  1. I keep most of my effects to a 20/80 wet/dry mix. Any more than that and I find my tone gets a little lost. I imagine it as 'layer' of effect that sits on top of the fundamental tone. I'm definitely an advocate of 'less is more' when it comes to playing live with effects (which is also my view on chorus settings...).
  2. +1 to try before you buy. I had a £700 budget when I was in search of a maple P. I tried a USA hotrod, USA Special, two Mexican standards, a Mexican Special, a Matt Freeman Squire, a Roadworn series, and every maple P I could find over a 3 month period. I didn't like the active sound of the MIM special (or the feel of the Jazz profile neck). The grain and finish on the two Mex standards was poles apart. Then I was lucky enough to find my 'goldilocks' P in the form of a mint 50s Precision, in Cash Converters, for £320! Wunjos in Denmark Street were offering a red one for under £500 last time I was in there, and that one was as good as mine in sound and feel. The neck on the 50s model is a bit 'marmite'. But for me it's got a perfect feel.
  3. My OLP Stingray 5 has an unlacquered maple board. It's dull and dirty. My 50s Precision has a lovely gloss lacquer. It's gorgeous! Is it me, or does the hardness of a coat of lacquer add a bit of 'zing' to the tone?
  4. I use an old Boss FZ-2, with a noise gate, for Time is running out. In a live setting, I find that the closer I get to CW's tone - the more lost in the mix I become.
  5. My favourite cab! I'd have it as a spare if space allowed. I also pair it with an Ampeg head and P bass, but it works with any head. Clear, punchy, and goes lower than an 810! Also the easiest cab to move - in and out of the car by myself, then tilt and roll. Fantastic bit of kit. Have a bump.
  6. Sorry, the point I was trying to make was that if I want brightness and growl I go for rounds. If I want plummy thump I go for flats. I don't see much benefit in choosing a string that claims to fort somewhere in between.
  7. I used to use them, and my tech once made positive comments about them. I wanted the brightness of steels but without the fret-eating side effect. In the end I switched to either steel flats or nickel rounds, as I don't think the pressure wounds justified the extra cost, nor did I feel that they filled a vacant niche in the string market.
  8. I run a similar chain of pedals and haven't noticed any loss of tone or volume. But I do run an Aphex 1402 at the end of the chain, which is fantastic for boosting frequencies that the room I'm playing in may rob me of.

  10. I've done it a few times where I've agreed to both buy and sell outside of ebay. But only when no bids have been placed. The last 3 things I've bidded on have been removed, and obviously sold privately, AFTER bids have been placed. I find this totally unethical.
  11. I have one of these (with the original gold pick guard). 300 quid is less than half price! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Fender-50s-Precision-/160924378626?pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item2577d72602

  13. I've got a set of Fender flats on my Jazz (45, 65, 80, 100) and they're definitely a little lower in tension compared with the D'addario nickle round XLs (45, 65, 85, 105) that were previously on it. I went for slightly thinner A and E string to compensate for the extra pull that I was expecting. But there isn't any. The Fender flats have a few fans on here, and are about 15 quid a set.
  14. Hi mate, you've posted this in the 'amps and cabs for sale' section. Move it to 'basses' in the 'gear' section and you'll get a much better response.
  15. Are you using any pedals? I had this problem once when my chorus pedal had an intermittent power adapter which caused quite a loud and distressing popping when it reconnected itself. Sounds like it could be a dodgy connection somewhere in the chain.
  16. As some have alluded to on here, the tone knob is a superfluous ornament to me. I always have it fully open. But then I play with a loud rock band where I need a bit of the zing and clank to cut through.
  17. To me it looks early 80s (only due to tarnished formerly gold hardware), and a dip and strip job on the body. It could be anything though. Do you reckon he's hoping someone will offer more than the asking price?!
  18. Does anyone know if you can overload or damage a pedal with too high a rating on the mA front? I've got a Morley Bass Wah that requires 300 mA, so powering it off a daisy-chained Boss PSU (200 mA) doesn't give it the power it needs. Would a 9v DC PSU rated at 500 mA be ok? From what I understand, pedals will only draw what they require from the PSU but will suffer from loss of power/tone/volume if they don't get enough. Am I right, or a meringue?
  19. Thanks Paul, that's very generous and thoughtful of you. I already have a 2.1 - 2.5 converter so it should work perfectly. I'll send a PM now.
  20. Last time I was in the Bass Gallery they had a Squier Matt Freeman Precision, which may fit the bill. But if hubby's a Yamaha man - you won't go far wrong with a Yamaha BB424. A really solid reliable bass that's ideally suited to rock pub gigs, and a shade over 300 quid. A little extra money gets the 'X' model with upgraded pickups and through-body stringing. I can only recommend from personal experience - Digital Village have stores across London and have a vast stock. If you see something on their website that you want to have a look at or try out (and it isn't in stock) they will order it in within a few days. The staff are very laid back and helpful, and my local store (Romford) has a sound-proof room full of amps where you can take basses for a test drive in privacy. 21. How are you getting on with the compressor now Mr O'Brien? After commenting on this thread I decided to dig mine out and use it for a gig over the weekend! I fell in love with it again for certain numbers, but I didn't like the 'clank' it added when playing 8th notes with fingers on the driving rock stuff. However, it did make the upper register stuff easier to play as the volume across the fretboard felt/sounded much more even. Our guitarist even said I 'stole the show' on a couple of songs (yes, that's right - a compliment from a guitarist when the attention was taken away from him!). I also found at gave an instantly usable slap tone, with no EQ tweaking necessary. Now to experiment by adding my other pedals (including an ODB-3) to the chain and see how it reacts...
  22. Thanks Rhys! Does anyone know the pin/barrel size for a Trace Pedal?
  23. I've been trying to source a power supply for my old Trace Elliot pedals. Does anyone know of a suitable adapter that can be connected to a power brick with an 18v output?
