An SM57 would be adequate, and it's the cheapest suggested here, again that's a dynamic mic. But I'm not sure a mic is the best way to go looking at your other thread about going through the PA.

Issues witn using the PA to amplify double bass?
brensabre79 replied to paddy109's topic in EUB and Double Bass
Depends on the PA Paddy, if its just a basic vocal PA I wouldn't go anywhere near it with your low frequencies, you'll just suck up all the headroom of the system and the speakers will probably not be designed to take the low frequencies. In that scenario I think you'd be better off with a bigger amp and keeping control of your sound. If you're talking about an in house PA with a sound engineer etc. then thats a different story. -
You'll need a large diaphragm mic. I don't have any particular model recommendations but the AKG stuff I have used at both ends of the budget line have all been really good. For live use though you need to get one with a Cardiod polar pattern or you're gonna feedback lots. May I ask why it needs to be a condenser? I have used Sennheiser 421, EV RE20 and AKG D112 for miking bass instruments - all are large diaphragm dynamic mics (not condensers) though. Have you considered a piezo pickup?

Or preserved until one day when it will be free to sing again... At least its not gone to someone who doesn't realise what they have and is going to wreck it playing in some indie band with wholly inappropriate cabs and probably nothing more than a plastic bag to protect it from the rigours of the road. This happened to my old SWR rig, the amp died, I got the cab back but it is scarred and was very upset by the whole ordeal.

I thought this about the vintage chorus, hardly any effect at all until I turned the amp up at a practice and realised I had waaay too much chorus I agree though, to get the jet sound from a flanger you need to have plenty of gain, overdrive or distortion - there are some combo effects near the end so you don't waste a slot...

+1 Barefaced Super12 - with or without the T. It's been discussed on here before that the drivers in these are on paper a higher spec than most of the equivalent other makes (better handling of power, especially at lower frequencies). The handmade in the UK construction, personal service and 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude also make it a winner. Oh, and it is an awesome sounding Cab!

Most hateful song on your covers bands set list?
brensabre79 replied to Dave Tipping's topic in General Discussion
Fortunately I don't have to play this one any more, but I do remember once dreaming I was playing 'Whole of the moon' by the Waterboys and waking up to find that I was! -
You could easily make that fit a regular JB by replacing the two mini-pots with a concentric too. It would probably work OK off 1x9v too, just not so much headroom.
Got to agree there Jon. Yours and my band are poles apart. Its all good for the punters though....
+1 - there's only one song we do on here, its mentioned a few times but I don't mind it to be honest - it's a nice rest . The drummer hates it, he never comes in at the right place! I didn't realise it was the new Mustang Sally, we'll probably have to drop it now. It always raises the roof when we play it, and Lozz has a point, we're there to entertain. You know even Tom Jones hates doing Delilah, but he does it, and he smiles because thats what he is being paid for. As a covers band, we deliberately try to do stuff that nobody else is doing (at least on the circuit we play) because we don't want to turn up and play something that they have heard every week for the last 10 years! We get a lot of re-bookings because we do stuff that people know but don't hear so often... So Sex on Fire will have to go unfortunately, to be replaced with something similarly anthemic! -
Have a look on eBay and google for the Artec onboard preamps. They mostly come from overseas on eBay but you can get a simple Bass and Treble stcked pot or other versions for under £50 easily. They're not bad either, maybe a little hissy if you boost the highs alot.

I only use the front ones when I'm up at the dusty end on the high strings and I can't see the side ones. One of the reasons I went over to maple necks actually was i could never see the side dots on my RW on a stage with moody lighting. I don't really need them low down but must admit they are reassuring if you're having a blank moment... Although my fretless only has side dots and I get around that OK - I think I'd be lost without the side dots above the 12th fret! If I ever got LEDs though it would just be side dots. A luthier I know makes lovely basses out of beautiful timber and then goes and sticks a load of flashing lights on it so it looks like Blackpool Illuminations - i asked him why he would do this and he said that some people love them - to each his own I guess...
What are you using mate??
DHA bass driver and a modified Markbass Compressore. Pure creamy warm filth

+1 LawrenceH. I think this is best done with a flat blank before the radius shaping begins, then the binding gets shaped with the rest of the board.
There was a time when we were all buying plans for Bills Omni cabs (myself included) but after hearing one, they seem a little too hifi for me. I'm looking for a Boz Burrell / Andy Fraser old school tone. Will the Super Twelve deliver?
I think it really depends on your amp/setup. The Super12T can be used as a damned good PA speaker if you want to because all the frequencies are there, it's a tremendously flat response in terms of frequencies, so you will find that if you want some dirty resonances in there you can get it with EQ. but if you run a flat amp into it, you'll get a pretty flat response. What you say about sounding 'too HiFi' I imagine to mean has a bit of a mid scoop (as a lot of hifi stuff does). One thing I noticed about my S12 when I got it was that the mids were all there, it took me a bit to get used to it actually. The Genz amp I use has a rather clean, crisp sound from all accounts so I use a couple of dirty valve pedals (preamp and compressor) in front of it to shape my tone (imagine JJ Burnell meets Jack Bruce - although I can't play like hose guys!). You should definitely speak to Alex if you're considering a cab, whatever your purposes, but have a think about the head you'll be using with it if you're after a particular sound because from what I've experienced the barefaced will pretty much chuck out whatever you chuck in.
I've got a full system (2 single pots and 2 stacked)...it may not have mid for all I know. It's too damn complicated for my liking
Doesn't sound any more complicated than the East system to me (3 stacked pots). They are both very different beasts IMHO with their own little quirks and it really depends what you want form an onboard Preamp. I thought I knew the answer to that but having tried a few different ones out now I'm personally tempted to go passive with my next project.
I'm sure the Super 12 is a great cab but I was on the forum when Basschat was Bassworld and I remember all the hype about the Hartke HA3500. It wasn't long before half the members on the forum had one. I took a punt on an Ibanez Promethean based on the reviews on this forum. It's a decent little combo but not quite what I was expecting having read the reviews. A review is, by nature, a subjective thing. I wouldn't advise anyone buy something they've not tried out. ..... oh, nearly forgot, anyone local to me got one I could try?
Sometimes its not possible to try something out before you buy it, although you should always try to. I bought a HA3500 based on the ratio of good reviews to bad ones. It has served me well and hey, it's not a bad amp at all. I tend to read the bad reviews more so I know what to look out for and if its going to be an issue for me (to each their own). Like you bassman, I considered a Promethean at one stage but having read a number of reviews saying it was not all it promised to be (and how would it defy the laws of physics in this way anyway?), I asked the question on here, a number of people commented and based on this I reconsidered. A huge number of positive reviews for the Barefaced stuff reassured me before firstly getting in touch and eventually placing an order, I could only find one negative one, and even that said "it's just not for me" rather than anything actually wrong with the design/operation. The key thing about the Barefaced stuff is that, whilst its not available in all the shops you can return it in 30 days if you don't like it, no questions asked*. Not many manufacturers do this sort of thing, not many shops do either. Also, as it stands, you get to speak directly with the person who has designed the entire product range before you hit the button, meaning theres less chance of you being disappointed. When I spoke to Alex at Barefaced I enquired about a completely different cab to the one I ended up with, after a chat about what I wanted from it he pointed me in the right directon, with a couple of options. I doubt you'd get the chance to speak with 'Mr Ibanez' about what the amp could deliver before purchasing a Promethean. If you did, you might decide to go for somehing different too.

I've got one in my Jazz, it replaced an Artec one and it works fine, nothing fancy it just does the job well. The switchable HF is quite good I did a bit of experimenting with this, there are 4 modes - 2 different frequency boosts and 2 different EQ curve shapes. I have a J Retro in my fretless and I was considering getting a BTC for that too since my J retro has developed a fault after less than a year. If your budget is tight I'd look at the Artec one too as to be honest there doesn't seem to be much difference in performance - you can't select the HF on the Artec and its not quite so refined but in terms of use they are pretty much the same thing. Neither will offer you the range of adjustment that you can get from the East ones, though having used one I've discovered that I tend to only dial in one setting anyway so I can probably get the sound I want with the amp and just have the onboard for fine tuning.

I think Eminence have some info on their website in terms of cabinet volume and port sizes. Download the PDF. From there you can work out all the dimensions to suit. The cabinet design is very much bespoke to the driver you're using and what you want to get out of it. So a generic 15" cab may exist but it won't necessarily be the best thing for that speaker and may produce unexpected results in terms of frequency response and dB... Do you realise the can of worms you could be opening with this thread? I'm going to run for cover now.

What do you do with basses you don't play?
brensabre79 replied to woodyratm's topic in General Discussion
Its worth noting though that if you're selling a prized instrument to fund GAS it's always better to get the one you're GASing after first to make sure you don't hate it and regret selling something you love to fund it! Not always financially viable but I've done this and its a horrible feeling! -

My Sabre is gathering dust at the moment. My dad gave it to me (he bought it new in 1979) so I'd never sell it and its gorgeous to play, but these days i prefer the skinny Jazz necks. I did take the Sabre out a month or so ago, did a practice with it as I was waiting on a fret dress for the Jazz. I thought to myself "why oh why did I stop playing this bass?" and took it out on my next gig. Then i remembered, halfway through the set when i couldn't really hear myself so much as feel the air moving beneath my waist. Great studio bass but needs some serious mid boost from the amp in a gig - the Jazz I just leave flat. So now I just leave the Sabre at home for recording -
T-Rex Bass juice does sublime to ridiculous for me - depends what you've got going in to it though.

Cheers Doc, thats reassuring. looking again I think it might be 70s. I tried laying the pic over my pic but couldn't even get the outline of the body to line up so must be an angle thing. But the distance between the neck PU and the bottom of the scratchplate looks the same as the distance between the BPU and the scratchplate which is correct for 70s.
