1. Immediate, rapid response from Lee - now sorted. Top man. Brilliant customer support. Downloaded schematics = Happy Ross (now where did I put that DMM??) Ross
2. Lee, I've just sent an email. TIA, Ross
3. This is odd. I have been emailing them with regard to my EB 180-12 for the past month and have heard nothing. I have requested access to the schematics (the VU meter is non-operational) and even registered for the latest news on the website, and to date absolutely nothing so far. Puzzled. Ross
4. I'm wondering whether one of these is worth a punt?? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/5-STRING-SOAP-BA...=item5ad2c29643 Also, does anyone have an idea where I can obtain info for a MightMite DXH1 soapbar pick-up?? TIA Ross

8. I can recommend this book too, http://www.amazon.co.uk/Simplified-Sight-R...626&sr=1-25
9.
Most church PAs aren't built to take bass at anything like a decent volume. I'd recommend spending £16 on a decent set of castors (75-100mm) that will roll across poor surfaces and bung them on your existing combo. Then the only lift is into the car afterward - works for me with a Laney 4X10 combo.
+1 I use my Ashdown 12-180 and DI-out to the mixing-desk then output through the church PA. Does the trick, gives me some control (+ foldback) plus the sound can be subtley reinforced by the mxing crew. Yes, the church PA is just not man enough to take bass at high volume - although we are looking at adding a bass amplifier and bass-box to the system in addition to my bass-rig. The Ashdown is fitted with castors, but not sure whether they affect bass-coupling to the floor?? Ross
10. UPDATE Went to see the Ashdown - 30 minutes and £100 lighter and she is mine (are amps female too, like basses and cars!!). In very good nick (just a litle dusty) and it came with a pukka Ashown cover. It does have casters fitted but I may remove these to get better coupling with the floor. The VU meter does not seem to work, but I have seen that this is a common issue so not going to lose too much sleep over this. I'm trying to get hold of the schematic, but Ashdown are a bit slow in responding. Judging from other posts on the matter, it is probably a knackered meter movement so at the moment I am using my ears to detect if the input is overdriven until I resolve the 'problem'. Gigged it on Sunday - very punchy, good tone (but a little different from my usual rig) - still need to play more to tweak the tone, but generally the dog's wotsits. Bargain!! Ross
11. I've seen one of these for £100 S/H. Any comments before I bite the bullet? Ross
12. A couple of months ago, our MD moved us onto the dias from our previous position tucked away beside one of the pillars. Despite being in the 'open' so to speak, this has made me feel more like I am part of the worship team leading the service as I am taking a more prominent role. Funnily enough, this has improved my playing immensly (from the positive comments from the MD and members of the congregation post service) and has given me a new perspective on worship in our church.
13.
It also allows injection of things that make it fun - like doing a hymn reggae style or borrowing little quotes from well known songs and adding them into the backing.
I often get the urge to play the 'Money' bass-line during the offertory hymn/song.
14.
Just to clarify, because I'm curious - do you mean a Tanglewood Canyon or a Cort Curbow?
Tanglewood Curbow
15.
A very interesting and thought-provoking question, and some great answers so far, better than I could have elocuted I don't think the label 'Christian xyz' is meant to be devisive, more it's an attempt by the OP to find other bass players who just happen to play in church / Christians etc. I think a lot of players have gotten started in playing by being in church or a church-run youth group. I know I got back into playing bass in my thirties after being out in the wilderness for many years! The church has given me an opportunity to serve God in a way that brings my faith out, and an ability to encourage others. Plus as I've intimated before in this (and other threads), it gives me an excuse to rip out the big rig From a musicianship perspective as well, we have several excellent musicians in our worship team / band - people who I respect immensely for their talent as well as their heart for worship. They have given me room to grow into transitioning from Bass Owner to Bass Player to Musician. We're all on a journey together is the best way I can describe the friendships that have grown within the group. It's widened my musical horizons as well, getting into bands and genres I wouldn't have necessarily discovered had I been a non-believer. I also listen to a lot of main-stream music just to be encouraged in exploring my musical ability. HTH, Ian
+1
16. I am a Christian and I have been playing in our local church since 1997. It all started when the vicar's wife clocked that I had an acoustic 6-string and asked me to play alongside her at one service. From then, I joined the music-group, but since there were three acoustic guitarists, I switched back to bass. I progressed through different basses until I settled on my Tanglewood Curbow and Ibanez SR through either a 50W or 150W Peavey combo (and latterly DI-ed through the sound-system). Playing at church has given me many opprtunities and increased my musical knowledge and experience - our previous MD formed an orchestra which made me learn to read the bass clef. I play regularly twice a month and recently have been congratulated by the current MD on my sensitive playing and ability which I attribute somewhat to the exposure to differing praise and worship - songs ranging from traditional hymns to Kendrick, and Townend etc. I am now planning to lead a music group myself concentrating on more contemporary/rocker worship songs. Ross
17. I am thinking of buying another Tanglewood Curbow 5-er. There is one for sale for £80-ish BUT it has been resprayed over the original red finish. Does anyone know what happens if all the finish is removed back to expose the luthite? Does it look like wood or not? I would like to have one with a natural finish, but only ones I've seen in the past are similar to a walnut effect and these S/H as as rare as hen's teeth. Any advice would be gratefully received before I pursue any further. TIA Ross
18. Anyone any idea of the model, age and value of this Apologies for the quality

20. Went for a butchers this afternoon. Oh Dear. It was covered in a layer of sticky dust. The action was so high you could drive a double-decker bus under the strings. The body had a dull finish - like the cheap 'Kay'acoustics from the 70's. Back scratched, one knob (oo-err) different from the other three. Fretwork and neck were OK but a bit 'clubby'. So I walked away. I don't think that I would have played it much since I'm very satisfied with my Tanglewood Curbow 5-er and Ibanez SR200. Money saved for another rainy day - maybe a new racing bike. Lesson learnt. Ross
21.
I must admit I read the thread as vintage 5st maple board so I thought we were talking about a MM maple board for £50. I wasn't sure MM did 5 strings early enough to quality as vintage though.
And you really thought that if it were a 'real' MM stingray for that money I would be here asking the question
22.
Do you have pics..?
Ok, a bit of a poor pic
23. I have the chance of first refusal on a Vintage Stringray 5-stringer maple board for £50. Are these any cop? For £50 is this a no-brainer? PS. I don't wish to start a cheap 'Sue Ryder' bass flame war though. JTUK take note!
24.
For me... I like a bass that I have a type of empathy with.
You need to get out more. mate
