1.
£60! I never find bargains like that!
Spotted it on Gumtree, down in Kilmarnock. The lad had bought it new, stuck some flats on it, and really didn't get on with it. I stuck new rounds on, tweaked the truss rod to suit, and there it was. That sound. My only complaint is this. Obviously, these look cooler with a more 'live in' look. I'd never intentionally 'relic' an instrument, but I do sometimes leave it lying around in the hope it might pick up a little bit of 'life' about it. Regrettably, the finish is so hard and thick, it still looks mint.
2. I have a Harley Benton JB40-FL, the poor man's bass of doom I call it. It makes 'that' sound, now I have the right rounds on it and the action just nice. Havign previously a MIM Jazz, I wouldn't ever swap back and I wouldn't play or sound any better with any other bass. (I bought mine S/H for £60).
3. My band 'supported' Yes in a Similar fashion in Germany earlier this year. Us David Cross Band Ray Wilson Yes. I'll dine out on it forever.
4.
That wood is stunning!
I certainly lucked in there ! Heartily recommended purchase.
5. Fancied something new and nice looking for some upcoming gigs this year. Made in the Mayones Factory in Gdansk for Musicstore. I think I lucked in with the wood on this one.
6. I voted other. It's complex. As of today, I'm up to 3 basses again. The dearest one is a slightly battered version of a British built bass, a Status. The other two are a USA built bass - a Peavey Foundation, and a far east built Harley Benton fretless Jazz copy. I love them all for different reasons. Two of the three are both beaters and also quality brands. The one in the best cosmetic condition is the new low end bass. I'd hate to mark it, it's not a beater. For a recent gig- the gig of my life - I hired. It was cheaper than flying one of the above to the gig. To those of you with the collection of high end basses, I feel your pain.
7. That group will be the death of me... My Status came off there as well as my effects processor and one of my amps, and my acoustic and electric guitars. I'm going to put some dodgy posts up with no prices just so Jimmy Devlin bans me.
8. This may be an older one he's playing, but I've wanted one since I heard this dude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3yUniSTH1w I'm also taken with the maple and black combo.
9. Facebook has its detractors, but I've snagged one or two gems on the selling groups. This requires a little work to tidy it up, but it seems a fine thing indeed and has a lovely range of great tones. It's a bit minging, but well worth cleaning up, I'd say. 10. It seems I must just keep looking then
11. I ended up hiring. £55 for a Jazz Bass Plus V. Well worth it.
12. I was £55 from Bauder Audio in Pennsylvania. That was delivered to the gig and I had it available to me for the three days of the festival. I took it out of the case on the first day, it played lovely, and I left it alone after that. I then grabbed it again at load in to warm it up in my hands, played the gig, then handed it back. I'll maybe contact Bauder and ask for a price to buy the thing.
13. Anyone have / had one ? I had the use of a hired one last weekend. (flying my own bass there and back would have cost £130, this was £55 and was beautifully set up with fresh strings). I now want one and it seems they're quite rare. This had lace sensor pickups and Kubicki electronics. Made around 1990-92 I think, in the USA. Looked sort of like this. 14. Did a gig with this last night. It was fabulous. This band, we do Sledgehammer, so a fretless J is a handy thing to have. It's coming on a trip across the pond with me next week for a gig. I think we'l have fun together.
15. I love the careless alignment of the body join, the way it completely fails to run parallel to the general alignment of the bass. Just like my Harley Benton.
16. I'd have had it in a moment, but if I'm picking up a 4 string fretted bass, it's my very un Status like Status energy. Wooden, with a headstock and the most magnificently playable neck. Ever since I saw the video of your man playing one on youtube, I need no convincing of how good they are. I'd just never use it. 17. Have you seen the black Foundation on the FB group. Central Scotland Glasgow / Edinburgh one ? £140
18. I know, and I'd love it. I'm officially maxed out in basses right now and there's nothing I'd like to get rid of to make space for it. How you guys with multiple basses do it is beyond me.
19. Someone local selling a Foundation, and has been for a while. He's trying to get £140 and had no takers. This is a US built bass.
20. Session 100w combo thing. graphic EQ and a 12" speaker. Sounded lovely at home. The minute you took it anywhere else, it was pointless. Thin, weedy, useless. I thought that 100w meant that was enough. I was yet to realise the importance of the speakers at that point. Ashdown ABM300 into matching 8x10" cab. Mud. You shouldn't have to do that much to the EQ to stop it sounding terrible, and the sheer logic of the EQ section defies all sense. Good or bad.
21. If the neck is anything like my Energy, it's the finest I've ever played.
22. I can't play a P bass to save my life. I hear someone else playing one and it sounds fantastic. Then I pick it up and it's just rubbish. Or rather, I am. Probably defines me as a failure if I can't get a decent noise out of a P bass.
23. I've never been at all taken with the idea of a gig bag. They may stop a bass from scratching, but I reckon that's about all. Mechanical damage is still a distinct possibility and you certainly wouldn't load one into a van anything other than very very carefully. I've always used a hard case, but those annoy me too. The bass isn't always held securely, can rattle about inside, and they take up so much space. I think I'm happy with the compromise I've now settled on. These poly foam cases - or similar. http://www.gear4music.com/Guitar-and-Bass/Bass-Guitar-Foam-Case-by-Gear4music/C87?origin=product-ads&campaign=PLA+Shop+-+GENERIC&adgroup=GENERIC&medium=vertical_search&network=google&merchant_id=1279443&product_id=15847d1&product_country=GB&product_partition_id=144462915199&gclid=CjwKEAiApOq2BRDoo8SVjZHV7TkSJABLe2iDe2YkxrqAeYqQrek4Y0TbIoIEQu-5nema7IDbY291cxoCS_vw_wcB The bass can't rattle around, won't get scratched, and if the case takes a whack, the case is highly likely to absorb it. More so than a badly padded hard case which might just pass all of the impact to the bass, undiminished. I won't be stacking bass bins on top, but I reckon these work well.
24.
Really? I've always thought cheap = heavyweight.... My old Kay from 79/80 weighed a ton
Fair point. I had a strat copy a few years back, and the neck dive was phenomenal because the neck weighed more than the body which seemed light enough to be balsa.
