rod nut has sunk noticeably into the wood behind it. In truth I have never dealt/noticed this sort of thing before, and I could be worrying about nothing. So please inform me if that is the case! When I tighten the nut, it moves deeper and adds tension, which makes it hard to judge how close the truss rod actually is to its real adjustment limit. I have maybe a half turn or so from its current correct position for 9-52's at half a step down before it max's out This is with the Truss Rod with most relief. Truss rod when straight with 9-52 strings. Right now the guitar is tuned half-step down with a light 9 to 52 set. Even with light strings, the rod feels like it is not far from its upper range, which is what made me look closer. The compression could be masking the rodβs true behaviour, so it is not clear whether the rod is genuinely near its limit or simply compressing wood. My plan is to go from a standard 7 string 9-52 set to a 6 string 10-52 Skinny Top Heavy Bottom set with a .70 gauge low string for the low B (This is the standard setup for Jeff Loomis back in the day), but I want to make sure the neck and truss rod are healthy before adding more tension. Iβd appreciate thoughts on whether the cavity looks normally worn or genuinely crushed, whether a shim repair is appropriate, and whether anything suggests the neck wood itself might be unstable. In truth I have never dealt/noticed this sort of thing before, and I could be worrying about nothing. Cheers! PS: One final point for context. When I back the truss rod nut out, there is not a lot of space behind it. The cavity does not have much room for inserting a shim of meaningful thickness. To rebuild the seat properly, I may need to remove a small amount of wood at the bottom of the cavity to create a flat surface for the shim. That is a permanent modification, but I am willing to do it if it is the correct mechanical solution. I would appreciate opinions on whether this approach is appropriate given the condition shown in the photos.

2025 SE Bass Basheroonie! Sunday 9/11/25 *CONFIRMED*
Shockwave replied to NancyJohnson's topic in Events
I might try and peek my head above the parapet for the first time in over a decade for this. Though much of it depends on Public Transport from London Bridge and if someone has a spare space next to their rig so I can bring my Stas Pokotylo Monarch bass. -
Tony Franklin made quite the career out of it π Even unamplified, Yngwie appears to be intonating quite well.

Hamer Blitz in Zebra finish @MacDaddy bought it from me, but failed to give me heads up when he went on to sell it π π Would love to have that back some day. -
I was unaware that it had those issues, so it was an existing condition.

I throw myself to the mercy of the court for I have sinned (Again). I have yet again breached Tier 2. Another Jeff Loomis Signature model guitar, but the newer one (I bought the older one in my initial Tier 2 breach). I presume that the effect of breaching Tier 2 does not cumulate into a tier 1 offense? However I may have also committed a Tier 1 offense. My one and only bass has a very stiff tuner which really struggled to tune to pitch and sounds very grindy, to the point it was easily going to break very soon and I have auditions next week. Luckily a fellow Basschat member @MungoBass was selling the correct tuners required (Replacing the exact same Machineheads I already have), though in gold. So I purchased replacements from him, I didn't want to risk the tuner breaking on me whilst at the audition. Not only that but the original Chrome Bridge is missing the very essential Locking screws on all but one of the saddles. A purchase was made for an exact replacement bridge.... Which also just happens to be gold. Will the jury look kindly upon my predicament?

I think a good attempt should be made at trying to acquire one for free first. Anyone got something in a parts bin somewhere?

I have failed on Tier 2 I am afraid. New Project and required a 7 String guitar to play Nevermore songs. Managed to snag this second hand old school Schecter Jeff Loomis Sig. As well as a 10-52 string set and .70 single string to tune down to B Flat. https://www.pmtonline.co.uk/pre-owned-schecter-loomis-7-fr-trans-red-055384 To be fair, its a pretty good price despite the ding in the finish. These are getting harder to come by... Though the new Jeff Sig model is also very very tempting... However I am still in for tier 1!

Actually. My bass is not string thru. You can have either with this bridge.

I have the same bridge. I just removed the locking bolts altogether. They are pointless as the bridge saddles are very stable without them.

I had a very near miss. Was going to buy a G&L JB-2 in Pink for Β£300 at Andertons. But some scrote got to it before I did! Still in by the skin of my teeth.
