1. But not all Jazz Basses have them. IIRC, higher spec models don't have them, it's just solid wood under there. It's a bit of a sh*tt*r really, I wanted to have my MIM Jazz scratchplateless but it had that hole in it. Also had some rout for the pickup wires to sit in that looked like it had been made using something that was also used for ploughing fields. One of the plus sides to most Fenders having large scratchplates is they can cover up a world of sins, such as the 'swimming pool' pickup cavity routing in my Strat
2.
Funny or not this was indeed the logic used, and it was actually how Leo Fender & friends thought of their first elite lines till about '65 when Fender became CBS property. The Precision bass was a the first wide production solidbody fretted bass, and unlike doghouse basses - they allowed the player to play with 'precision'. The solidbody electric guitar for radio & later TV - the Broadcaster and the Telecaster. The jazz bass and the jazz master were intended for the solidbody electric guitar and bass break into jazz market. The solidbody guitar to make music to the heavens - i.e. the Stratosphere & space aliens - the Stratocaster The lesser line were named after animals, mustangs, jaguars, broncos... The Fender Coronado broke this chain of logic.
I thought the name Broadcaster was changed to Telecaster as Gretsch had copyright on the name Broadkaster for their range of drums, and weren't happy about Fender's use of the same name, albeit spelled differently (read properly), and not because it was intended for the TV, as it's essentially the same guitar. The Gibson colour 'TV yellow' however was named as it was intended to show up better on the TV and make it stand out more. It's the colout they use on LP Juniors.
3. I would have had it if it was posted, but we're hitting the tail end of the month now and funds are low EDIT: These cabs are the shiz, you're all fools for not snapping it up!
4.
Yep, the Squiers are all Chinese (I think) & none the worse for it! The Telebass shapes are Japanese, same as the Geddy Lee signature. Only ones from the Americas, as it were, are the Precision Deluxe Specials. They're Mexican made. Jono, you can always snap up one of the last MIA S1 models, like I did with my jazz. They're £699 at sound control, as opposed to the list price of around £900.
I've not really got as much as that to part with just now To be honest I'm probably looking for a second hand Mexican one, or possibly the Squier TB, it's in the 'Wish List'.
5. Epiphone EB-0? It's a 30" scale. Or a Fender Mustang, and if he gives up you can always keep it for yourself
6. I have a Squier Tele Deluxe with a Strat neck on it, that's pretty nice. I'm in the process of re-building my strat too, need a few more bits and bobs and I can start soldering. Would love a Jazzmaster, maybe a white or sunburst standard Tele with a maple neck. On the Gibson side of things, an SG in brown or cherry would be schweeeeeeet! I've been listening to Fugazi - Repeater a lot recently and there's a picture of Guy Piciotto playing a Las Paul Junior, wouldn't mind one of them either.
7. You could try swapping the nut if swapping the strings doesn't work, although it sounds like that is the problem. You don't say what model P you have, but if it's a Mexican one then a new nut would be a good idea anyway. The plastic ones they come with are gash, a nice brass or even a GraphTech one would be a huge improvement.
8. Is it just me or do maple necks not really seem to be an option on Fender basses? Looking about on the net all the MIM basses have rosewood fingerboards and an all maple neck isn't available. The same goes for Squiers. There seems to be plenty of maple MIJ Fenders but I've not got the benjamins for one. The thing is, maple necks are available for for Mexican guitars, Strats and Teles, but not Precisions and Jazzes, it really grinds my gears. Does anyone know where you can get one? I'm lusting after a white P. This looks pretty tasty, although it appears to have been Eddie Van Halen'd at some point
9. Googling the 201, they're $30 from Warmoth, which is approx. £15. Dunno what the postage would be like (anyone ordered from there?) but it's low enough so I avoid customs and horrible things like that. Anyone want a Badass II?
10. Yep, daisy chaining will give you the 4 ohms, not 16. Adding 2 8 ohm cabs together gives you 4 ohms, not 16. You'll be fine.
11.
gotoh
Which one?
12.
I've just gone back to Fender Stainless Bass 7350M's (.045, .065, .085, .105) after trying many different kinds. Good life, easy to play. This gadgey does cheap strings... http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Guitar-Strings-n-Things
+1 Started buying all my strings from him. Massive selection and even with postage (which is usually about a quid) it beats buying anything they have on offer in Ayr (Ernie Balls, or cheapo lengths of cheese wire). If you order early enough in the day - before 3pm I think - you can have your strings the next day too. It cost me £14 for a set of D' Addario XLs the other day, which are my recommendation if anyone still checks this out. I like 45-100.
13. I'm looking for a new bridge for my Jazz, something to increase sustain and improve intonation on the original one, but isn't a Badass II (or III, or I). I've got one on it already but I don't really like the way it looks. I'd prefer something a bit more traditional looking, but I don't want the sound to suffer as a result. Any suggestions?
14. Strung up my Jazz with a set of D' Addario XLs yesterday to try and adjust the string break angle on the E. Went for a set of 45-100s instead of the 50-105 Ernie Balls I had on there, much nicer to play now, comfortable and the XLs sound nicer than the EBs, and they were a quid less Plus you get the added novelty of the multicoloured ball ends. Think a set of Chromes or halfs for the Precision may be in order.
15. I saw that too, trawling the 'Bay for a cheapo P copy. You've got to wonder why he put the J pickups where he did, they're not exactly standard locations. They're both pretty close, can't imagine they'd sound that different. That scratchplate is horrible too.
16. What would the postage be on this? I'm too far away to collect or have you deliver it.
17. And what is a 'standard' gauge while we're at it? I've been using 50-105 on my Jazz and I believe I have 45-100s on my Precision (both Ernie Balls). I prefer the 100s, they're more comfortable IMO. What is a standard gauge for bass strings though? I have no idea what my basses came with and altering your strings without adjusting your bass can be pretty disastrous but so far I seem to be okay.
18. They work when they're both on but it's only when they're both on full that the volume drops out. I never have them both on full so I've only noticed recently and it's not really a problem, it's just a bit annoying.
19. I may be tempted, will let you know ASAP how funds are looking. Is this the original version or the upgraded one? Think the upgraded ones are post 06
20. Do you have any pictures of it? And can it be hooked up to an extension cab? I've been without a guitar amp for almost a year now
21. I can't see that it would, unless one has more windings in it. You could always swap them about, and see if they change the sound at all, you might uncover something interesting. If you don't like it then you can always swap back.
22. I'm not totally sure how long I've had this problem, but I only noticed for the first time about 3 months or so ago. Anyway, the problem is this - with both volume controls on full, the volume drops out to almost nil. I have a Mexican Jazz, with 2 volumes and a master tone. With just one pickup on full and the other turned right down, the pickup works fine. This is the case for both pickups, when isolated they're fine, but with both on full they're almost silent. If I turn either knob roughly a quarter turn down it's fine. As I say, I don't know how long my bass has been like this, but I've only noticed it recently. I usually have the neck pickup full and the bridge at about 3/4 full, and so I never noticed the drop as I was just a fraction of a turn shy of it cutting out. I had the neck pickup replaced with a Duncan Quarterpounder last year sometime but I can't think when. Is it possible this is the cause of the volume drop, or when it was fitted the tech didn't re-wire it properly? Looking at the underside of the control plate everything seems to be in order.
23.
Huh?
You said cheers after you posted those pictures. Who are you thanking and why?
24. Ordered a new set of D'Addarios, will restring the Jazz on Monday/Tuesday and see how it goes.
25.
Here are some pics to help you. Leave about 150mm of string to wind on. Cheers Steve.
You're welcome
