I like the customisability of the eq and the triple band compressor...that's sold me on the unit alone. You could put any bass through that system and have it sounding sweet. Do we have any UK prices for them?

Ibanez Musician Fretless - SOLD, pending the usual!
Kiwi replied to sshorepunk's topic in Basses For Sale
When the 80's become ironic, I wouldn't be surprised if a bass player in an up and coming pop band is seen playing one of these instruments and waxes lyrical about them. If that happens, then you can be sure the used values will shoot through the roof! Ibanez wouldn't have marketed such an outrageously priced reissue if there wasn't something to the originals Someone buy this bass before I beat you all to the punch. -
I love you guys.
So, let me get this right. I have stated that I find Ampeg tone distinctive and I love the sound. I was then told that it could not be possible to recognise a certain tone, despite my providing specific examples of times when I have done so. When it was impossible to rebut those examples, I was then challenged over my experience. And you say I should not alienate myself?
Are you suggesting that your opinions are more credible than the opinions of anyone else on the forum?
Yes, absolutely. That is what happens when you challenge those who place commercial sponsor agendas over safety and human lives.
I'm sure you felt what you did was right.
Sound is subjective.
The issue isn't about subjectivity. It's about not alienating yourself. However I'm sure you will make your bed up as you wish to lie in it. Is it true that you've already been banned from another internet forum?
Absolutely and that's my choice. I do not have to list my music credentials to have, or express an opinion. Equally, I do not judge the validity or credibility of other commentators posts based on what I perceive to be their musical "visibility".
But AM if you expect your comments to be given credibility by others on this forum then you *should* be clear about what your musical experience is - as any expert witness under cross examination might in a court room. You of all people should understand how credibility is established!

I sold my GK RB700 combo to get a Shuttle 6 which I still own. My thoughts: Buy the Shuttle because weight, neutral colouring and portability are your main priorities. You won't have the same tone shaping abilities and you won't have the ear splitting sizzle from the GK but you can't expect to get everything in a chassis that size. Buy the GK if you own a dark or scooped sounding bass, or need a lot of aggressive treble and low end in your sound, or need extensive tone shaping (for example if you play with a pick and need to hear attack). Apart from that I don't think there's a lot between them. Both have mid controls you can tweak to help with monitoring on stage so in terms of dialing in the mids that carry pitch information, either would be OK assuming the same speaker set up was used in each.

I went into Packhorse cases in Peterborough yesterday for a relining for one of my cases and was impressed by the folk there. They're handling a lot of major tours including Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and Lionel Richie. They produce good quality cases but are very reasonable and realistic if you have budget constraints. http://www.packhorse.co.uk/ (I spoke to them about Flightcase Warehouse - apparently they get a lot of business from former Warehouse customers!)

Things that musicians do that are a waste of time!

I wanna do Bach's Prelude for Cello like John Patitucci. I started to learn it but the stretches are so huge on a 6 string bass that I'm probably never going to play it with the smoothness of a cellist...or Patitucci for that matter. -

In my experience the answer depends a lot on how big the venue is and what level of FOH you will be working with. If the venue is small, the FOH mostly for vox and your bass rig is supplying most of the FOH sound of your instrument then post eq should be fine. The worst situation I've found myself in soundwise is a small stage with a huge PA and massive bass bins with a sound man who has a club mix approach to eq-ing the FOH (ie. loads of sub bass). Its next to impossible to hear yourself on stage not simply because of competition but because the sound that comes out the back of the subs can even be out of phase with what is coming out of your rig (think noise cancelling effect). I had this happen to me at the Boston Dome (with a twat of a soundman). There was a 4x15 sub bass set up on either side of the stage and I had the bass maxed to the absolute limit on my rig yet still couldn't hear myself. When I tried the rig at sound check and after the PA was turned down post gig, the monitoring I had was thunderous but with the PA on performance volumes...nothing! Otherwise I'd send pre-eq because for anything other than the smallest venues, you'll just be forcing the sound man to compensate for your onstage eq set up through the FOH mixing desk.

Certainly did mate. It would be nice to be able to customise the forum software like that but if we did, it would be difficult to update in the event of spammers. So we can either employ someone to code up custom software meaning all the suggestions could be taken on board but we'd have to charge people for it. Or we can continue to use the off-the-shelf package with reduced convenience.

Formerly owned by Alemboid, I got this bit of kit basically because I wanted something that would allow me to select between CD, MP3 player, record player etc. without getting off the sofa. It's also capable of Dolby 5.1 output and you can select from between up to 5 video related sources (s-video, composite and digital), two tape sources, cd, tuner etc. The 5.1 output is via a DB25 output socket or RCA jacks. This unit does not process video, just audio. Generally considered very good value for the features and Dolby 5.1 isn't yet so far over the hill if you fancy a cheap entry into surround sound. User manual is downloadable from here: http://safemanuals.com/user-guide-instruct...OTEL/RSP-966-_E I'm asking £100 (which is what I paid for it) excl.

Yesterday I was mucking about with my MIDI rig a little and came to the conclusion that the Strategy 400, as lovely as it is, is realistically too heavy for me to gig with. So I'm going to see what level of interest there is for it here before thinking about putting it on Ebay mainly because I'm interested in trades. These things are in a class of their own. Noone has made or currently makes a stereo valve power amp of this power rating apart from Mesa Boogie and even they don't make this model any more. Built like a nuclear bunker, it has 12 6L6 valves that are designed to barely just tick over when the thing is on full tilt. Result being that you don't really need to replace the power valves as often as other amps. I've only gigged this amp once, the rest of the time I've used it as my hi fi power amp which, ironically, is what the Strategy 400 was originally designed as. Output is 200w a side but there is the facility to connect 2 cabinets per side at 4 or 8 ohms. So potentially you could hook up eight 8ohm cabs to a single amp using linking jacks on the cabs. (Or eight 8 ohm Barefaced compacts if you like! ) There are left and right channel inputs and there is also a mono summed input as well. There's no bridging facility so you WILL need two cabs to get the best out of it. I had it serviced about 4 months ago where one valve was replaced with a matching example. The amp has fixed biasing so the choices are either replaced a dud valve with one of a value that matches the others, or replace the whole lot (which seems a bit of a waste unless the amp sounds muffled). The power switch was shorting out and got replaced too but Mesa tweaked the design a little so its a little more rounded than the originals. So if anyone is seriously interested in this amp, PM me by April 25th. I know what I could potentially get for it on Ebay if there was strong bidding but I'd like to see if anyone on Basschat is particularly keen on it first. I reserve the right to change my mind mainly because it sounds amazingly fat and clean with a bit of synth bass pumping through it. As mentioned already, if there's trade bait out there (like a Yammie BBNEII, Spector Euro 5, Lakland 5502 or Status headless 5...or a multi effects unit with stereo inputs and tap tempo delay) I would be prepared to consider a trade plus cash if relevant. For anyone with specific technical questions, a user manual can be found on the Mesa Boogie site here: http://www.mesaboogie.com/manuals/Strategy...00%20Stereo.pdf Schematic: http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics...view.php?id=292 Usual raving at Harmony Central: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...+Power+Amp/10/1

I think there's a phasing issue with the recording. Could be the mics or it could be the codec used to compress the clip.

Would it be worth asking them for some sound samples?

Youth of today need a good thrashing. I got thrashed within an inch of my life when I were a lad and it never did me no harm...probably made me into the well known and respected, religious leader, philathropist, talkshow host, genius and superhero transvestite that I am today. In fact, lets have thrashings for everyone. Who wants to be first?
