Bass = fundamental tone/character on board eq = coarse tone shaping for the bass according to the music style (before it goes to the desk) amp eq = room acoustics (DI is taken pre amp eq)

Team it up with a valve head when you get the chance. The Stingray will make big sexy time with your ears.

I'd probably have his Trace Elliot V8 as I reckon thats the best designed of the valve amps. Don't know anything about those cabs though. I'm so fussy about the value for money that cabs give. I've heard Accugroove and Epifani and been less than impressed. I'm curious about Bergantino - never heard them.

I think Tom is infamous on Talkbass as a complete gear whore. He's got pretty much every desirable valve bass amp that's been made in the last 20 years, reviews gear for Bass Guitar Magazine and has even been endorsing Sadowsky amps. Not bad for someone whose day job is an attourney, I can only imagine the kind of space he has to store all of that stuff.

Well, to give the desk-monkeys some credit, the bass does sound a little cleaner on the whole but lacks the enveloping, immersional experience when I break out the fretless and stereo chorus.

I usually get an engineer telling me that the lower frequencies are going to sound muddy if the bass is in stereo and there's no way the average desk-monkey would ever take three DI from a bass amp (stereo highs and mono lows). I don't know if it applied to MIM Fenders but certainly the later model Squiers had plywood bodies. If you hold the bass body up to the light and look at the reflections off the painted surface in the waist chamfer, you will be able to see faint sets of alternating parallel indentations. Don't even waste your time refinishing that kind of body, get another from somewhere like Brandolini or off Ebay.
