  1. Ah, so you don't round off the fingerboard edges until after the frets have gone in? That's interesting, @Cosmicrain, I sort of assumed it would be done before. There's going to be a really obvious reason why's it's done this way round, isn't there!
  2. Looking good, Mike, looking really good!
  3. Obviously, now it's turned out so well, I'll never go above the 14th fret! 😁
  4. It's feeling fairly, er 'substantial', but no final weight yet. My Funkmeister, which has a mahogany body also, comes in - very approximately - at about 9lbs.
  5. I have been procrastinating about this for months but I am finally reconciled to parting with my beautiful Zoot Funkmeister Custom, made for me by Mike Walsh. If it weren't for the impending arrival of a new Zoot and the fact I already have another 3, I would be keeping hold of this but pragmatism and space have won out. I'm looking for £1,200 - a considerable amount less than the same spec would cost to be built new. EDIT: For interested parties with cashflow issues I'm happy to take payment in 2-3 instalments over a couple of months if wanted. Delivery/collection on receipt of final payment. Even by Mike's (our very own Cosmicrain) usual high standards this is a bit special. It has an exhibition grade flamed maple top which really has to be seen to be believed - the pictures don't do it justice at all - with matching headstock, both finished in a deep amber/antique brown colour. Body is mahogany laminate with maple veneers separating the two layers and the top wood. The hardware is custom (black/gold mix) USA Hipshot throughout, with Haeussel pickups and a John East U-retro (3 band with para mids) preamp (18v) with passive switching and tone control. Neck is a 5 piece laminate of roasted maple and tiger striped blue jarra. As you can imagine, it has tone to die for: Specifications: BODY: Two piece mahogany with maple veneers between. TOP: Exhibition grade flamed maple finished in deep amber/antique brown with matching headstock NECK: 5 piece laminate of roasted maple and tiger striped blue Jarra. 32" scale' 37.5mm nut width. STRING SPACING: 17.5mm at bridge FINGERBOARD: Macassar ebony, approx 16/18" radius. Medium jumbo frets with rolled fingerboard edges HARDWARE: Custom Hipshot (USA) in black and gold PICKUPS: Custom Haeussel Slan humbucker Jazz-type PREAMP: John East U-retro with passive switch and tone. Wired for 18v WEIGHT: Approx 9lbs based on the tried and trusted bathroom scales method It's a great bass and a fantastic example of a top luthier's work. Completely clean and in 'as new' condition - no scratches, buckle rash or marks of any kind. Plays like a dream and sounds fantastic. Currently strung with Roto steel roundwounds (40-90). I'm happy to demo if anyone cares to visit Bass Culture Towers in Chester - tea and cat tickling will be optional extras. So, if anyone fancies a top quality custom bass, at a greatly reduced price - without the 12 + month wait, and with 'easy payment' option - you know what to do! Pick up is preferable for obvious reasons but I do have a spare Hiscox lite flight case I can send it in if needed (for, say, £40), so the buyer is welcome to arrange delivery by their preferred courier and it will be securely and safely packaged. Any questions - just shoot. Oh - and sale only please. Not looking for any trades.
  6. Thanks for your replies, folks. I think i’m getting my head round it now!
  7. Yep, personal taste. We used this shape on my ZB-1000 too, as I like the symmetrical placement of the tuners. It’s more in keeping with the Wal original too.
  8. I'm doing a bit of homework on a potential new combo purchase. I run my current, TC RH750, head with its compression all the time. Of the combos I'm looking at some have on board compression and others have a limiter. Are these different names for the same effect or do they do different things? If so, what's the difference in terms of the impact on the sound of my bass? Yours, confused of Chester. [Mods - if you think this is the wrong forum for this query, please move.]
  9. Having played the SWB Deluxe at the weekend I would certainly say the quality is top notch. They are really, really nice basses, with excellent quality PUPs and preamp too. They'd be on my list if I were in the market.
  10. I like the look of this but I see it's described as an Acoustic guitar amp. At 23kg, probably a bit heavier than I'd like as my current amp and single cab set is less than (although probably heavier when I add the second cab). The informed choices seem to be: 1) AER Amp One or Three (second hand) 2) GR AT or Cube - one of the variants 3) GK Fusion 112 or 115 4) Markbass CP 121P So, seems like I need to spend some time comparing the specs of each in a more considered way, and then think carefully how about how much gigging use I may get out of it. Thanks for the replies so far. Still happy to hear about any others that people have a fondness for.
  11. Thanks for the suggestions so far. I did play through a MB 2x10 combo at a rehearsal the other week (the tilt back one, can't remember the model number) and was really impressed by it. I could spend more if needed but it sounds like there's a lot of love for the MB CP 121.
  12. Bass Direct appear an AER Amp One second hand at present too - unless I've turned up a historical search result.
  13. As my playing is pretty much combined to the bedroom these days I'm thinking of changing my small 'stack' (TC RH750 and 2 x Purple Chili 1 x10 cans) for a high end 1 x 12 (preferably) or 1 x 10 combo. Considerations are light weight, decent bottom end and - ideally - a decent on board compressor and maybe an in-built tuner. I play finger style and don't slap so a I don't anything with a tweeter. Budget would in or around £1k. I like the look of the GK Fusion combo, and the GR AT Cubes look a good shout too. Anyone heard them or use either of these? Or are there any others models I should be looking at that fit the bill. Gigs are rare but they should be gig-able too - so a decent DI for PA use is a must too. What does the hive mind recommend? Thanks.
  14. I posted a few months ago about 'Care of Cell 44' after learning it for a bass pupil of mine. What a great line - so melodic and musical.
  15. I went on Saturday with a guitar-playing friend. We did the hall in about 30 minutes. Hugely underwhelming. I did try one of the new British-built SW Deluxe Chowny basses (nice, but a long way short of competitively priced). We found a bar nearby, had a couple of pints and went back after lunch and - surprise, surprise - I found myself taking an over-priced set of Rotosound string and (more unexpectedly) a PRS parlour-sized, electro-acoustic g****r home! I don't know if that says more about me or the show...Still, it was only a short train journey from Chester and there's worse places than Liverpool to spend a few hours with a mate, I guess.
  16. Oh, there are so many of these responses I empathise with! Turned 59 a month ago. Back around my 50th birthday I commissioned an ACG custom build as my LAST bass - no band, no gigs, bedroom playing only. In the next month or so I'll be taking delivery of my 5th Zoot custom, none of which I owned on my 50th birthday. I've even started looking lasciviously at the new TE head FFS! 1200w for more or less exclusive bedroom use - I need my bumps felt. I'm going to the Guitar and Bass Show in Liverpool tomorrow - God knows what will be on the shopping list after that!
  17. Even so, I've still had to request refunds for the Jeff Berlin and Leland Sklar clinics that no longer appear to be happening that I'd booked for. Mind you, I'm now going with a guitar-playing friend, rather than my one, now Covid positive, bass 'pupil'...
  18. Great catch-up with Mike yesterday - thanks @Cosmicrain. The bass looks great, the wood is much more interesting close up than in the pictures and the shape works brilliantly. Bit unsure about the gold but Mike’s convinced it will look good when the wood darkens after the finish is applied. Very happy with progress.
  19. You can take the boy out of Essex, Michael, but....🤣
  20. Now thinking I should have spec'ed gold pick up surround and pole piece screws!
  21. Holy moly, that's looking something else!
  22. Thank you, @Cosmicrain- this is starting to look exactly is I imagined. Great work, as always. Can't wait to see it up close 'n' personal in a couple of days time.
  23. I'll be there and will definitely be putting these through their paces - well, as best I can manage anyway.
