I apologise for being a tit but there's a lot i didnt understand there I have no idea what that means. Why shouldn't I use those? How do i tell the difference between a major and a minor? (by ear and by tab?) Whats wrong with using majors and minors together? Thanks Ahmed
Theory time. For a very basic example, the triad of C major scale (notes 1, 3 and 5) is C (root), E (major third) and G (fifth). Playing these together (chord) or in sequence (arpeggio) will give the C Maj chord. If the 3rd note of the triad is flattened (down one fret/semitone) then this produces the C minor chord = C (root), Eb (minor third), G (fifth). I suggest that you get a copy of the Bass Guitar (Fretboard Roadmaps) by Fred Sokolow and Tim Emmons - £8.95 from Amazon. Hope this helps. Ross

Being a pedant, surely these are double stops and not chords since they are not triads . Ross
Strap locks - I like Schallers, but other BC-ers may differ... http://www.schaller-guitarparts.de - see 'security locks'
Schallers - top notch. Have used them for years.
I can't find this mag anywhere! Only Bass Player which is US. Seems Barefaced are gonna make it big eh? Uh-oh...Middle man prices added...advertising prices added...Yikes buy one now!
What day of the month is the mag normally out in the shops? My local W H Smith no longer stock it, and I have to rely on a newsagent on teh way t'work. Ross

Sorry, a bit biassed in that I don't like Flying V's. But the spec looks sound - as long as 'solid alder' isn't 'solid laminated alder'. I agree with comments that others have made - check out the hardware and no-name PU's though. 14-days to make your mind up - if it feels good, just do it, £90 is SFA in the scheme of things. I was wrestling with buying a Ibanez SRX for £80 the other week - one of the best purchases I've made. Life's too short.

Why you should never defret a wenge neck Warwick
radansey replied to warwickhunt's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
What a F**King ANIMAL - shouldn't be let loose into society without his carer!!! What a numpty -
Following an extended GAS session, bought this baby a couple of weeks ago (after checking the reviews on harmony-central etc) 2-octave neck, humbuckers, active, with only a couple of 'dings' that you wouldn't see if you didn't know that they were there. Not bad for £80. Used for the 'gig' this morning - sweeeet! Ross 'The Eastwoods'

The recently re-formed 'The Eastwoods' are playing in Chatham on 12th July.

Any experiences, good or bad, when using with bass??

Thanks for all the advice. After al the anguish, took the plunge and bought an Eminence Beta 15, 4 ohms speaker from Blue Aran. Ross

OK, similar question to other posts on here. My Peavey TNT115s quotes 150W in 4 ohms, however getting hold of 4 ohm replacement speakers is proving difficult at present so therefore I am thinking of getting an 8 ohm. Apart from a decrease in overall gain, what are the advantages/disadvantages in doing this? Assuming that halving the impedance does not mean a halving in available gain, can assume a max gain in the region of 100W into 8 ohms? I also want to wire-in a connector to enable me to parallel-wire a second 8-ohm cabinet at a later date if required. Ross

After taking the neck off to fit the Schallers, guess what - plywood body (doh!). Anyway, a fitting trial revealed that the neck, etc was a perfect fit onto a P.Bass body I bought off Ebay which had been sitting collecting dust in my study for the past 5 years. Bit the bullet and fitted all the hardware and gigged Sunday morning. At a guess I would think that the wood is Alder. At the moment undecided whether to leave au naturel or block-colour spray finish (foam green?). Ross PS. So now I have a plywood HB P.Bass body collecting dust in my study instead

Took the neck to work today to pillar-drill out the holes to accept the Schaller tuners. Starting to look a bit sexier. Will sand the headstock face once the tuner fettling has been completed - then add a new transfer. Would like to put on a Fender P.bass transfer from axesrus but this may be a bit too pretentious. Any suggestions? Ross.

3-ply scratchplate fitted after plugging old screw-holes. PU now wired-in properly. I have a set of Schaller tuners which I shall fit soon. Gigged Sunday morning - good tone, I think that the DiMarzio helps a lot. Need to check the intonation and neck-relief but it still saw the 'gig' out, so just needs a little tweeking to make me 100% happy. It's funny, this bass reminds me so much of my first ever 'proper' bass I bought 28 years ago (28 years!!!!) - the PU and tuners are from the old 'un when I stripped it years ago. Ross

Straploks and Dimarzio split P-Bass PU installed. Sounds bloody good for a cheapy bass - good tonal range through my TNT115.
nah! coolest looking pickguard for a black p bass is chrome, like mine!
OK for those Thin Lizzy covers, I suppose

Just bought a Harley Benton HBP120BK P-Bass clone from Crack Converters for the princely sum of £50!! It has hardly been used, certainly not gigged - the strings sound 'new' and the only 'issues' are a small ding on the upper-waist and some marks on the rosewood(?) fingerboard at the 1st position. Ok, no-one would ever be tricked into thinking that it was a Fender (body radii not large enough - but the body is full thickness coz I took a rule to check and the body dimensions are about right for some aftermarket stuff) but it could be the basis of a PB project bass. It appears to be a maple neck with rosewood fingerboard with Schaller-style mini tuners. Plugged-in when I got home, doesn't sound too bad, classic-ish Precision sound. I have box of PB bits and I'm not afraid to use them. Obviously, I don't want to spend too much of this baby coz it defeats the object of a cheap bass (and I'm a tight-@r$£ ), but with a little TLC this baby should sound good. Mods. Schaller tuners and Strap-loks 3-ply scratch-plate (one-ply at present) DiMarzio P-Bass PU (+ possibly J-Bass PU at the bridge New logo on headstock. Full strip and rebuilt to follow (don't tell the missus). Watch this space Ross

Went and had another look today - you definitely get what u pay for. Hence, decided to walk away. I didn't think that I would be satisfied with a nearly-copy. Instead, I have decided to build my own Precision from parts. I have most spares already including an alder body which I started to build a couple of years ago but got bored. Now I can start again from scratch. Will post soon in 'Builds' with my initial thoughts and options, etc

What ya reckon. Same as pic, but passive £90 Tempted (oh no, GAS again!!) as a second (or is that fourth) bass. Ross
thanks for the info, it sounds like standard width J pickups just don't have the coverage for a wide-spaced 5. I'm thinking whether a squier 5 could be routed for soapbars, or wider J 5 string pickups. Squier did do a previous P5 that had soapbars and 5-inline mini machineheads (IIRC the Protone Precision 5), but I think it had narrower spacing.
I think the problem IS the wide-spacing of the P5. Whilst the Select (and others) PU's are marketed as suitable for 5-stringers, this refers to the 'normal' narrower string-spacing. So it's a personal decision - narrow-spacing/good overall tone or wide-spacing/not so good on G and B strings. Personally, I prefer wide-spacing, and in any case if there are major 'issues' with the G-string (oo-err missus) then its just a matter of playing some notes on the D instead - a bit simplistic I know. If it's any consolation, as an aside, I played the P5 through my recently acquired S/H Peavey TNT 115S at rehearsal on Sunday - the combination is the dogs-wotsits. Ross

Thanks all. I have decided that I shall make a skateboard-style 'dolly' to transport the amp - I have managed to 'acquire' four big, lockable castors.
Why would you put castors on a bass amp?? Surely the cabinet needs to be on the floor so the bass frequencies vibrate through said floor? That's what I think, anyway
Quite right. During rehearsal on Sunday the bottom end was noticeably good - putting wheels in the way would isolate it from the floor and lose some of this. Plus, I had the advantage of being able to ocassionally sit on the amp during the practice (something that may be a bit precarious with castors on-board) - this had the added bonus of foldback through the @r$e Will post some pics later-on (probably new year)
£120 would seem a good price if its the same as this one. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Peavey-TNT-115-S-bas...1QQcmdZViewItem
Yes, it is the same model - but no castors. I bought it for £100 - see my earllier post. Incidently, used it in rehearsal yesterday afternoon - bloody brilliant

UPDATE Combo dismantled. Cleaned all the pots and switches with Servisol - no more crackly Master Vol pot. Bought a pair of side handles from Maplin (£4.99 ea) - now fitted after a bit of drill and jigsaw work. Also replaced dented rear corner plates with spares from my old Peavey Microbass - perfect fit, must be a standard Peavey pressing. Looks and sounds great. I need to sort out the castors - not sure whether to screw directly into the bottom of the cab or make a 'skateboard' to wheel it around from A to B. Any suggestions/advice?? Ross
-
UPDATE Didn't use it Sunday AM - I thought that it would be pushing it to use without a prolonged knob-twiddle session first (amps have that effect on me ) Emailed Peavey customer services in the US yesterday, they emailed a schematic pdf today. Now seriously looking at castors/wheels and inset handles. Any ideas for suppliers, Maplin are crap (no stock in local branches), Adam Hall, any other suggestions?? Ross
