1. I'm a self confessed Warwick fan - always liked their basses, and learning to play bass as a teenager they were always the basses that I would tell myself "One day I'll have one of those" - well, now I've currently got: Corvette Hot Rod 5'er - great Warwick tone but very, very, very bright - tonally and visually Dolphin Pro 2 - stonking bass, definitely has the Warwick growl Corvette Bubinga - typical Warwick with funky midrange Fretless Corvette Proline - great passive fretless mwah sound Although my go to bass at the moment is my Spector Euro 5 LX ! ...... Completely agree with Warwickhunt - the classic Warwick tone is the Stuart Zender sound on the early Jamiroquai albums
2. Reading Bass Clef is really all about practicing it regularly. I'm now trying to avoid TAB like the plague - I think like a lot of 'shortcuts' it actually works out to be a longer way around. I use the first 20 to 30 min of my practice sessions as a warm up by reading and playing Bass Clef - I find it warms up both the eyes for reading and also the hands. Try to find bass clef only with no TAB - I've even cut strips of card of varying sizes to cover the TAB on TAB transcriptions that I have! The Major's Bootcamp in the Theory section is a great resource to work through. I feel I've made good progress on reading the dots but like pietruska I also struggle with reading rhythmns - I'd be interested to hear people's techniques to learn these better.
3. First 'proper' gig was Pantera, September 1994. Manchester Apollo - in the 'seated' section. Absolutely superb, Dimebag one of my favourite guitarists, Vinnie Paul also a favourite drummer of mine, Phil Anselmo great front man and Rex solid as ever on bass. I particularly remember the atmosphere and raw power of the band.
4. Clearing out some duplicates that I have so: Up for sale I have: 2 x Copies of Jaco Pastorius Modern Electric Bass - Both complete with their CD. 6.
I don't suppose anyone has the notation for Anthrax's cover of Got the Time? It was in Guitarist when they still had a bass techniques column, so that's going back some years but if anyone has a copy that they could scan or photocopy that would be grand. It's the solo I can't work out by ear, just need more practice!
Reading this thread and I thought I'm sure I've got this transcription - and indeed I do! From Guitarist Magazine August 1993. I can't scan until I'm back in work on Tuesday - I can take some photographs of the pages in the meantime if that helps? Let me know (and if anyone else wants as well) and I'll be more than happy to send it on.
7. Bought some strings and a gigbag from Houtoe (Chris). Simple transaction, goods as described, delivered in good time and well packaged. Would be happy to deal with again.
8. Thanks for the comments guys, hoping this would be of interest to somebody. I am happy for trade offers on basses as well, plus or minus cash adjustments.
9. Thanks for these wal4string. Always good to have more transcriptions in notation to work through
10. I recently bought a Spector Bass from Biscuit. Biscuit is well known on the UK bass scene but doesn't frequent these parts too often. Links to the man himself below. http://www.biscuitandbass.com/ http://www.samsontech.com/artists/biscuit/ http://www.deanmarkley.com/EndArtists/Biscuit.shtml Great bass, great price, great man. Excellent communications - went over and above the call of duty to keep me up to date on progress. An absolute pleasure to do the deal from start to finish. Would highly recommend Biscuit for any future deals and would be more than happy to deal with again.
11. Cheers Steve, it's go to be worth a try as a project upgrade bass - I've completely no experienced in upgrading etc but if I'm as useless at it as DIY then it will be interesting to say the least. Thanks for the link 'Ghost Rider'
12. Sorry 'SlapbassSteve' - that was me! I'm half expecting the seller to say that the BIN price was supposed to be £100.00 not £10.00. Not sure where I stand, what the implications are of this etc - but I've been on the lookout for a 'project' 4 string. He also has a Behringer amp listed for sale as well with a start price of £50.00 (no BIN).
13. I don't really know much about the Bongo, but the general opinion is that it is very versatile. In terms of the sound there are too many factors other than the bass that influence the sound (new strings / type of strings, amps, onboard pre amps / external pre amps / pick or fingers / cables /amps / technique / ability, down to very small things like pickup height / action.......etc etc etc). If I were you - based purely on sound - I wouldn't change bass without doing a direct comparison between different basses and being sure that I was equally comparing basses and making all the other factors l've listed above as equal as possible.
14. Ah, OK Czech Republic may be a little too far ! . I'm not really a pick player, but I've just had a quick go with a pick and yes it deals with this great for the classic metal with a pick sound. Yes - I would describe it as both bright and fat as you have asked. There is plenty of bottom end, as my earlier comment the EQ is (in my opinion) a little temperamental. The bass EQ does seem to as you turn the control give a little more bass, then a little more bass and then a lot more bass all at once. There is not a great deal of information about on the Corvette Hot Rod as you mentioned in an earlier post. Bass Guitar Magazine did a review in issue 20 (I assume for the 4 string version?) - i have tried to track down a copy but not been able to. Maybe a fellow BC'er can scan and email the review if anyone has a copy.
