An Epi EB-3 is made of mahogany
Oh right...wow.... that's impressive, I assumed they skimped and varnished. Well done Epiphone. and I meant the EB-3, never used to get those mixed up. So why do some not like it, I bet with a few upgrades it would sound a stunner. Matt, just to clarify: Do you have a long scale EB-3 style bass with a Mahogany body? If you do, I'm feeling jealous. paul.
To Musky: My favorite bassists would have to be Flea and Les Claypool, mainly due to the fact that I love their slap bass...
Ahh, now that's really useful information! I'm no slapper, and I play a passive bass but I would presume most would suggest that you buy an Active bass. But I know that passive jazzes have been slapping for a long time. Active basses are usually pricier in general, so they would filter your search results down nicely when shopping. Perhaps one of these could fall in your lap for $500-600 s/h: http://cgi.ebay.com/G-L-5-STRING-ACTIVE-BA...1QQcmdZViewItem http://cgi.ebay.com/IBANEZ-BTB-500-Active-...1QQcmdZViewItem Or maybe an Ibanez SR400, Tobias Toby Pro or a Traben. For a cheaper option: a Peavey Fury bass. A more expensive option: the Carvin LB range. If I were in your position I'd look out for a s/h G&L Tribute; they're well rated, have major niche street cred' and have Fender's midas touch. paul. (opinionated and inexperienced)
Courtesy of Beedster and an exploration of the suburbs of Walsall (wife unamused!) I am now the proud owner of a Thunderbird of the Epiphone variety. It survived a journey home on the back seat (strapped in, I hasten to add!) but this is clearly not a long term option. It has already acquired a headsccok scrape before I got it due to poking out of previous owner's gig bag. What's the best/most cost effective gigbag or case, Thunderbird users? Oh and welcome to Basschat! Did you have a good Independence Day? I wish we had someone to declare independence from. I think I'll just stick to my plans for communist revolution. Очереди, медкомиссия!!!
Well, is there any real difference between the Jazz and the Precision?
Assuming reliability is a given, what two factors are most important when looking at regular solid basses? > tone and playability. What are the biggest factors on tone and playability? > the pickups and the neck. What are the two distinct differences between the jazz and precision bass? > the pickups and the neck. Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Precision_Bass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fender_Jazz_bass My best advice is to go into your local music shop and play the basses in your price range, or just above if you want to buy on ebay. Acknowledge the differences in weight, neck shape and nut width between the different basses and make sure you're comfortable playing all over the neck. You should also be able to play 1 finger per fret on the low E string - nut width, neck shape and scale will affect this ability. The traditional Jazz shaped bass is renowned as a good starter instrument because of its versatility and ease of use. Another good idea is to tell us what music you're into as a pattern may emerge that would suggest a certain pickup arrangement. But most will tell you that a Jazz is a safe bet. I don't really have any knowledge of the American market, so I can't really recommend makes to you. But if you go down your local and see something you like, but are unsure of its rep' - feel free to let us know and we will help you out with brand satisfaction. Harmony Central has a good, comprehensive list of user reviews also: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ss#manufacturer Do you have anything in mind? No doubt you've had a gander around here and seen something you'd quite like? -I'll have a look online for a first time buyers guide - there's mill's of them. Then you've got strings and amplification to consider paul.

From previous ones I had seen, I figured they skimped on wood grain choice with the thumb bolt-on. But that one looks lovely.
An Epi EB-3 is 34" scale and has 2 pickups - 1 large humbucker (neck) and 1 mini humbucker (bridge). 3 way selector and vol/tone for each pup.
What wood is the body made of? I'm still looking for a half-decent, long-scale, mahogany made EB-0 copy. Although I've been deterred by the modern Epi basses, bar the Jack Cassidy.

Bakithi Kumalo Playing along to Graceland yesterday, I was soon reminded that he is one of the best bassists in existence. Top picks from Graceland: Diamonds on the soles of her shoes: http://www.square-kun.com/files/songs/Paul...Her%20Shoes.mp3 Under African Skies: http://www.square-kun.com/files/songs/Paul...can%20Skies.mp3 The Graceland record: http://www.square-kun.com/files/songs/Paul%20Simon/?C=S;O=A

So, has anyone here compared D'Addario Chromes (Flatwound) to TI Jazz Flats?

The only band/artist that I haven't lost interest in or haven't lost reverence for at some point or another is Billie Holiday. Past favorites: Astor Piazzolla Etta James Erik Satie Beethoven Arvo Part Charlie Parker Art Pepper Bud Powell Miles Davis Sam Cooke The Sundays Fairport Convention - Sandy Denny Led Zeppelin Pink Floyd The Who Van Morrison Paul Simon But I've also had previous favorites in Trip-hop and gypsy jazz and folk music from all over the world (Russian, African, French, Celtic, British, Mexican, Argentinian, American, Scandinavian) Other particularly special musicians in popular music: Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Nina Simone, Regina Spektor. Not so popular music: Lhasa, Sun Ra, Anais Mitchell, Ane Brun, The Be Good Tanyas. I'm sure there are many more I can think up in many different lists, but given the chance, at least one of any of those bands/artists has the ability to have a substantial impact on anyones life. Bassists aren't really a deciding factor for me, although Zeppelin's (John Paul Jones), The Who's (John Entwistle), Charlie Parker's (Ray Brown) were exceptional and perhaps those artists wouldn't be there if it weren't for their bassists. --- sorry for the life story I like music. paul.

I'm not a fan of EB strings to be honest. I prefer GHS for a similar good value string.

The big woody tone of a semi-acoustic. - I was thinking Beatles, but I never really felt big and woody from McCartney's playing. --- For a nice semi tone, try and get a hold of "Love That Boy" by Innocence Mission. paul.

Wow.. Looking at this thread, there's so much gear and so much knowledge. I wish we had some sort of Harmony Central style review system. You could punch in the brand, model, price and then have number ratings in: - tone, playability etcetera.. with more detailed information if desired. You could have the reviewer's handle on the left like on a regular post so that readers could PM and ask questions Theoretically, this could be done on the review forum, but there isn't really enough infrastructure for consistency or for enticing people to post reviews of previously owned instruments. Anyway, it's just the dream, I don't think it's feasible with the BC forum interface.

Oh, it was the "Under The Bridge," the melodic bassline by Flea that really got me thinking I'm on to a winner owning a bass.
