1.
I voted yours. Beautifully produced and it spoke to me, being an It Bites fan and it reminding me of Murder of the Planet Earth Very interesting take on the original. Great bass too. The other mixes were excellent and I'll post some thoughts later.
Thank you, glad you like it I was a fan of it bites so some of that might have crept in. I know what you mean when you say a mix speaks to you that’s how I know I am on the right track.
2. A big thanks to everyone who voted for me, I have been certified thanks to Dad3353. Some great entries this challenge IMHO if Scol33 had entered his remix he would have won. I was well out of my comfort zone with this challenge I can tell you. It took a lot of trial and error to even find direction I was comfortable with. I was working on midi drums for another song when I had this silly idea to see what they would sound like with Hushe Mamba, I never thought it would work has the songs were completely different styles and rhythms but I was desperate for any sort of inspiration or direction. I did and with a little rearranging it started to feel right so I just picked up the bass and started jamming, with the modern beat and the bass line sorted the rest fell into place. Once again a big than you to everyone involved or even just had a listen to the tracks. and a really big thank you to Scol33 for all his hard work and to London Zulu for allowing me to butcher their fine work.
3. Let me play the devil's advocate, did the venue make any extra money when you take into consideration the cost of the band, extra staff if need, extra energy, plus the wholesale cost of the beverages.
4. I use the Duende SSL bundle, and the slate VCC+ VTM, PSP Vintage Warmer is great and I am very tempted to buy the new Eiosis Aireq, I am trying it now and I am very impressed. Valhalla reverbs a great a bargain at that price
5. Why do you want to use compression? Unless you really understand what you want from the compressor it is difficult to answer. If you want to change your sound then, Yes If you just want to keep the bass in the right place of the mix then it is best done FOH.
6.
OK guess I had that coming! Well, as I'm new to doing this mixing malarkey, I thought I'd at least get some (free) VSTi plugs to add into Reaper so I've got options to create additional piano and/or synth-y parts to this track (and for the future). I'm a complete n00b to composition on anything other than a stringed instrument :/ so I'm guessing I'd want a synth for pads etc and a piano/keyboard emulation for creating more lead-type lines. HTH, Ian PS I've just seen a video on YT and taken the recommendation of downloading Super Wave P8 for starters. Now to configure my VSTi folder.....
This looks like good value http://www.jrrshop.com/ik-multimedia-total-workstation
7.
Do me a favour Ian, can you Mellodyne my bass line to correct all those bloody timing errors
I wouldn't be so hard on yourself it sounds fine, nothing there to be ashamed of. if you play to a lot of quantized and corrected music or produce yourself you can get paranoid about timing, or at least I do, I tend to be ok with other musicians but I find it very hard to be objective when it comes to things I have played. It is a great bass line, the reason I say this is because of all the remixes done with the exaction of mine, the bass line plays a integral part to the tune, the only reason I didn't use it was for that reason, I just felt that I could not add or do anything to improve the tune so I reworked it.
8. Good experienced musicians arrange their parts so they fit sonically with the other instruments, it's the same with tone, it is all about working and gelling together has a band, it is not about getting killer tones with your own instrument it's about fitting in and finding you place within the music. If you constantly get a bad stage sound then putting everything through the monitors won't be doing you any fevers at all until you have address any problems you may have with the arrangements, tone, playing too loud, or simply playing as bunch of individuals and not has a band. even if just one member doesn't get this it can bring the whole band down. ff you get it right there is no reason for not getting a good sound on or off stage.
9. There is no set rules if it works for everybody in the band do it. Saying that there should be no need unless you deliberately play quit or the band plays too loud. Also if you have a bass sound coming from the back out of your cab and at the same time coming out of the front wedges you are likely to get phasing problems. If you want my personal opinion I would just use the front wedges for the vocals unless there is a reason not to.
10. Here it is my remix. https://soundcloud.c...ronside1966-mix
11. Have I got this right? When we have done our mix we post a link direct to here from Sound cloud, we do not send Skol303 the track and we can post them any time you want so long as it is before the deadline.
12.
Spent a few weeks recording an album with Tony Visconti in 1981. What that man doesn't know about producing records aint worth knowing, a man that knows how to get the best from a musician. As in all walks of life... you get the good guys, and then you get the ar****les
If that was with Hazel O'Connor I had that LP, a talented lady IMHO
13. I was brought up on the old Soundcraft desks they were on the large side but good desks. They then brought out the spirit range, a sort of economy version similar to Squire's, the spirits were very popular possibly mainly because they were the comparatively cheap and had a lot of features not seen before at desk in that price range but they left me underwhelmed. Ideally you need to try a desk for a few gigs to see if it suits you. I don't know what Soundcraft MFXI 12 is like and I suppose it depends what you want the desk for, not all desks are equal, using a lesser desk you will notice a difference, in volume, punch, clarity, tightness of bass even with a flat EQ. I would rather take in a large Soundcraft the use a small Spirit.
14. Another great challenge this time. Xilddx plays in some great bands and it always a pleasure to work on any of his tracks they all have a touch of class about them. Having just listened to the re-mixers that have been done already, the bar is set incredibly high this time, in all aspects including mixing, playing\programming, Ideas and production. My progress is akin to a kid who has taken his bike to bits and can't put it back together again with parts strewn all over the garden. Remixing is not my bag and I don't really understand this type of music, so I feel totally out of my depth. I can't think of a better reason to have a go because the worst that could happen is I might learn something.
15. This is defiantly not just a age just a age thing or anything to do with class. Having worked in live sound, I found that the vast majority of musicians were great. but I regularly come across bands and musicians who thought they were doing a everybody a great big favour by turning up.
16. Is one device set to record at 48 kHz and the other 44.1 kHz? if so you will have to use dither to get them both to 44.1 kHz.
17. The trick to getting a great drum sound is a great sounding kit, played by a great player, in a great sounding room mic'ed up well. There are lots of videos on you tube on the subject that give good advice so I would look at a few of them. First tune the kit and make it sound the best you can in that room. A well recorded drum kit should sound good without an processing so try to get the sound right a source. When dealing with situations that are less than ideal like recording a drum kit in a living room my advice would be to experiment, record a number of short test recordings with the mic's at various positions and even move the kit to different places around the room. I would also use a room mic if possible, this could even be placed outside the room or pointing window to capture the reflections again you need to experiment. One of the problems with recording drums at home is the reflections from the low ceilings going in into the overheads, hanging a duvet above the o/h mic's may help, it might mean that the drummer has to play quieter. My priority would be to get the best sound I can from the overheads I could, the individual drums sound could be replaced or enhanced by samples later but id the o/s are bad you are stuck. why not try XY position for overheads? this eliminates any phase issue you may get using a space pair. lastly I would also use a room mic if possible, this could even be outside the room or pointing window to capture the reflections. There is nothing more satisfying then getting a great drum sound you have recorded yourself so good luck and let us know how you get on
18. I tried to do some guide vocals on a recording project the other week, on listening back I was singing in a mono tone that was a semitone flat. How can anybody be that bad? After a few attempts I just don’t get any better. I have never been able to sing but I didn’t know I how bad I am until know. I have been in lots of bands over the years. I would say I am a musical person, I am competent on a few instruments and have a good sense of pitch most of the time. Is this Normal? How can I improve?
19. I am definitely in the category in the no artistic integrity and firmly believe in giving the punters what they want but you can do that without playing the cover band top 40 (still in at no 1 after 30 Years ALL Right Now). You have the pick songs that connect with people and go down well with your target audience without regurgitating the same old set list, it just takes a little bit of imagination, and it’s too easy to pick songs just because they went down well in your last band. I know there are plenty of bands doing this successfully but that my point why compete in a crowded market just be that little bit deferent and that will make you special.
20. I have nothing against the song or anybody playing old music but there seems to be a lot of covers bands playing the same songs. Be the best, be different, or just be the cheapest but don’t be like all the others.
21. It spent 2 week at no 1 in 1990 but most musicians I know have played it at some time, including me. I played in the mid-nineties and it was old hat then. I don’t understand why some bands haven’t moved on
22. I can't add much more to what the Sonic Scoop article except to say don't overdo it, use 3db or 4db of gain reduction maybe less. Set the attack quite fast, release so that the bass sounds natural and doesn't jump up in volume but doesn't compress any longer than it needs too. Use your ears.
