Add some material to the bridge side of the neck pocket and this will create an angle there fore allowing you to set the action lower. there's a cracking article on here that's pinned about shimming. Good luck! email me if you need a hand Jack!
In my case, I had fitted lower gauge strings and hence there was too much back-bow due to the lower tension imposed on the neck than previously with the heavier gauge strings. Agreed, some thought needs to be exercised before the truss-rod should be adjusted, but under my circumstance the strings were buzzing half-way down the neck - raising the bridge-saddles to accommodate this meant that I could drive a bus under the strings at the 17th fret!!. Loosening the truss-rod had the effect of allowing the strings to vibrate, shimming the neck meant that I could adjust the bridge for a lower action along the neck. 2.
Thanks for the tips guys! A few things for me to look into there...
I had a similar issue with my Curbow 5-string. Shimmed the neck and loosened the truss-rod in small steps - sorted. The trick is to do a little adjustment and then allow a few days for the neck to settle before re-checking and re-adjusting as required. Hope this helps.
3.
Everything was fine, the wife didn't notice new guitars or amps....but then my daughter learned to talk, and she notices everything! So it ususally goes......"MUM!!! Dads bought a new guitar!!"...... kids, eh? There so cute when they're babies you could eat them, then they grow up and you wish you had!
Yeah, I was my youngest that dobbed me in really. The 'Wow, that's nice, small body' comment whilst looking at my curbow didn't help. This was closely followed by a scowl by the trouble-and-strife.
4.
My SR5 arrived while Mrs Endian was in labour. AFAIK, she thinks I've always had it. (And no, I'm not going to get her up the stick again just so I can sneak in another bass.)
'spose it was my fault for polishing the frets on the ironing-board.
5. My missus has detected my new bass acquisition - I should be more careful!!!!
6.
There was a youtube thing on here the other week where a bass player tried it at a gig and the bass flew off and crashed onto the floor. It was hilarious. I can't find it though.
This one?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixA8cA_fVJc
7. Now surplus to requirements due to purchase of Yamaha keyboard. Two, three octave keyboards, bass pedals, rhythm unit. Very retro, would suit retro-style band. Some of the keys a little 'sticky' but shouldn't be too difficult to sort out. £50 OVNO - buyer collects (its a bit heavy for postman pat to manage!!). Medway area.
8. Well I like the Fender and I like the Squier, but which is best. There's only one way to find out - FIGHT!!!
9. Can anyone recommend how to clean/polish an ebanol fingerboard to make it nice and shiny new looking? T-Cut??
10. Ordered a set of D'addario EXL170-5 strings from RST Music through Amazon on Monday - they arrived today!! Brilliant service, good price £15.95 free postage.
11.
I'd rather not... West Thurrock I can do.
You have a PM
12.
bump to £120 collected
£120, meet in Dartford area????
13.
Well spotted! I was coming back from some gigs abroad and had to go straight to the photo shoot from the airport. I don't like to take my original 62 P-bass on planes so I had my 'touring bass' with me. It's a 1983 JV Squier 62 reissue with a Lindy Fralin pickup, also with flats. Andrew
Nice
14. Interesting how Andrew McKinney's 62 Fender Precision has morphed into a Squier Precision in the photo on page 28.
15.
bump to £150 + postage
Any idea of postage to the Medway towns?
16. I have started using my new Behringer DC9 and it has been fine and the sound has been perfect, but Sunday I received a few comments that I was sounding a bit fuzzy and distorted. What am I doing wrong - have I got too much compression on? Maybe the battery has flattened (mental note to check - but I have only used it for 10 hours max). It is frustrating coz the sound was really nice - but the sound now is better with the compressor out of circuit.
17.
Going off at a tangent, the houseband at my local jam night two weeks ago had a left-handed bass player playing a left-handed Fender Jazz. I spent half an hour trying to figure out what was "wrong" with his set-up ... nothing wrong with his playing, but it looked weird. Finally sussed it. His left-handed bass was strung right-handed. In other words, I could have taken his bass and played it upside down. The controls would have been in the wrong place, and the body cut-out down by my knees, but it would have been perfectly playable. I asked him about it. His older, right-handed brother learned to play bass, and he then learned to play on his brother's bass. End of. Really nice guy, and played some wicked walking lines.
Check out Andy McCluskey of OMD - he is right-handed, but originally learned to play bass guitar on a left-handed model. As a result, he plays with the strings "upside down".
18. Welcome aboard and welcome from a fellow Chatham bass-player.
19. Not much wear on the rear of the neck.
20. Just bought one of these and could someone explain how to set the Sensitivity control. I have read some conflicting reviews on Harmony Central and I would like some advice from an owner to how the control works ie more compression CW or more compression CCW? TIA Ross
21.
I'm 6'3" and 18st last time I looked, that's just horrendous. I've always been a large chap, but there's no excuse for the size of my belly currently. Believe it or not maybe 6-7 years ago I was fit as a fiddle. I used to go mountain biking and to the gym most nights of the week, but since the kids came along that all went out of the window. I played American football for many years too in the 90s, but that's just resulted in my knees being almost unusable these days, and another excuse for not going out on my bike which is gathering dust in the shed. To top it all, I'm almost certainly about to be confirmed as type 2 diabetic, which will mean a serious change in my diet. So I guess that'll get the weight down a bit.
As I said, I made a conscious decision Feb last year to shed some weight leading up my 'significant' birthday this year. So I gave up biscuits, cake, chocolate, crisps etc, took up mountain-biking, free-weights, exercising more and started eating more sensibly. It's mainly a state of mind. Now I see 'larger' people and think to myself, that's what I looked like, what a bloater!! Now I've shed 4 stone, have a 6-pack, don't get out of puff, and feel much heathier - and I'll probably be around longer to enjoy the kids. Ross (ex-FB)
22. I have gone from 16.5 stone to 12.5 stone in 18 months as a conscious decision to be 'fit and 50' and not 'fat and 50' this June. The only problem with this is that the body of the bass digs into me 'boney-bits' more.
23. Went and auditioned it last night - and bought it. Sounds OK - some reviews state that it lacks punch, but I didn't find that - plenty punchy, although I was playing my active bass through it. As I said previously, it is much lighter (48lb) than my TNT (85lb) and hence a bit more 'luggable', not as hernia-inducing, and means that I don't need to do a nad count when I lug it into the back of the car myself. So now I have the best of both worlds - the TNT for the larger church gigs and the 112 for the smaller, church-hall gigs. Just need to sneak it past the missus 'yes, dear, I've had it in the loft/garage/shed/car/study for years'. I'll just tell her that I've been feeding the Microbass with steroids. Ross
24. 50W into 8 ohms, 75W into 4 ohms. It's also lighter than my TNT115s which would make it easier to transport for some smaller venues.
25. Just seen one for sale in my local Crack-converters for £40. Worth shelling out for a small practice/gig backup??
