1. Hi all I've been gigging for a while with an EBS rig, HD350, neo 212 and 210 (mix and match to taste ) it is a damn fine rig if I do say so myself. Lately though I've been thinking about trying something a little more ' punchy tubey sounding' (can't be arsed with the real thing though) and with that low mid growl that goes well with the rock stuff which I mostly play. I've had a look at a few Youtube demos of various stuff, but they seem to be mostly comprised of highly talented, slappitty tappity types playing solo (good luck to them btw!) and so bear little relation to what I do. Which is banging out the lines finger style with a couple of guitarists churning away either side. I know I'm not alone - there's plenty like me out there. So, real world, pub rock giggers what have you got that delivers the growl? I've got various pedals e.g. VT Bass that'll get me there with my current rig, but ideally I like to get that growly stuff from the amp itself and just use modulation type effects. The GK MB Fusion series looks well regarded and like it'd do the job - but the videos I've seen for this (and other similar contenders) all sound a bit thin, hence the post! Cheers all Jason
2. I got a Yamaha bb1025x for £527 about 3 months ago. Had to wait about 8 weeks for it and I kept thinking they'd up the price as it was about £250 less than everywhere else. They kept in contact re a delay in arrival and maintained the price. Very happy here.
3. Hi - got the below from Sandberg - Techie working from memory, and it works! sure the wiring is different, but the Delano wiring diagrams help to identify the correct wires. Standard wiring of a Delano humbucker is this: Yellow + blank – ground Green + brown – split White – hot If I got that correct in memory, you will have to wire it like this: brown + blank – ground White + Yellow – split Green – hot
4. Thanks BassBunny! I've no idea which diagram it is - I'm pleased with myself that I've just realised the box is the switch Fortunately - drummer on hand with soldering skills!
5. Hi all First up - my electrical knowledge is limited to fitting plugs and changing batteries. Fortunately, my drummer is a techy! On the Sanderg California there is a J and a MM pick up near the bridge - as standard the front coil of the MM can be isolated into single coil mode and then you have jazz configuration. I want the rear coil (closest to bridge) to isolate instead for a bit more toppy bite - we've swapped a couple of wires (green and white) but now the switch doesn't activate the MM configuration and the bass is just in single coil, but with the rear most pick up in play (so we are half right! ) Sandberg referred to the Delano guide and there are a few people of the Sandberg Players FB site who are also keen to try this. Anyone out there made the amendment or any techie gurus with bright ideas where we went wrong? http://www.delano.de/uploads/tx_smtdelano/delano-installation-guide_55.pdf Cheers gang! Jason
6. Think I'll spring for a pair of these - my hearing isn't bad and I should keep it that way. Couple of questions about options :- Grips? What are they? Corded or not? Colour - what do you guys reckon I suppose clear is the obvious subtle choice, or is it better to go bling in case you drop them?
7. Fair enough! Thanks for the input - stops me going off on another tangent at least
8. Hi all I have an EBS HD350 - great amp, lucky me . It's 350w and runs down to 2 ohms. I sometimes use with two 500w 4 ohm cabs, EBs Neo 212 and 210 - sounds sweet. Still good with just one but just loses a little extra chutzpah. So, school me Basschat - I've heard of dummy loads but know little. Is it possible to plug something in that would give that full 350w 2ohm goodness into just one cab? Cheers Jason P.S. Apologies is this is an electronically daft question.
9. Hi all I'm joining another band - it's the typical pub rock covers scenario. If you are from this area then it's with the two guitarists from Bouncing Of Concrete (well established popular local covers band) who are stepping back to have a less hectic gigging schedule. Good connections, gear and a cracking free rehearsal space - good players (apart from the bassist!) and good guys it seems! One or two gigs a month max -usual classic pub rock/indy stuff but looking to bring in some more modern stuff too. I'm 48, I reckon youngest is mid 30s. Anyone you know out there? - Must be a good standard of singer and able to front a lively band. I don't think these guys will want anyone that isn't the full package. Think they'd prefer a bloke - but I reckon if the right gal came along with a belter of a voice and the stagecraft then who knows ( I know one of these but she lives too far away -damn it !!) With the right person I think it'd get up to gigging pretty quick as we already know a lot of shared material Cheers Jason
10. Bought Harry's B3 - and all the above feedback is correct! Cheers!!
11.
A bypass looper is great for this, as the signal is unaffected until you kick in the effects loop. Another advantage is that you can go from clean to a combination of pedals in one stomp.
+1 - I don't know why this doesn't seem to be a more common approach. I stick all my effects in a cheap true bypass looper so most of the time I play just straight into the amp. Means that you can 'preload' several pedals then turn them all on or off in one stomp - for instance I open one song with a big single synthy, fuzzy, flanged note using 3 pedals then need to instantly cut it and come in 'normal'.
12. We've got a Ui16 - it's a learning curve alright (previously had an old Peavey powered box - so quite a step up!) and we had a couple of moments of panic when we couldn't get connected, subsequently think this may have been 'user error' though Really good quality mixer though, sounds great and just seems to do everything you could need.
13. PM'd
14. Brightlingsea - centre of the universe!! Cheers for the lists both of you, a lot on there I don't know so will hit the Youtube later! Good stuff!
15.
Ha, our singer quit the band after we introduced Slither to the set, quoting 'musical differences' as the reason. He knew his time was up basically!!
Top tune that - maybe we should a thread of Songs to Get Band Members to quit ;-) Looks like you are near me Ricky - which band do you play in?
16.
Bohemian like you Monster the Automatic Golden Touch Razorlight Gold On The Ceiling Black Keys Local Boy Stereophonics Take Me Our Franz Ferdinand Loads by the Killers, Kaiser Chiefs, Chilli Peppers, Stereophonics (Greenday, Manics,Blur and Oasis if you stretch back to the 90's) Actually the Britpop/Indie period in the 90's, 00's was a bit of a golden era for us covers bands.
Cheers - yes, I suppose I'm trying the pick the 'new breed' of songs that are post this period - don't get me wrong this stuff is all good solid pub rock material.
17.
we do ain't no rest for the wicked in this style.. works well.. https://www.youtube....h?v=JCQ0WTsmybA
I've not heard this before - like it, is it well known? BSC and Royal Blood good shouts too (thanks all for the input!)
18. Cheers- yep, last 10 years I reckon . That's my kid induced musical blind spot!
19. Good shout! Cheers ☺
20. Hi all I'm just joining a new rock covers band - seem like a good bunch of guys, know their stuff and we already have a shared arsenal of 'standard' tracks between us. Loooking through them I'm struck that there's not much modern stuff. So what's your tips for really good, pub rock numbers of a more contemporary slant? This band is just aiming to go out and give the punters a good night - nothing more. So all killer, no filler and integrity be damned 😉 Any versions from other genres that cross over well? Cheers J
21. I got a Mooer Tender October from EBay - via China about £60. Does the octave up and down plus level of the dry signal. Octave up sounds 'different ' in that it's a bit artificial- kind of think they all do a bit. Don't think you can get them in the UK. Might help though it doesn't have wet and dry outputs so you might need some other way of blending it in
22. You might be interested in this - also a bargain, I know I got one at a few quid less £527. But £534 brand new. Looks great in black (I have a white Bb1024x too and I think teh black edges it in the looks dept.) https://www.bax-shop.co.uk/right-handed-bass-guitar/yamaha-bb1025x-5-string-electric-bass-guitar-black
23. I use one of these Nux PG1 jobbies - only plastic but works well for me. Whether it'd stand up as a proper pre-amp, I'm not sure, but I have plugged it straight into a mixer and PA, it was ok. I like having the ability to add a few basic effects built in and the tuner is handy too if travelling light. Cheaper on Ebay. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Technote-PG-1-Effects-Processor-Metronome/dp/B0041D81H6
24. Going through a similar list myself - have a female fronted band and I think we need to go 'more female' in song choice. A few I like that haven't seen mentioned En Vogue - Free Your Mind Abba stuff - we do Mamma Mia based on a cover on Youtube by a guy called Scott Gaskin, that goes down really well Celebrity Skin - Hole Barracuda - Heart (love playing this one - check out the Alice in Chains with Gretchen Wilson version for added heavy)
25. Sorry - no idea - I just plug it in
