1. Two basschatters on-stage, and one in the audience. Anyone like Godspeed meets Queens of the Stone Age style experimental stuff? http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=t8f5j5MkHZU ps fastest moderation ever
2.
I have a Vintage P bass and I'm really impressed with the standard bass. Easily better than the much vaunted SX range. With these mods, this is a complete steal. Have a free bump.
Thanks mate. Your delay should be with you today, btw.
3. I have a black russian muff at the moment. It's got a 3-knob tone stack, which helps a lot in finding good sounds. Also a switch to pull the second set of diodes out, which makes it much more 'boosty' and less 'muffy'. And a feedback switch for crazy drone noises. Oh, and a gate knob. It's a complex beast.
4. My basses are definitely worth more than my Travelcard. Even if I had a one-year Zone 1&2 travelcard. Which I don't.
5.
Was the other band using an overdriven/distorted/fuzzed bass sound? Or pushing the amp harder than you do, maybe just with an aggressive picked bass tone where you would use fingers? Distortion especially, and more aggressive tone to some extent, puts a lot more high frequencies into the output and this is what will have cooked the horn attenuator, since the cab is not capable of taking the full output of the amp. A 1000W amp into a 500W cab is a bad idea unless you're careful with levels - which it sounds like you have been, maybe not even realising you are! - even if it's not the right impedance to extract the maximum power (eg a 1000W/4-ohm amp will still usually put about 700W into 8 ohms). You will usually get away with it without the extra stress of a harder sound though. If you're lucky it will just be the attenuator pot, and the tweeter will be OK (especially if the horn level was set quite low, so the pot was taking most of the excess power). The crossover caps will be fine, they don't absorb significant amounts of power. If you're very lucky the pot itself will also be fine - they are at least designed to dissipate a fair amount of heat - and the only damage will be the melted knob. Even if the windings of the pot smell a bit cooked it might still be OK, but best to get it looked at.
Cheers for the advice. Weirdly, the other guy uses a much less trebly/attacking tone than I do. Mine is pretty much the most trebly, most-distorted you can get (aluminium-necked bass, bridge single coil, pick, distorting preamp pedal etc). The amp only puts out 350W into 8 ohms, so it shouldn't have been too high for the cab. I might replace the attenuator just in case. I'm assuming the horn is OK because its protection fuse is still alright. It must be that the attenuator was taking all the power. I'll check it out (quietly) tonight! Thanks again.
6. I'd really appreciate some help diagnosing a fault with one of my SWR cabs (the other one is withdrawn from sale until I'm sure it's not a fault with both). On Friday night I did a gig with three other bands - I let one band use my amp, and when they did the room slowly filled with a delicate burning smell. When I got on stage I traced this to the input/crossover panel on my SWR 4x10. The panel was hot (VERY!) to the touch, and the knob on the pot that controls the horn level had melted around the pot spindle. The amp sounded fine, but I obviously switched it off and DIed for my set - no point taking the risk! The amp I was using was a GK 1000RB - into an SWR Goliath II 4x10. The Xover fuse is fine. Any ideas what happened? Was this the pot burning out (it was definitely the pot that stank of burning when I opened it all up the next day). The caps didn't look burned in any way. Was the amp putting out too high a signal (the cab is 500W and has been used loads of times before, so I can't understand if this is the problem)? Any ideas? Do I need a new crossover? A new horn pot?
7. I think some of it is due to the exchange rate - like a lot of other people I've been buying effects from the US when it was $2=£1. Now I'm looking to the UK, so bidding on more here. So prices go up here!
8. In my head, the link was always: Warwick = no taste Metal = no taste Perfect for each other ;-)
9.
Complete with a design and cutaways, the maple neck is joined to a fingerboard. The longer horn has a strap button to achieve a balance. Equipped with both a pickup and electronics, it serves to produce tones.
That's one of the best descriptions of a bass I've ever seen.
10. I just don't get to use clever delays anymore. Does anyone want this fantastic "do everything" delay box? Kills the DL-4 and the DD-20, IMO, to be the current top digital dog. £100 posted to the UK. In great condition, with a couple of barely-noticeable marks. Velcro on the back. With original box and stuff. Here's what it does: http://www.ehx.com/products/stereo-memory-man-with-hazarai

SOLD

Is anyone interested in a pimped Vintage P bass? This is one of the recent ones which have good-quality Wilkinson hardware. It feels and plays well, but it sounded weak, so I took all the electrics out. It now has a Seymour Duncan Quarter-Pounder, 24mm Alpha pots and a Sprague orange drop capacitor. It sounds a zillion times better. Also has black knobs because I thought they looked smart (plus the Alphas are US-spec so the old chromed plastic ones didn't fit). I was thinking £80 plus postage, or come and meet me in London and get it for £80 exactly. Condition is good - a few light marks, but nothing to write home about. This is a great bass, lots of fun. I'm trying to cut my collection right down, though, so it has to go! Loads of pics here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dangerboycrea...57607857452220/
12. Happy Jack - you should work in a museum! Great packing mate. I once received a bass in just a bin bag. It was a piece of s**t anyway so God knows whether it had been damaged in transit. One of the recurring themes here, though, is that a lot of basses are getting delivered in a bin bag and they're fine!
13.
Oooops, sorry about that! I just glanced at your ad and thought I'd read 1001. Nice to see the 800 is working out for you though
The 800RB is not there yet, but hopefully soon. It's in a repair shop having its power transformers changed. 1000RB still for sale! Open to trades + cash your way on lightweight cabs.
14.
Hope I'm not being forward 2U & 22lb http://www.gallien.com/products_artist_hd_1001.html#
Oops. Sorry to seem pedantic, but this is a 1000RB, not a 1001RB. So it's 3U. It weighs about the same, I think. It also doesn't bi-amp, because it's designed for full-range cabs. Here's the correct manual: http://www.gallien.com/manuals/1000RB.pdf
15. Another ickle bump.
16. BUMP. Head's still here.
17. The answer is more bassplayers in each band. Clearly.
18. I have to admit that the thing I hate most about gigging is the people who don't realise we're all in it together - people who won't kitshare, don't talk to other bands, run over so we all end up late and the crowd have to go and get the last tube before the headliners play, don't watch each others' sets etc. I realise that playing originals can attract egomaniacs, but don't get the major label attitude till you get the major label deal. When I promote a night we do everything we can to promote camaraderie, but we've stilll had a few bands who are happy to not bother telling their mates the gig is on, turn up, use other people's gear, not watch any other sets and dick everyone about. Drives me nuts, and makes me want to not pay them.
19.
Anyone got any experience of them? I have just been talking to the guy I buy picks off in Australia (it's cheaper that way) and he makes them. Website
I haven't tried the bass ones, but there's a semi-assembled guitar on my living room floor with some of their P90s in. I'll let you know how it sounds once it's done! I thought they were re-badged Artec pickups, because of the looks and price, but clearly not.
20. Here's a pic of the cab with 4 original drivers. The carpet needs a hoover, and there's tape on the bottom edge. There's one plastic corner missing (rear bottom right). The drivers all look and sound good, and the tweeter responds well. Do you want it, Marti?
21.
Good price for the SWR. Wicked cabs
Thanks! Here's a pic. You can buy either this cab, which has two Eminence Gammas in the top fitted by a previous owner and two oroginal drivers, or one with a full set of 4 original drivers. Same price either way.
22. ===================UPDATED LISTING====================== A quick bump to say that I still have a Goliath II 4x10 for sale. I sold one, and have decided to go the way of 15" cabs, so the other has to go now. The one left for sale has a full set of original drivers in it, but the tweeter doesn't work - it looks like this might be because the fuse housing is loose but I can't guarantee it. Might be an easy fix. Personally I turn it off anyway so it never bothered me. With this is mind, I'll happily take £120 for the cab. It's in North London waiting for you, guys. ==============ORIGINAL LISTING BELOW=========================== I'm assembling a new rig based around an old GK 800RB, so it's time for my trusted 1000RB to go. 500W into 4ohms, 350W into 8 ohms. SERIOUS amp, and everyone who's ever used it at gigs has praised it to high heaven. Comes in a battered SKB 4U rack case. Manual here www.gallien-krueger.com/manuals/1000RB.pdf I've also got one more SWR cab than I need, so have a Goliath 2 4x10 with tweeter to go. 540W and 8ohms (I think). The carpet is torn and taped in places, but again this is a fantastic cab. I was thinking 270 quid for the amp, 170 for the cab. 400 for both. You will have to come to London, N7 to get these. Pics and more details to follow if anyone's interested.
23. Where are you based, mate?
24.
Check out David Sims from The Jesus Lizard, the most underated band of the 90's.
Oh yes. Nasty cheap jazz into GK 800RB = lovely tone.
25. Here's this month's installment of Duel in the Deep, the experimental rock night I run with my mate Seb. This month featuring Jimbo, of this parish, and me in Songs From The Shows.
