1. Not many. Only ever owned basses. Miss the Egmond (Super 8, I think) from my teens, not for its ludicrous neck dive or feeble output, but because I got it when I was 15. And my Shaftesbury R&&&Kfekker copy with grafted-on Gibson pickup. (Classy guy, me).Much better than you might think.
2. In a more benevolent parallel universe, I would have acquired top-end examples of J and P basses, a Rickenbacker and a fretless Wal. As it is, my G&L can do a passable impersonation of some of those, so I can wait. I'm consoling myself with effects. First, an MXR bass fuzz. Then, for Xmas, the Ravish Sitar. This is supposed to be for six strings. But I don't see why they should have all the fun. This will get a post of its own, when I've got my head around the settings a bit more.
3.
I would view that as a positive thing, means they're less likely to spend their time rehashing all the old rock'n'roll cliches that have already been done to death a thousand times over.
They will, you know. Because they won't realise they're cliches ...
4. Go to the pub on the pretext of discussing what we hope to achieve next year. Get completely hammered and forget what we agreed.
5. Bump for tonight. Gorgeous psychedelic sounds. Nice pub. Free admission ...
6. Bumpadybump through a phaser with some spicy synth noises.
7. My band The Wood Demons have a gig at The Jolly Gardeners in Mortlake on Sat Dec 13. Original songs in the psych/prog area (with a couple of early Floyd tunes thrown in). You can check out our new tracks on Soundcloud. I would be chuffed to bits if any of you could make it. John
8. https://soundcloud.c...s/indian-summer Hi BCers, I've been in the studio this weekend with my band The Wood Demons, and this is one of the tracks. If any of you would be kind enough give it a listen, I'd be chuffed to bits. Best, One and five
9. The ME50B is mostly great, but I agree with the earlier poster about the synth sounds. They're practically useless.
10. G&L L-2000 (several basses in one), Squier VM Fretless Jazz, Warwick Rockbass Corvette, Guild B-302. This is either three basses too many or 300 too few.
11. When you're desperate for a career in the music industry, you have to start at the bottom.
12. Cheeky little bump, kind of red with purple flashes.
13. Hi BCers, particularly those in SW /West London. Just a heads-up that my band The Wood Demons are playing next Saturday (Oct 19) at The Jolly Gardeners in Mortlake, SW14. If any of you are interested in a band that's influenced by early Floyd, Caravan, Gong, Gabriel-era Genesis, Can, Neu and stuff in the psych-prog area, you might like us. Anthemic songs, spacy guitars and keyboards, mostly our own material with a couple of early Floyd tunes thrown in. Free on the door, though someone will be passing round a very peculiar hat.
14. I discovered Bitches Brew this year. It's an elusive beast, without a doubt. It's the kind of record which, though utterly absorbing, leaves precious little to remember it by once it's finished. Which means that every time I hear it, it's like listening to it for the first time.
15. Hugh Hopper, Mike Howlett, Richard Sinclair, Bill MacCormick, Jack Bruce, Chris Squire, Chris Hillman, Fred Smith, JJB, Jah Wobble.
16. The Beatles recorded something like 300 songs. They're not all 'A Day In The Life'. Or 'Tomorrow Never Knows'. This is a subjective opinion, but many of them are bland, twee, trivial rubbish. And it seems to me that unfortunately, the sh*te Beatles output has had just as much influence on the last 50 years of pop music as the great.
17. Bank Holiday boost, now the cricket's finished...
18. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=658304440862940&set=a.644017168958334.1073741825.408638325829554&type=1&theater A lot of letters that make a flyer.
19. When there's no footy on, The Gunners doubles as an alternative music venue, and that's where my Wood Demons are playing next Thursday. We're on at 10, and there are two other interesting bands (Laxmi, Fauntleroy) on before us. Anyone fancy coming along?
20.
Why have all the venues dried up over the past few years? We used to have some cracking places that were always packed out. The only thing I can suggest is arranging your own gigs. Find a function room with a bar to hire, promote it yourself and sell the tickets.
I completely agree. I'm not sure about lack of venues either. On the contrary, it seems to me that in a time of austerity landlords have to try a lot harder to get people in through the door, and that includes putting live music on.
21. Brilliant. My psych-prog outfit The Wood Demons played a small local pub in Mortlake. Previously our last (and only) gig was a year ago, and this was our first gig with our new drummer. It wasn't perfect (is it ever?), but there weren't too many glaring cock-ups and the 40-odd people who turned up were very complimentary. We couldn't do the second encore because we'd run out of songs. Really up for more gigs now.
22. Another good reason to come, apart from the music and the cause, is that it's not the Eurovision Song Contest.
23. https://soundcloud.com/the-wood-demons/the-wood-demons-all-heaven Here's a track from our last gig ...
