The truss rod adjuster is at the body end of the neck. There is a cutaway in the scratchplate so it's accessible and Fender very kindly supply an adjuster tool as standard. It's a kind of long ball ended Allen key with a T handle so tweaking the trussrod is a doddle. I owned a '62 Re-issue Jazz and very quickly got fed up with having to take the neck off to adjust it. f*** that. I'm only getting rid of it because I just prefer the Precision sound and since I got a Precision I don't pick up the J anymore. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 5 string for a while and I like the Stingray sound so it seems like a good idea at the moment Give it some thought. The main problem I see is that you're in Manc and I'm down here so it would be logistically difficult. Don't worry if you're not keen, I'll probably put it up for trade in a new thread. I'll put some more pics up later.
good info andy... i did wonder about being so far apart logistically..i guess swops work best when both parties are in personal proximity..50 miles etc put it up on the forum and i can think about it as well my better half is still emphasising i should really sell ...then buy a downmarket bass since we dont play much now...she is sooooo logical but GAS is something i will die with best of luck andy i will be watching and hopefully we both will get a clear sale cheers geof
Leo Fender does seem to have instigated another legend with the Musicman company. I think the years caught up with him in his G&L phase. He seems to have run out of things to pioneer and, good as G&L basses are, he was only able to "reinvent the wheel".
i agree...when he finally brought those two jazz pups together in one housing with single large poles i think he hit the jackpot cheers
You've got flatwounds on your shortscale bass, and roundwounds on your jazz. Strings are very much a matter of trial and error, and personal taste. For the jazz, if it was me, I'd be using Ernie Ball Super Slinkys (the pink packet), and for the shortscale bass, if you like flats (smooth strings) then Thomastik Infield flats are superb. Rounds are punchier, with more attack, and flats are warmer and more mellow sounding, generally.
well said i bet a lot of chaps on here could say having tried a number of string marques and types there are some they wouldnt use again eventually i think you get an affinity with a string maker and model and tend to feel secure and happy with that for me its TI
Yup - thats the one Its got a nice features in that it mutes the lineout when you switch on the built in tuner. (handy when realising your out of tune and have already stepped up to the stage hehe) I dont think I paid that much for mine - and I bought it from SoundsLive about 9 months ago. Thats the credit crunch for you! Any more info needed? Edd BTW its big, about 5 - 6 " deep at its deepest and at least 4 foot, maybe 4' 2" long.
thats plenty info and many thanks from sunny manchester cheers geof
Leo Fender's main aims were simplicity, ease of maintenance, and, of course, to make the number 1 selling guitars and basses. No matter how his company has been run since they can't seem to undo that legacy. That makes Leo Fender a pretty amazing bloke!
does that include musicmen and G+L
I've not had this too long, I bought it from a fellow basschatter. It's in excellent condition, comes with a gigbag, and the previous owner had the pickup upgraded to a Seymour Duncan, the original Fender pickup is included. I'm primarily a 6 string player, but I bought this to go with my jazz bass for gigs where a 6 string singlecut isn't appropriate. I've found that I really prefer the jazz bass, and I'm missing all of those lovely low notes from the B string, so I'm going to get either a 5 string jazz bass or a 5 string Stingray. It's currently wearing a new set of LaBella medium flats, for that classic Precision bass sound. I'm asking £450 for it plus shipping, or personal collection is welcome. Trades welcome for a Musicman Stingray 5 string bass, Stingray 4 string bass in Sunburst or Epifani 3x10 cab.
firstly can you tell me if the upgraded pup is a humbucker in design...it would have a phantom coil and is the truss rod adjustable at the headstock end finally http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39305 ??
As part of my clear out, I'm going to pass on my lovely StingRay as I need the cash to thin out the collection. I've loved having this bass but I've managed to get away with just my Darryl Jones so here this one goes. It was previously owned by 'Ghost Rider' and before that, another fellow on this forum. Anyway, this is a rather good example of a 2005 Ernie Ball StingRay 2EQ. I've played it with TI Flats and you get a lovely warm thump but the StingRay growl is still there. The body is in pretty mint condition, with nothing major I could see. Comes with standard Music Man hardcase and strung with Ernie Ball Slinkies. I purchased this just before Christmas for £650 so would quite like to get a similar amount back, but open to offers Any questions, just let me know.
are you interested in a MM5...see my white one here http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=39305
I was in Edinburgh at the weekend and I saw a Squier Classic Vibe 50s P in the flesh for the first time. Looks nice. Then I looked at the price tag... £549 (was £700-odds). Must be a mistake, no? They're like about £250 online are they not? I left the shop somewhat bemused.
tell them to awa an bile yer heid that is a mistake i am sure
Not sure yet. Was thinking of going with the 20th Anniversary look i.e. no chrome plate, but then again I think the chrome plate looks lush so who knows.
i would say no chrome plate imho that is what really spoils the MM 4 class look along with the splt its so 'blacksmithy' looking the fender jazz idea blends better

ultimate bass needs ultimate downstream hardware to bring out the best of the sound..which is what we are selling to the public and if you are chasing the CD sound ultimate recording studio equipment
I guess my point was that it's such an individual approach to what sort of bass you would like. I would generally think that Fenders provide likable playability to suit most people, but I understand that might not be the case for everyone. I meant that I was 'a serious bass player' in the least arrogant way possible (I'm sure my drummer might argue that I'm one of the least serious bass players going ) but you get my point. I'm just happy with Fender is all, I like them a lot. I just think that people build their ideas on Fender under false pretense sometimes (not that I'm saying you have). Fender's nail i for me... but I still probably wouldn't say no to an MTD or an F-Bass right now though...
well i am considering selling my MM5 and would gladly get another fender...mainly because in real terms apart from sonic qualities its the easiest bass to fix or upgrade...which is a plus really like the co-op tea...fender has branches everywhere... and i am looking closely at a 54P as a swoppable alternative for simplicity and style cheers geof
Ah, I lived in Edinburgh for seven years at the end of the nineties/millenium. I do miss it - walking to work in the centre took 10mins from Bruntsfield. An easy place to live. Are Mev Taylor's still around? That was a good shop. EDIT: Yep, here they are. They seem to have moved further into traditional instruments since I was up there, but they still do repairs/setups. http://www.mevtaylors.co.uk/repairs.htm
i thought of mev taylor as well...the thing is if they cant do it then they probably use someone who can good shop but iirc more classical instruments and wind
