Keep up with a drummer? Well, I wouldn't guarantee it but you may be surprised. I've used a single crazy 8 twice alongside Richie Bryant who for a long time was Acker's drummer. For me the bigger problem is with keyboard players who play 'my' notes. I was with a guy the other day who doesn't even sit centrally and at times his left hand was two keys from the LH end. I spoke to him in the break and he behaved a bit better after that. I'll be ordering a new 8 to go with my extg.

Yes on balance it does. I use mine mainly for trio gigs but I have also got away with propelling an eight piece in front of an audience of 100approx (Pump House, Watford). In retrospect I'm not too sure how I managed that one. But for a trio/quartet it's great. I must get a second one; I reckon a pair would be unbeatable and easy for an old guy to load in. Thanks for the link, Clarky. I'll have one at the Double Bass and SE Bass Bashes for anyone who's interested.

I use one for DB. Great amp. I particularly like the taste knob which, xroads says is great for scooping or adding. It's a quick idot- proof control for getting the right sound without too much faffing about.

Sorry Pete. Nobody likes a smart arse, do they.

The Romberg Bevel.

OK. It was a while ago.

It's a while since I had an EDM1 but from memory the phantom power is only 18v. Could this be a clue to the problem?

No, you're wrong Bilbo. Some have hatpegs and some don't. The rest is all the bloody same. Oh, and some are blondes - but we know all about them.

Louder acoustic bass options ( is there any such thing)

Why not come to the Double Bass Bash on Sunday 5 October - it's pinned under Events. You will meet friendly double bass players who will be only too pleased to demonstrate the wonders of the upright and let you have a play. Who knows, we may even have a conversion or two. -
We need the link!! We need the link!!
No no no. I'd die of embarrassment.

73 I saw myself on YouTube from a gig two weeks ago. Time to stop. I can still play, lift the cab, but.............time to stop.

I took my German Blonde Ply to an outside gig yesterday. It does all the outside stuff because it's more resistant to rain than the carved basses. Set up the amp, bass out of cover, plugged in and just a soggy sound from the strings. It immediately became obvious that the tail wire was about to go. This is the second time it's happened on a German; the older basses were fitted with quite soft wire. So I took it back home and picked up the Martin and got back to the gig for the second set - 50 mins round trip. They said they got on quite well without a bass! This morning I looked on line and found that Martyn Bailey does a tail wire kit and while I was about it I thought I'd treat the bass to a new tailpiece as well; the wire is included. But I found that he's on holiday for two weeks and I've got another outsider next weekend. On the offchance I phoned George Martin who took the call from the back of a horse! Told me to go and see the guys in the workshop and they would fix me up with some cable and a cleat. Which they did for a bag of donuts. On the way out I saw Tom Martin and it was good to have a chat with him. He's doing mainly teaching right now but there will be some more international stuff soon. He said that when he started out he never dreamed that the double bass would take off in the way that it has. He was interested to hear about the Bass Bash and asked me to keep George in the loop. I wonder whether I can persuade him to come. So, back home and the tailwire was fitted by 3 o'clock and I have a fully working bass again.
I presume I am OK to bring a mate along to this event, he is a guitarist for which I appologise but he is also into making things from wood like guitars and turned stuff etc so he fancies seeing some close up fancy wooden stuff Is there a fee per head for the doo or whats the deal, thanks
Hi Pete There will be an entry charge of £10 per head. We are holding the first Double Bass Bash on Sun 5 Oct 11.00-5.00 - Risley Park Hotel, Derby Road, Risley DE72 3SS. As it's the first of its kind the format will be informal; it'll be an opportunity for DB players to meet up, bring their basses and/or equipment and discuss all matters DB. You could also bring any surplus small items such as books, preamps, effects, strings etc to sell. The admission charge to cover the room hire and tea/coffee if we can afford it is £10 per person. All welcome. I'll kick the list off and please copy it and add your names. 1. Bassace - Upton and Bryant basses, Clarus amp and Crazy 8 speaker.

Exactly, HJ. That's what I use and the return trip will carry the amp, wire bag and all the other stuff. Don't forget the bungee.

How superficial? Most hardware shops - the independents certainly - will stock a pack of four different shaded wax crayons for rubbing into scratches and scuffs. They make quite a good, tho not perfect, repair. Unfortunately if you're taking a great unwieldy monster around to gigs there's bound to be a bit of distress now and again, however carefully you treat it.

I've got Bakers but I lust after hatpegs. Same way as I've got my wife but....................oh, never mind.

I've used Mittels ever since I started. I resolved not to monkey about with different strings and settle on one sort. And the Mittels have served me well. There's one characteristic that these strings have though, particularly the G: when you put them on, new or used, they can be over-bright for the first few days. Even the same strings that have been de-tensioned for any reason and then re-tensioned. I have refitted some on my Upton Prof and it sounds like a banjo!

professionalism and learning new chops
bassace replied to BassInMyFace's topic in EUB and Double Bass
For fifty years I've blagged my way through the noble art of bass playing; never had a lesson, my left hand technique is like a train wreck, I'm sure my intonation is suspect and I don't bow or slap, just play straight ahead pizz. I say none of this with satisfaction or pride. But I've had the pleasure of playing with many great musicians, some of them right at the top of the business, and my phone still rings. In a year I'll have played with some 15 different bands. Where is all this going, you might ask. I suppose it means that if you stick to your preferred style, develop it, learn to read and keep your ears open, not only to what you're playing but also to those round you and on CD you won't go far wrong. -
And also perhaps consider 'About the Double Bass' by Peter Tyler www.tylerbasses.co.uk. It doesn't teach how to play the bass but is all about the instrument, its construction, different types of basses, history, care, accessories etc. Congratulations on your great purchase!

Definitely worth considering. The afterlength should play very well.

Ooh, I do like hatpegs!
