I've dreamed of getting a set like this for many years, the TV Bassman was the last piece, after searching for a very long time, they are near impossible to find, at any price. They only made this model for 6 months, so not many made at all, possibly no others in the UK. This is serial number 0051. [/quote] The design[i] is[/i] actually very good, excellent quality zips, and detailed stitching, 2 large pockets, for music books, and cables etc, they are not cheaply made at all. Large sturdy protective studs on the end would stop it getting worn when rested on the floor. The only thing is the lining/padding isnt the thickest, but then they weren't designed for containing your £20k bass!! I think a reissue would sell very well, as you say, they wouldn't be cheap though, not when compared to a £20 tweed bass bag.

[/quote] Many do yes, if they're exposed to the elements for long periods, this one is remarkable though, just like the bass. The plastic tends to crack, and the lining go's musty and rot, not this one, although it does smell musty, the bass is not stored in it, i use a hard shell case for protection. It also still has the 'Artistic Products' label sewn inside.

    Having just taken delivery of a '52 TV Bassman, thought i'd post a pic of it with my '52 Precision, nice set, the original complete Bass Rig, all in remarkable condition. Thought I'd share, as I'm a happy bunny today, now i've paired these two together....

    Got my newly acquired '52 TV Bassman back from tech yesterday after a once over, so thought I'd take some pics in the sun with the other '52 Precision bits. Nice set, Bassman sounds ace with the slab!! Happy man.

[/quote] From my knowledge of these, which is quite good, they were certainly not made with any pre-CBS components or tools, and i would doubt the assemblers were from that era also. They also didn't use pre-cbs blueprints, they were all shipped to Japan for the JV reissues in may 1981, the results of which were finished in Japan in April 1982. The templates for the first Fullertons were made using actual pre-CBS instruments, dozens of which were measured, sampled and surveyed, and average dimensions, pickup readings etc, etc were taken. This is a lovely example though, and it has the decal in the right place too, which is actually quite rare in itself. Many '82 Fullerton P's have the decal far too close to the nut, and it looks odd, but this one looks spot on. Shame it doesn't have the case and candy, otherwise i would definitely be interested, but i think the price reflects that, and that doesn't detract in any way from this being a fabulous and highly collectible instrument, especially here in the UK. I wish every luck with the sale, it's a great quality instrument, and I'm surprised its still here, tough time for sellers at the moment, as i found out myself last month!

    There are refin'd '61 & '63 P's on The Bay at the moment, both £3500. Haven't looked to see how original the rest of the parts are? If I were you though (Which I'm not), and you already have an original finish '65, I would keep that over an earlier refin, every day of the week. Why are you thinking of selling when it sounds like you already have what you're looking for? Most '65's are considered pre-CBS by most players/collectors, as they are made with the same parts, by the same people, on the same benches as 'true' pre-CBS. It wasn't until '66 that the 'changes really came into effect, and materials and quality of finishes changed significantly. Check out the prices of '65's compared with '63's, not a great difference, the difference will be more in the condition/originality, than the year in that case. '66 onwards, and yeah, it will start getting significantly cheaper. There's tons of choice out there at the moment, to suit all pockets. New Kings Road have a stunning '64, not cheap, but it is gorgeous!

[/quote] You're right to warn of caution, i'd never considered that, although i always send copy of the courier paperwork/invoice to the seller (Not that anyones asked for it?), i just feel better showing my openness and honesty, it also contains all the collection dates/times so it helps avoid any confusion there, and also (In the event of situations like the one you quoted) provides evidence should PayPal seek it when fraudulant claims come knocking! Awful story though, there's obviously people who make a living from that, not nice at all!! As with lots of things, its the actions of the few that prevent more freedom for the majority!

    Whenever i come across sellers not offering postage, i just ask them if they will put bubble wrap and a box round it, and i'll have a courier pick it up (Arranged by me for collection at a time to suit them.....usually their work address), so far, i've [i]never[/i] had that option refused by a seller. I pay £12 for a courier to collect a bass from anywhere in the UK, and bring it to my door. Well worth considering guys, dont be put off from a potential bargain because buyer wants collection only!!!

    I'm always reading on here , people criticising Fender for making too many models/options, yet people still feel the need to chop up a perfectly good Bass. Don't get me wrong, I'm not being critical, I just find it amusing. When you can buy every possible configuration of guitar you can think of, why do this. I've never seen a bass like this sell, and recover even half the money spent.

The maple cap point is an interesting one, I've always been curious as to why it would make such a difference tonally. Having played hundreds of vintage rosewood and maple fender basses, the main difference in sound comes from the the pickups/amp etc (To me anyway), and the difference in wood makes a much bigger difference to the [i]playability[/i] than the tone. I can make a maple neck '52 P sound almost as warm as a '62 Jazz, with a few knob twiddles, but they feel completely different of course. I must find a maple cap!! the one i played wasnt markedly different, although i didnt spend long enough with it to make a proper assessment. I must borrow yours for a couple of years!! I guess, as you, and many others suggest, its a combination of all the unique traits, that make this bird different to other variations Fender have produced. [/quote] Fair enough, I take that back, I'm only going on books I've read, research done, comments from other owners, and the simple fact that there is nothing different in the components that would realistically make a difference, but you are better placed than me to make that comment, as its based on proper experience, and not my readings alone. Thanks for that. What do you put the difference in tone down too then?, is it just the higher output pickups?? Interested to know more. Cheers

There is nothing in the build up of the bass to suggest it has any tonal differences. John Entwistle said once that it had more growl, and lots of folk have jumped on that band wagon. My '57 has more growl than my '56, basses are all a bit different. Its super rare, that's it. Contoured P's [i]are[/i] more comfortable than slab P's though.
