1. I'd never really thought about bass weight much before. It's never caused me a huge issue, but now I have two or three here, it's become quite apparent the difference in them. Status Energy 4 string headed. 3.49kg or 7.7 lbs Squier Pro-Tone 5 string 4.32kg or 9.5 lbs Harley Benton jb40 fl 5.01 kg or 11.04 lbs I'm most surprised at the weight of the Harley Benton as I've been most used to cheapies being built from wood which was a bit flyweight. I'm glad the fretless will be played mostly sitting down. Have two longer sets coming up soon and the Five will be getting the vote for that, I reckon.
2. This plays and sounds every bit as well as my now sold mex Jazz Fretless. Sold the Mex for £350, bought this for £60. There will be no scratchplate. Tort or other. If J*** didn't need one, etc.. ;-)
3. Well, this is a rather obvious choice. I'm a sucker for this sort of thing and as if they aren't inexpensive enough, ( £116.66 new, plus delivery ) I bought this one second hand locally. Barely touched far less played. Looks like it should, plays like it should. Quite taken with it.
4.
I dont really regret selling anything. They are all just tools to enable me to do my job. Apart from a 1974 Jazz which I sold for peanuts in 1995 before the internet told me what they are now worth!
Aye. see my similar post for details...
5. I have this interview on Thursday. Not hugely looking forward to it.
6.
Well, just finished our set and one song used very heavily accentuated mwahs with chorus... most people`s reaction was positive...
Aye, that's generally the case. In my acoustic band, (Piano, some guitars, a thing called an Emerald Amicus 12, and me on bass) I use fretless. It lets me do the lyrical sort of 'motifs'. It generally goes down very well indeed. "Do more of that sort of thing" generally encourages you onwards. I'll be honest though, everything I do is a very poor man's pastiche of what I imagine J*** might have done had he but 1% of his talent. I'll no excuse this at all.
7. I'm sure this isn't anyone in here. Sure added value. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CUSTOM-5-STRING-BASS-GUITAR-VINTAGE-RETRO-HARLEY-BENTON-PJ-5-HTR-DELUXE-SERIES-/291690211532?hash=item43ea1768cc:g:jbQAAOSwuYVWolID
8. Shouldn't have sold my... 1969 Fender Jazz Bass - Daphne Blue. Jaydee Supernatural, yes, a Mark King. Bought new, around 1985 or so. Wal Pro Bass. Status S2 Status S1 Yamaha TRB5 Steinberger JV Squier Jazz - bought new in 1982.
9. Hope not. I've hitched my wagon to the Markbass thing. Still planning on another extension cab. Not because I actually need one, as such.
10. I'm often accused of playing fretless when I'm playing a fretted bass. I should probably be insulted but I take it as a compliment.
11. I like a little light delay and using a certain style of vibrato which rolls around the finger which never actually moves on the string. The nett result is a natural chorus effect. And yes, I do play harmonics quite a bit on fretless. With the same delay and the neck wobble effect. (Hold the upper horn with the plucking hand and wobble the bass back and forward gently) that also gives a natural chorus effect. That's how I do it. And I like it.
12. It's rather lovely. Virtually mint condition with hardly a blemish on it. The scratching on the finish is no more than a polish with some cutting compound would easily fix. I have have pretty large hands and long fingers, so the wide fingerboard is no hardship. The single passive tone control is genuinely useful over all of its travel and cuts the treble very deep. Far more aggressively than my Fender did and more progressively. Playability is not quite up to the standard of my Status, but I've done no setup as yet. It could use a 1/4 turn on the truss rod to sort out the relief to where I think it should be. My Status is super low action and has a fabulous neck, so I'm not sure I'll get it to that standard, but it will still be very good. Over all though, a very pleasing thing. I've realised that I like the slightly odd, so this fits me fine. Now, let's find a nice sunburst fretless seeing as my black Fender is now gone.
13. Did it draw the eye somewhat ? It was half an hour from here, couldn't not have it.
14. Nor had I seen one until Gumtree thrust this under my nose yesterday. I have a penchant for having both pickups wide open, then roll the neck pickup back until the mid range just pops out. This does that lovely. A nice linear curve on the tone pot too. It actually does things all the way, not the first 5%. It'll get a run out this week.
15. I posted about this yesterday after I'd seen it, but now I've bought it, I feel as if I can legitimately give it its very own New Bass thread. Haven't begun to decipher the serial number yet, but seeing as these were made between '96 and '98 it'll be in there. Condition is within a whisker of mint and it plays rather nicely. I'm a sucker for the trans red finish, pearl scratchplate, and the gold hardware. A bit of an unknown rarity I suppose and for that alone, I'm rather taken by it. 16. One of the issues is there are six of us, three carrying guitars. I don't imagine the Captain's cupboard is that big. I'm happy with carrying it to the gate and then placed on, but I'm going to go with asking nicely, being polite, all that stuff. Thanks for the advice folks, and the other main thread, which I should have checked.
17. Going for it tomorrow lunch time. Made in Korea 1996-98 it seems.
18. Nor had I, but I do like a bit of bling, and the trans red finish along with soapbars is a bit fetching as well.
19. I'll answer my own question. It's a Squier Pro Tone.
20. Have seen this for sale locally. Obviously, it says Squier Precision Bass on the headstock. The gold hardware, translucent finish, pearl scratchplate and twin soapbars rather confuse me though. What is it ?
21. Thanks Muppet, I'll check that out. Sorry for not using search first.
22. Status Energy 4 - spotted this on someone's post on a Facebook group. Not yet advertised, he said it might be for sale. I PM'd him and got it for £150. Justified. Fender Jazz bass fretless. For the singing lyrical style I get to play in my acoustic gigs, a fretless jazz is all you need. Mine is a Mex. Does all I could ever need. Cost me £350 second hand. Justified. Markbass JB Player's School. - All I need for my acoustic gigs with no PA support. All I need for my big gigs where there is PA support. I don't need anything in between, sounds beautiful. Justified. AKG WMS 40 wireless - I stand on my leads and get them snarled up around my ankles. This stops that and makes me marginally less static. Cost me £70 - well justified. Korg AX3000G. £50 second hand. It's a tuner, it has a Jaco tone (chorus, 'verb, delay). It has a couple of generic tones. It's not high end. It's all I need. Justified. All of the above has done great things for me. (I also have a pair of Thomann PA 202 PA cabs. These cost a very modest £87 each new. I bought mine SH for £20, the pair. They sound gorgeous, and I sometimes use them as PA tops for stand ins with another band. These have more than earned their keep. Justified, I'd certainly say.) I've just realised. My gear really is very modest compared to many.
